Taiwan's amazing, obscure innovative

06/05/2005 11:42 PM
Cory Doctorow: Wired News is carrying an amazing piece on Taiwan's Computex conference, where small entrepreneurial firms exhibit innovative hardware designs they've cooked up in their labs. This is the stuff of those delightful shelves in the back of Fry's and in the technology markets in Chinatowns, with brand-names you don't recognize, that does stuff you've never imagined. The accompanying photogallery makes this look like the kind of show I'd love to go to -- like the awesome Chinese section at CES (the only part of the CES floor I enjoyed the year I went). Link

Update: Simon Burns, who wrote the article in question, sez, "Actually, one of the weirdest, but most interesting, gadgets I saw was barely mentioned in that article. That was an astonishingly tiny video player. How tiny? Hold up two fingers - it's smaller.

They told me the manufacturing cost was below $55. Makes me wonder how long before greetings cards play video. Three years?

There's a little more information in an article I wrote, and Dans Data reviewed a similar product from another company recently.

Tech Jargon Confusing People Into Buying

Tech Jargon Confusing People Into Buying 04/14/2004 02:26 PM
Recently we wrote about a study saying that too much tech jargon was scaring off buyers and suggested that companies focuse more on benefits than jargon to attract customers. Well, as some pointed out at the time, tech jargon can be a two way street - often confusing the matter enough that clueless customers feel compelled to buy. In fact, a new study shows that more than one in four people surveyed admitted to buying the wrong product due to confusing jargon - and you have to wonder how many others in that situation wouldn't even admit to it (or, even better, still haven't realized they bought the wrong product). The question, then, is whether or not salespeople are purposely confusing the issue to try to trick people into buying, or if they just don't realizing how confusing the jargon is. I'm guessing it's a combination of both - with some cases being a situation where the sales person is covering up their own ignorance by throwing in jargon words to sound knowledgeable. What it all boils down to, however, is that (a) tech jargon isn't going away and (b) buyers need to be skeptical of what they're being told and should do their best to learn the basics of what they're being sold from third parties before buying.

We had heard Diamond Comics had started to ship these out last week, looks like they are starting to hit the floor. Happy hunting!

Amazon Sex Toys?

Amazon Sex Toys? 04/09/2004 04:00 PM
I have a sick mind. And I'm a visual person. I was checking out something on Amazon and that stupid gold box in the upper right corner shook and caught my attention. For some reason I decided that I ought to see what was in it this time, not that I've ever found anything remotely interesting there before. But, you know, there's always a first time... The first item that came up... Well, let's just say it surprised me. I...

Boys and Their Toys

Boys and Their Toys 10/28/2003 11:09 PM
What? You thought I was selling my older hardware for the fun of it? Things I love about Kwyjibo, my new Sony Clie UX50: size, shape, weight, screen, features, functionality, convenience, power cradle. Things I don't love about Kwyjibo: (1) it relies on the Sony Memory Suck; (2) No keyboard navigation; (3) unmanageable USB port cover; (4) no way to flip between portrait / landscape mode; (5) deep reliance on ass-nasty QuickTime codecs; and (6) poor out-of-the-box Outlook integration. Even with these grievances aired, I must admit that I've been quite pleased with "it" so far. Then again, who's ever completely happy with their PDA?...

New Toys For 2004 12/23/2003 05:41 PM
Rebelscum reader 'Celticsfan' informs us that Star Wars Insider magazine has details of new upcoming toys for 2004. A new Battle of Endor-themed wave is planned including Han Solo in AT-ST Driver gear (shown in the magazine,) General Crix Madine, and General Lando Calrissian. Toys R Us exclusive toys include Red Leader's X-Wing Fighter (also shown) and several new multipacks like the "Skirmish at Carkoon" set we previously reported on. Fans of the Screen Scene Jedi Council sets will be pleased to know that more are on the way, incuding a center floor section. Looks for the first new set to include Ki-Adi-Mundi, Yoda, and Qui-Gon Jinn.

Toys That Connect With TVs

Toys That Connect With TVs 02/18/2004 07:58 PM
It seems like an odd time for "new toy" stories to be coming out. They usually appear as we swing into the holiday season, not two months later. Anyway, it seems that despite years and years of failed attempts at making toys that interact with TV (Microsoft's Barney doll...), companies are at it again, but this time, they think kids will really want toys that interact with the TV. Of course, this faces the same problem that has come up every time people think up this idea. Most people watch TV. They consume it. They don't interact with it, and adding a toy in the middle doesn't necessarily improve things. Of course, there is an element of getting kids to read/sing/clap along with a TV, but it's not clear if the toy really enhances that process. Meanwhile, it seems like many kids are less interested in TV and more interested in the internet. Of course, it won't be long before we have toys that interact with the internet as well (I'm sure some are already out there).
