Another open letter from Darl McBride,
CEO of SCO
12/04/2003 04:49 PMSince last March The SCO Group ("SCO") has been involved in an
increasingly rancorous legal controversy over violations of our UNIX
intellectual property contract, and what we assert is the widespread
presence of our copyrighted UNIX code in Linux. These controversies
will rage for at least another 18 months, until our original case
comes to trial. Meanwhile, the issues SCO has raised have become one
of the hottest technology stories of the year, and often our positions
on these issues have been misunderstood or misrepresented. Starting
with this letter, I'd like to explain our positions on the key issues.
In the months ahead we'll post a series of letters on the SCO website
(www.sco.com). Each of these letters will examine one of the many
issues SCO has raised. In this letter, we'll provide our view on the
key issue of U.S. copyright law versus the GNU GPL (General Public
License).

More on SCO's War on Linux
More on SCO's War on Linux
06/23/2004 03:52 PMBrad Stone (Wired): The Linux Killer. If SCO loses, the company is likely
toast. But winning will be a tall order. SCO must show that the old,
murky contracts between AT&T (which developed Unix), Novell (which
bought the operating system from AT&T in 1993), and the old Santa
Cruz Operation deliberately transferred the Unix copyrights to the new
SCO Group; it also must show that it owns the rights to derivative
flavors of Unix, like IBM's AIX. Finally, and perhaps most difficult,
SCO must prove IBM and other Linux programmers around the world got
sloppy and ported proprietary code into Linux. Legal experts tracking
the case think each hurdle - let alone all three - is difficult to
clear. The odds are clearly against SCO.

Virus continues spread, launches attack
Virus continues spread, launches attack
02/10/2004 02:47 AM
The MyDoom virus, which has been racing across
the internet for the past week,
continues to spread. As analysts had predicted, unremoved copies
of the program
began a distributed denial of service attack yesterday on the Web
site for the SCO Group.
SCO has received attention for its high-profile campaign to win
licensing fees from Linux users, whom, SCO argues, are using some code
to which SCO claims patent ownership. The DoS attacks are coded to continue
through February 12th. In the meantime, SCO has set up an alternative site .
However, the SCO attack might be a ruse, a misdirection, or only
one component of a larger strategy: to set up
distributed relays for sending spam .
A variant virus is also operating, and is coded to attack Microsoft's home page. Its infection
rate has been minor, however.

just a quick note on the news that
Novell has bought SUSE Linux just

g Ximian. Connecting the two very obvious dots isn't particularly
difficult (which also makes the third "anti-SCO" dot a little more
understandable). The deal also includes an investment from IBM, of
which much will probably be spent fending off angry SCO lawyers.
