Belkin to Offer Airgo Wireless Products

Belkin to Offer Airgo Wireless Products 08/09/2004 09:46 AM

airgo_lgoo.jpg imageBelkin has signed on with wireless vendor Airgo to release new products based on the MIMO wireless technology, a longer-range "multiple in, multiple out" radio system that is compatible with existing Wi-Fi standards (b and g in this case) but can reach speeds of up to 108-megabits per second (compared to 802.11g's 54-mbit rates).

The Belkin products, a MIMO router and a client card, will be the first to officially adopt the MIMO technology, which is in the running to become the next official Wi-Fi standard (Intel is sponsoring its main competitor).

Some companies did the same thing with 802.11g, jumping on board before the standard was officially announced. Remember the other standards? No, me neither.

Belkin Goes MIMO

Belkin Goes MIMO 08/09/2004 12:49 AM
Belkin will use Airgo's MIMO technology for consumer products, News.com reports: The multiple-in, multiple-out technology that Airgo is bringing to market has other manufacturers signed on, but Belkin is the first well-known, mass-market brand name planning--reportedly--to sell Airgo-based equipment. The gateway will be $179 and the client card $129; they will be available in mid-October. Airgo's equipment supports 802.11g, and its own faster, further proprietary technology. Airgo claims a fourfold increase in throughput and range: they told me months ago that their 108 Mbps proprietary flavor has a throughput that's much, much higher than competing proprietary extensions. The proof is in the performance. Airgo justifies the higher price their added value brings at this stage in Wi-Fi's development by the greater coverage area. However, you need new client cards to take full advantage, which offsets some of the cost savings of more coverage area....

Belkin TuneStage

Belkin TuneStage 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

What if you put a snake in a bong? You would get so high. You might even think that designing a Bluetooth audio bridge for the iPod, like the upcoming (and mysteriously not-pictured) Belkin TuneStage, is a good idea. And maybe you'd be right—it'd be like an AirPort Express with iTunes, except all your songs would be on the iPod, and you wouldn't have to go back to your computer every time you wanted to change a song (assuming you don't use a remote or something). iPodlounge has gotten word that Belkin has done this very thing and will be unveiling it soonish (before CES, at least). They might even throw an optical TOSlink out on the receiver to compliment the RCA and minijack connections it already has. I say live it up, hippies.

Pure VoIP Won't Be Regulated, Phone-Like
VoIP Might Be

Pure VoIP Won't Be Regulated, Phone-Like
VoIP Might Be
02/12/2004 02:16 PM
As expected, the FCC ruled on the Pulver VoIP petition today, and gave something of a split decision. They claim that "pure" VoIP systems shouldn't be regulated, since they're just like email or any other internet application. However, they're reserving judgment on VoIP systems that more resemble regular phone service, such as Vonage that touch on the PSTN. This seems like something of a cop out, and may be difficult to sustain over time. Most of the "pure" VoIP systems are offering (or planning to offer) gateways that let them connect to the telephone system. Where do they fall along the regulatory spectrum? This would take away the incentive of VoIP providers to connect to regular phone service, creating two different levels of phone service, rather than connecting the two and leading to a more orderly migration. Of course, it still remains to be seen what sorts of regulations they will include for PSTN-connected VoIP. Chances are, they're talking about adding in 911 service and phone-tapping abilities.

Airgo Goes Faster With Belkin.

Airgo Goes Faster With Belkin. 08/12/2004 12:38 AM
Unstrung: Airgo Goes Faster With Belkin. IMO calling this stuff "pre-802.11n" borders on fraud since the IEEE hasn't even started writing the 802.11n spec yet. I also notice that the marketing war between "true MIMO" and (presumably) "poseur MIMO" has begun.

Belkin Markets Via Web Interception 11/11/2003 01:10 AM
A clever fellow discovered that his Belkin router was marketing a Belkin service to him through Web redirection: If you're using any Belkin gateway that offers its fee-based Parental Control Web Content Filter, it apparently intercepts a Web request every eight hours to show you an ad for that service. Review: Belkin Bluetooth mouse

Review: Belkin Bluetooth mouse 09/23/2004 09:57 PM
I've been looking for the ideal Bluetooth mouse almost as long as I've had my PowerBook G4. Unfortunately this isn't it. I chose the Belkin bluetooth mouse for its price and number of buttons, and because Microsoft's Bluetooth IntelliMouse isn't compatible with Macs.

The Belkin mouse is fairly large, but is very comfortable to use if you're right-handed. If you have a computer with Bluetooth built in, you won't need to use any adapter with it, which makes it more convenient than regular cordless mice.

Belkin router "upgrade" tries to sell
you censorship
11/07/2003 11:05 AM
Belkin's new router firmware "upgrade" automatically redirects http sessions to a Belkin sell-page for some bullshit censorware filtering crap. That's some upgrade: from a router that routes packets to a router that pushes the antithesis of free expression.
In response criticism, a Belkin product manager came forward this week to confirm the behaviour was designed into the products as a way to make it easier for consumers to sign up to a free trial of its parental control software. Belkin's Eric Deming is keen to allay concerns about the technique which have produced sharp criticism of the company on the news.admin.net-abuse.email newsgroup.
