Controversial CEO Howard Lutnick went from tragic figure to villain in a matter of days when he abruptly terminated the pay of deceased employees, but Cantor has since paid $145 million to families in tribute to former colleagues. Joining many others throughout the country in a movement called One Day's Pay, the firm will donate 100% of Monday's revenues to the family relief fund. -more-

I meant to mention this earlier. Mark Hemphill's running a weblog over at TypePad. Go check it out. I've only known Mark for a few months (we met back at Zap; he was the guy directing the filming and interviewing that was going on) but I'm convinced we're long lost brothers. We have very similar backgrounds, career paths and interests and are quickly becoming very close friends. Mark, like me, has recently returned to PEI after years away: Toronto, San Francisco. And, like me, has brought back with him a beautiful Ontario bride. :-) Mark is another great thread in...

Mark your calendars... 12/25/2004 05:30 PM

April 13, 2029 is the date that asteroid 2004 MN4 — a quarter-mile wide chunk of rock — may hit the earth. (Of course, it's already got a Wikipedia entry!) If you're wondering if that is a Friday, I checked already; it is.

The risk rating for asteroid 2004 MN4 was raised Friday by NASA and a separate group of researchers in Italy. The asteroid's chance for hitting Earth on April 13, 2029 has now been categorized as a 4 on the Torino Scale. The level 4 rating -- never before issued -- is reserved for "events meriting concern" versus the vast majority of potentially threatening asteroids that merely merit "careful monitoring."

The Christmas Eve announcement was unusual in that the the Torino Scale rating went up, from 2 to 4. Most asteroids tend to drop on the scale following further examination.

I wonder if Bruce Willis has been put on alert yet.
