Regional Google Filtering

Regional Google Filtering

Regional Google Filtering 10/25/2002 07:23 AM

Jonathan Zittrain and Benjamin Edelman have released their latest report, systematic documentation of how Google.de and Google.fr filter controvertial sites. Google gives no notice that results are being filtered (as they do with the DMCA) and have nothing about it on their website (although they did acknowledge the practice in one email I found). Declan McCullagh asked for a list of blocked sites but Google refused to supply one. The authors list 113 sites they found thru trial-and-error to be blocked and again let you submit your own and record the results. Disclaimer: I assisted the authors with portions of the report....

Hey, Regional Carriers Can Merge Too

Hey, Regional Carriers Can Merge Too 01/06/2005 06:52 AM
When Cingular finished buying AT&T Wireless, it was as if everyone who wrote about mobile operators had a pre-conceived notion that the market needed six carriers. To fill that empty slot, suddenly Alltel started to get much more recognition -- despite being a regional carrier. With Sprint and Nextel merging, there's going to be more room on that six spot list. However, it looks like this merger mania also represents a chance for some of these regional operators to consolidate a bit themselves. The latest is that it looks like Alltel (rather than being bought by Verizon Wireless, as some had thought) is trying to buy Western Wireless, another regional carrier. Both are CDMA-based, so that makes integration easier. Also, with little overlap, the combined companies start to look a lot more like a national carrier (though, they're not completely there). What was that about consolidation among the national carriers creating less competition? It certainly looks like some of the regional players see it as a vacuum they can fill. Anyone taking bets on which regional carriers will be rumored to be merging next?

Pre-Filtering The Spam

Pre-Filtering The Spam 06/29/2004 03:54 PM
My anti-spam system now uses a variety of server and client side filters to help keep the damn stuff out of the inbox. Now, some are suggesting an even earlier level "pre-filter" for spam. HP Labs has made a fairly simple discovery that even without various email authentication systems, it's pretty easy to get a quick determination as to whether or not an email is spam. The system they developed looks at whether or not the server sending you the email normally sends good emails or sends spam. With that one determination, they can properly pre-classify emails at a pretty high success rate. It's not a replacement for a spam filter at all. They know it's not that good. However, what it can do is do a pre-sort for prioritization purposes -- so that good emails tend to make it through the real spam filters faster. In a number of ways, it's pretty sad that we now need "quality of service" setups for our email.

Free software, for the sake of regional

12/03/2003 08:44 AM
Nice Bruce Sterling editorial from this month's Wired on the move in Extremadura, Spain, to develop a local flavor of Linux:
The features may be mundane, but they add up to something quite new: a patriotic regional operating system. The emailer's logo is a stork, Extremadura's most beloved bird. The word processor is named after a famous local poet. The desktop is crammed with hallowed symbols of the homeland. Extremaduran schoolkids could stand up and pledge allegiance to this thing...

This deeply rooted regional approach could prove a more nurturing environment for Tux than either the EU, with its stifling bureaucracy, or the US, where lawyers for SCO are eager to sue the daylights out of anyone who dares to propagate the penguin. Right now, most of the action is in government, where officials are beginning to wake up to the advantages of open standards and malleable code - and not having to pay Americans for any of it. India is releasing Linux variations in local dialects from Assamese to Telugu. China, Japan, and South Korea are collaborating on their own OS. South Africa recently approved an open source strategy, and similar things are going on in Argentina, Australia, Bulgaria, Peru, and Ukraine.

ISP Hesitate Over Spam Filtering

ISP Hesitate Over Spam Filtering 06/03/2004 02:24 AM
As the spam battle wages on, most of the focus is on end-users and law enforcement. Not too many people seem to focus on the role of ISPs, who sometimes do take a more proactive role in stopping spam. The problem, though, is that when the ISP filters spam, they often run into issues with false positives. If the filters are too loose (to avoid false positives) then too much spam gets through, and users are upset. If the filters are too tight, important messages go missing, and users are upset. Many ISPs are realizing, at the very least, they need to let the end-user have access to the spam folder, so they can occasionally sort through it for false positives - but very few users ever bother to look through it. Some ISPs don't offer any kind of filtering at all, claiming that they don't see how to make money off of it - which seems especially short-sighted. If they can offer sufficient spam filtering, they're much more likely to keep customers than if they simply let everything through when customers are looking to their providers to provide protection from the onslaught of spam. No matter what, it's becoming clear that the spam fight needs to be approached from various angles, and many customers are likely to bail out on ISPs that don't at least offer a spam filtering option.

Spam filtering, the next chapter

Spam filtering, the next chapter 05/24/2004 09:17 AM
I've been experiencing good results filtering out spam with a combination of Popfile (a Bayesian classifier) and the built-in filter in Eudora 6.  I get well over 1,000 spams a day, so I need accuracy both in identifying spams and avoiding false positives with legitimate mail.

The biggest problem with my setup is that it all runs on the client side.  Popfile works as a transparent proxy that runs on my Windows machine.  I don't see the spam in my inbox, but I still have to download it before it can be filtered.  As the spam volumes have increased, that has become an increasingly significant burden.  Every check pulls down scores of messages, most of which wind up in the trash.  I've had several cases where the sheer numbers crash Eudora. Getting email through my Treo is basically a waste of time, because it doesn't have the filters.  If I'm on the road and don't check my mail, there are thousands of messages waiting for me when I get back.

