Porn Sites Using Blogspot To Game Google

Porn Sites Using Blogspot To Game Google 08/03/2004 12:32 PM
I think the only thing that's really all that noteworthy about this story is that it didn't happen sooner. In fact, it probably did happen sooner, but the press is just catching on. For quite some time now, people have realized that blogs tend to get higher Page Rank in Google due to their frequently updated nature, and tendency for cross-linking, so a group of porn sites have gotten together and are using bogus Blogspot blogs to boost the Page Rank of their own porn sites. Of course, as the article points out, this will now get to be much more popular, search engines will adjust and it will become useless again.

Google Throws A Party For Those Who Game
The System

Google Throws A Party For Those Who Game
The System
11/06/2003 08:31 PM
More and more people are saying that "Google is broken," as the search results are increasingly less relevant. Much of the problem is that some people see to have figured out how to successfully game the system. For quite a while Google could stay ahead of those folks, but in some areas it looks like they've fallen behind. On the whole, I still find Google quite useful, but it's not as automatic as it once was. For the folks who trick Google (they prefer to call themselves "search engine optimizers") there's a once-a-month or so day they dread when Google updates its algorithm and the results go through a "Google Dance" as the listing move around. If Google does a good job (which the SEO folks pray against), then improperly displayed SEO client websites slide down the Google list. If not, they stay up at the top. So, how does Google deal with these folks? They throw them a party, amusingly called (you guessed it) the "Google Dance." Google says that they're targeting the ethical search engine optimizers, who they want to target with good suggestions that helps both sides, but since it's tough to tell the good from the bad, anyone is welcome. Some slightly more cynical folks think that Google is just trying to butter them up and figure out what their secrets are to improve their algorithm. Both might be right.

More loose science Google mining today, starting with a sampling of the five major next generation portable gaming systems. I'm a little surprised -- the Nintendo DS comes out on top, even over the Sony PSP. My guess is science is failing us here, as another query for "playstation portable" pulls up another 666,000 hits (oooweeoooh), which added to the to the "sony psp" results brings us up to 1,425,000, or about 200k over Nintendo. My guess is it's somewhere in between those numbers and it's fair to say the Nintendo DS and the PSP are, buzz-wise, in a dead heat. The Nokia N-Gage QD makes a sizeable showing, which is pretty respectable until you run just "n-gage," which nets a response of over 4 million. Since we're trying to compare next generation unreleased and just-released hardware, though, I left those results out. The Gizm(welovepigs)ondo is just a blip on the radar, in part because of the recent name change, and in part because it is doomed to failure. The Tapwave Zodiac does fare any better, which is a bit disappointing. Time to rally the troops, Tapwave.

The next Google Buzz Index, where we see which of the possible names for the second iteration of Microsoft's Xbox have the highest buzz, is after the jump.

Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live "actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game so far.

Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PM
Vision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency) volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and personalities while managing their activities and personal relationships like “The SIMS®”. Game Be In You?

It appears that Sony has now patented the concept of beaming sensory info directly into your brain without requiring any kind of invasive surgery or anything (phew!). They claim it could be used in video games either to add in sensory info like smell and taste, but also to provide richer gaming experiences for deaf and blind people. While there is something both fascinating and creepy about this idea, it seems like the sort of thing that would have plenty of uses outside of the video game world -- and those might be a bit more impressive than just letting people really jack into a game. Anyway, since patents don't actually have to be based on something that actually works, this idea is... well... mostly just in someone's brain.
