A very historic event took place yesterday with the Cassini space probe entering orbit around Saturn. The picture above is but one of many images that have been sent back and shows amazing details of the rings.

The science and engineering it took to do this is amazing the Mars Rovers continue to send back data and are making new discoveries but this latest data from Saturn is over the top. [Cassi ni Home Page]

Mars ho! In about 24 hours, the Beagle 2 lander will descend to the surface of Mars, courtesy of the European Space Agency. After a few mighty bounces, encased in a giant rubber ball, the lander will open up and allow its instrument payload to start sampling the surface. This is the first in a trifecta of landers destined for Mars during the next month. NASA's landers, Spirit and Opportunity, land on January 3rd and January 24th.

Mars mobl0g: amazing photos beamed home

Mars mobl0g: amazing photos beamed home
from NASA Spirit

Now *that* is a photoblog. Chronologically indexed gallery of interplanetary snapshots from this weekend's Mars landing. The first images sent back are of limited quality -- and only in black and white -- because data transmission rate from Spirit's antenna back to Earth is limited. Higher-res color images are expected to be relayed back from the orbiting Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey Spacecraft later today, according to Mission Control. At left:

"This mosaic image taken by the navigation camera on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit has been further processed, resulting in a significantly improved 360 degree panoramic view of the rover on the surface of Mars."

Link to NASA's Mars moblog, li nk to full-size, 360-degree composite panorama image. Link to SF Chron story with details on the image transmission process. (Thanks, Warren)

Meanwhile, back on Mars

Meanwhile, back on Mars 09/07/2004 09:48 PM

I must admit I was shocked to find out today the the Mars rovers are still quietly going about their business on the red planet. They're still plugging along climbing through craters and scratching rocks. The Spirit rover has travelled over two miles since it landed. The folks at JPL are starting to sound like proud parents in their weekly status reports.

Sol 225 was truly a mega-activity sol. Spirit awoke at 11:20 a.m., Gusev local solar time and stayed awake well past the afternoon communication session with NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter without taking a nap. Spirit hasn't done that in a long time.
I have a strange feeling that if the Martian winter causes the rovers to hibernate that they'll wake up ready to go again next spring. Nice work NASA. Truly something to be proud of.

MSDN: A Look Back and a Look Ahead

MSDN: A Look Back and a Look Ahead 11/14/2003 11:31 AM
One day you're sitting there, making plans for the summer. Maybe a weekend at the beach house, lazy afternoons by the pool, languid days spent picking wildflowers in the bountiful meadow surrounding our new offices in midtown Manhattan. And then the next day, you turn around and find out that there was no summer. It never got above 56 degrees, it rained every day, the pool was broken, whenever you flushed the beach house toilets the sink overflowed with sea water, and the wildflowers (which were admittedly quite nice because of all the rain) were off limits due to an infestation of West Nile virus-carrying mosquitos, which were there because it rained every day. Then we had to board up the meadow because of the hurricane that never made it this far north. And before we could even unpack our sweaters, we looked up and realized that we're putting the last issue of the year to bed.

Bush's well-leaked call for a serious expansion of human space exploration deserves support. He sounded just the right notes, including this so-true line: "We do not know where this journey will end. Yet we know this: Human beings are headed into the cosmos."