I finally had time this weekend to set up filtering on the server side.  Werbach.com and my other domains run through a Web hosting provider, Pair Networks, which offers a version of SpamAssassin.  The tricky part was configuring it to automatically filter or delete messages, using procmail, rather than just putting something in the email header for later processing on the client.

I think I have it working now.  I'm using SpamAssassin on a forgiving setting, because the client-side filters are still running after the mail goes through.  If I can just weed out 60% of my spams before they reach my machine, life would be much better.  So far, it looks like I can do significantly better than that.

I'm still tweaking the set-up, so it's possible some legitimate email will get stuck in the filters.  If you write to me and don't get a response for a while, please try again.

I am about to dump GoDaddy as a host!

I am about to dump GoDaddy as a host! 04/11/2005 05:35 PM

I am about as pissed off as one can get at this moment. You know I upgraded and moved the hosting for this domain from a shared host to a virtual dedicated box on GoDaddy.

This was primarily because of the terrible support I was having over at infinology. I barely needed a virtual dedicated box, but liked the flexibility that a configurable server would give me. I have off-loaded nearly all of my podcast audio content to a third party hosting service and only host the low traffic wma and ogg files on this site.

So what am I all pissed about. This server has been crashing nearly every night and I am about sick of it. My admin has done everything he can do and yet it seems to crash about the same time every day. So I figured it had to be something GoDaddy was doing. I sent off a message to tech support and check out the reply I got.

----------- Quote -----------------
This is in response to your customer service inquiry regarding geeknewscentral.com.

Your original inquiry was:
Server Keeps Crashing

We have researched the issues you raised in your inquiry and have determined the following: This site is getting alot of hits. You may wish to consider a dedicated server. Short of that, you may want to try optimizing Apache, but that is only going to accomplish so much in a virtual environment. If traffic to this site keeps trending upward, then you will have little choice but to move to a dedicated box, in the not too distant future. You may want to start planning for that now.

---------- Left Name of the Tech off the Reply ---------

Sounds to me like instead of wanting to do something they are just telling me I need to upgrade and pay more money. The only reason we left the other shared hosting provider was because the customer service was bad. I had plenty of spare bandwidth on the old host. The shared host which I used to be on had nearly 1000 domains being hosted on a single box it never missed a beat and was able to handle the load that was put on it.

So I move a single domain plus some minor traffic domains to a virtual dedicated server and it cannot handle the load of a single site. Give me a break. You would think that on a shared server I would have had more issues if what this tech says is true I should have been killing the other 999 domains that were on that box. Give me a break this is a excuse.

I have a substantial bandwidth allotment on this server and thus far have not used anywhere near all of it in a given month. Plus I think they are reporting bandwidth from the log files and not from the switch so I think I am being cheated on my actual bandwidth usage. Inquiries on how they measure bandwidth has went un answered.

So are these really techs answering my trouble tickets or are they actually sales people.

The management at GoDaddy has been great when I have talked to someone in charge the have bent over backwards. But their is a obvious disconnect still going on over their.

If I am over using the service explain why and then tell me why a shared server could handle the load just fine even with audio files being served from it. Considering the daily traffic this site is getting they box I am on should be more than enough.

I could put this site on one of GoDaddys shared host offload the wma and ogg files to a secondary service and would probably not have any issues but I guess the traffic that is coming to their site would cause them to tell me to upgrade to a VDS. Personally I am sick of it and will probably start shopping for a new provider again. How come these companies cannot live up to their part of the bargain.

If they don't want people using the bandwidth they offer with the package then they should change the package and explain in detail what they allow on the box. I hate excuses and I hate companies that oversell a product.

New Installation Instructions 08/14/2004 05:06 PM
The latest online version of the PHP Manual contains a completely reorganized Installation and Configuration part, which is now splitted up by platforms and servers to ease your first steps with PHP. The manual Windows installation instructions are completely revised, and now suggest you to set environment variables instead of moving files. This way upgrades and configuration changes become more easier. Hereby we would like to kindly ask everyone who published an article or howto about installing PHP on Windows to revise those instructions according to our latest guide. These new instructions got distributed with PHP 5.0.1 in both the source code and binary versions, and will continue to be shipped with future versions of PHP.

Manipulation technique found in the Diebold central tabulator -- 1,000 of these systems are in place, and they count up to two million votes at a time. By entering a 2-digit code in a hidden location, a second set of votes is created. This set of votes can be changed, so that it no longer matches the correct votes. The voting system will then read the totals from the bogus vote set. It takes only seconds to change the votes, and to date not a single location in the U.S. has implemented security measures to fully mitigate the risks.
  • If this is true, it's perhaps the worst news yet in a saga that is monumentally scary: the prospect that voting machines aren't just flawed, but perhaps open to direct tampering. No one should trust Diebold to begin with, given its woeful security record, a track record that should have disqualified it entirely from selling voting machines. But if this is proved out -- and where are the authorities, anyway? -- it ought to be the last straw.
