nnt.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/home/index_e.htmlA joint venture
between the National Research Council and the University of Alberta,
and funded in part by the Government of Canada, Alberta, and the
university, "The National Institute for Nanotechnology is an
integrated, multi-disciplinary institution involving researchers in
physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, informatics, pharmacy and
medicine." At the site, visitors can find all sorts of interesting
information about the nano world. Of particular interest is the Our
Research link, which leads to all sorts of information about the
various research projects at the institute, such as: Supramolecular
Nanoscale Assembly, Materials and Interfacial Chemistry, Molecular
Scale Devices, and more. Visitors to the site can view publications
and learn about the researchers involved in the many projects as well
as learn about the institute's facilities and visit the Newsroom link
for several press releases.[From The NSDL Scout Report for the

Nanotechnology Precaution Is Urged
07/29/2004 11:58 PMThe invisibly small particles and fibers that scientists are producing
in the hot new field of nanotechnology pose health and environmental
risks great enough to justify banning, for now, certain cosmetics now
found on the U.S. market and also halting the deliberate release of
nanomaterials into the environment, according to an independent report
commissioned by the British government.
Most products of nanotechnology, including atom-scale electronic
components and super-strong materials, will probably prove harmless,
the report concludes, offering a modicum of reassurance for the
nascent research field that has been buffeted by science-fiction
scenarios of techno-doom. But the joint report by Britain's Royal
Society and Royal Academy of Engineering also strongly warns that the
manufactured specks at the heart of nanotechnology -- tens of
thousands of which can fit on the tip of a needle -- behave in
unpredictable ways and in some cases appear surprisingly toxic.

07/15/2004 05:17 PM
Our friends at the Foresight Institute are sponsoring the first-ever
conference to focus solely on bottom-up nanotechnology, as
envisioned by
Richard Feynman in 1959.
"This new meeting series will examine all aspects of
advanced nanotechnology, also termed molecular manufacturing or MNT:
research status, prospects for disruptive applications, and policy
issues — including maximizing access for those who would not
otherwise benefit."
On the third day of the event, bloggers Howard
"NanoBot" Lovy and Glenn "
Instapundit" Reynolds are
co-chairing a panel on Advanced Nanotechnology Policy.

While fur is typically associated with
staying warm, the stylish new material covering Apple's planned Power
Mac GX will improve on the cooling technology used in the current
generation of the Power Mac G5. The Power Mac GX machines are rumored
to be whisper quiet, and, while it's unclear if there is simply no
need for a fan or if the fur has sound-dampening properties beyond its
cooling properties, the quiet operation is expected to be
well-received by sound- and video-processing users. Evidently, Apple's
high level of R&D investment paid off with a bit of bio-inspired
nanotechnology (patent-pending, of course). The fur coating - which
Apple will undoubtedly label with a clever marketing name (Apple
engineers are rumored to call it "iFuzz" internally) -
actually pumps heat away from the processor and case interior with
hundreds of microfluidic tubules into each individual
"hair." The fluid cooling is similar to that used in the
current dual 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5 models, albeit orders of magnitude
more sophisticated.
