Science Times: 25th Anniversary The first issue of Science Times[weekly section of N.Y. Times] appeared 25 years ago, on Nov. 14, 1978. To celebrate the anniversary, we pose 25 of the most provocative questions facing science. As always, answers are provisional. [free reg req'd]

Space Invaders Rug

Space Invaders Rug 06/07/2004 11:37 PM
Nerdolicious area rug from NYC-based design boutique Dune. According to Funfur de blog, the boutique's owner contacted Space Invaders maker Taito for permission to make the rug -- and Dune was reportedly given permission to do so without any requirements of licensing fees or royalty payments. Unlike the game on which it is based, this design product will cost you more than just a fistful of quarters -- $3,000, to be exact.

Space Invaders Making A Comeback... In

Space Invaders Making A Comeback... In
The Original Form

There are plenty of old video games that have been getting an "update" lately. These are games that have the same title as a game from decades ago, but are otherwise almost entirely different. This isn't a surprise, considering the vast difference in gaming technology. However, sometimes, people just want the original classic. Taito is planning to start selling the arcade machines of "Space Invaders" again - twenty five years after it was originally introduced. It's not an update, but the same game that was such a big hit years ago (and one of the first video games I ever played). The only difference has to do with inflation. It'll now cost $0.50 per play instead of the old standard of $0.25.

Gambling Machines Much Safer Than
Electronic Voting Machines

Gambling Machines Much Safer Than
Electronic Voting Machines
06/14/2004 03:33 AM
It appears that making sure gambling is fair is much more important than making sure our elections are fair. One of the defenses pulled out by those who want to keep going with existing electronic voting machines is that no one seems to complain about electronic gambling machines. Perhaps that's because electronic gambling machines are held to a much higher standard than electronic voting machines. This NY Times editorial lists six different ways in which gambling machines in Nevada are under much more scrutiny than electronic voting machines. These include things like the fact that the state requires copies of the source code of all electronic gambling software, as well as their stringent licensing procedure for any company that wishes to sell electronic gambling machines. Employees of any such company have to go through background checks to make sure they have no criminal record. Considering that Diebold had convict ed felons involved with their electronic voting systems - you wonder if a similar licensing procedure might make sense for voting machines as well.

JVC Gets Around to Releasing Wireless
USB Audio Receivers
04/18/2005 03:08 PM

RX-D702B_g.jpgIt’s strange that JVC is hiding its Wireless USB goodness under a bushel, but three recently released devices—the sake-soaked EX-D5 and two receivers, the RX-D702 [pictured] and the RX-D302—haven’t gotten much attention. Most of these were released at CES but didn’t see American shores until this month.

In JVC’s world, Wireless USB lets the kids, who certainly enjoy them some MP3s, stream their music at around 480Mbps. A standalone client sits on the PC and sends music out to multiple receivers.

Adobe Reported to be Releasing Photoshop
Upgrade
03/28/2005 04:05 PM

According to Betanews, Adobe is planning to announce a major upgrade to Photoshop CS called Photoshop CS2. The announcement by Adobe was suppose to be made on Monday of next week. A press release was posted early and then taken down. According to Betanews, the new upgrade will be available in May.

The new release promises better tools to fix common image problems such as red eye and blemishes, as well as updated support for raw, or uncompressed, images. The software is expected to start shipping in May. Adobe says it added numerous features to Photoshop CS2 in response to requests from users and the changing needs of the digital imaging industry. A new spot healing brush will fix blemishes, red-eye and distortion from camera lenses. Users will also be able to scale images with less quality loss than previous Photoshop versions. A tool known as Vanishing Point will allow the user to recolor and transform objects in an image without altering its perspective. Image Warp, another new tool, enables a user to easily twist, warp or skew an image cleanly using preset functions, or with custom points. A new version of Camera Raw, Adobe's plug-in for manipulating uncompressed images from digital cameras, supports modifying multiple raw files simultaneously. Adobe has also added batch processing that can be done without launching the Photoshop executable.

Industry analysts releasing licensed
whitepapers

Industry analysts releasing licensed
whitepapers
08/19/2004 03:21 PM

Redmonk is an analyst firm that studies the Technology industry. One aspect of their work is publishing whitepapers on various technology subjects, which are usually sold for hundreds of dollars to companies seeking research. Tech magazine Info wWorld noticed their most recent publication was released for free, and on top of that, licensed under Creative Commons. Stephen O'Grady of Redmonk explains the reasoning behind the licensing in this post to his technology weblog. In a followup post, he sums up the paralells between Creative Commons licensed technology papers and open sourced code:

"I see no reason to believe that the open source model is any less applicable to our business model than it is to software. It's not one-to-one, of course, because of the inherent differences between source code and analysis, but at the end of the day they are both just information. Information that can be used and built on. If you allow it."

It's great to see an analyst firm try out licensing their whitepapers, and I hope it's the start of a new trend in the industry.
