LED Molex Cables

LED Molex Cables 07/19/2004 11:15 AM

scythe_molex.jpg imageAlthough they may be dying out slowly in this age of Serial ATA and other four-prong power cables, the venerable Molex DC power connector is going to be around for a while longer. And what happens when there's a replaceable part inside the modern-day PC? That's right, someone puts lights in it. These PowerMod6 Molex cables from Japanese peripheral maker Scythe may not be out in the States yet, but I would expect to find the $10 (or so) cables imported by your favorite aftermarket mod shop soon enough.

Sony tranSticks: Wireless Cables

Sony tranSticks: Wireless Cables 07/14/2004 09:59 AM

transtick2b2.jpg imageResearch-types at Sony's Computer Science Laboratories have developed a concept called 'transSticks,' virtually connected Memory Sticks that act as simple networking cables between any two devices that support the standard. Although there are certainly bugs to work out, I'm sure (like security, although they seem to be keeping that in mind), being able to throw away networking cables completely would be great -- even if it necessitated every device having a Memory Stick slot. When someone develops a pairing standard that works like this between different card types, that will be more impressive.

Or wait, what if the wireless radios were inside the devices themselves and operated over a standard protocol, like 802.11b? I suppose that's just crazy talk. (I feel the need to disclaim my hateration -- this is actually pretty cool.)

Zip-Linq cables: device charging without
bricks

Zip-Linq cables: device charging without
bricks
12/22/2003 10:11 AM
It used to be that I shlepped a power-strip (sometimes two!) with me when I went on the road, because they haven't built the hotel-room yet that has enough plugs to charge my entire device array, not least because everything that fits in my pocket comes with a charger whose transformer brick eats two or three outlets.

Then I discovered USB and FireWire charging -- and more specifically, Zip-Linq retractable cables. Instead of plugging everything into the wall, you attach your device to a little bon-bon-sized retractable wire that goes into one of your computer's ports and plug your computer into the wall. This is especially handy if you're travelling overseas, since it's just not practical to buy enough Euro-220 adapters to get your devices to talk to the local alternating current. Your laptop probably has an international power-supply requiring only a plug adapter, and once that's attached to the wall, you've got know-quantity/know-interface power for all your gizmos.

Before I leave on my next trip overseas tomorrow, I will slip into my pocket a Firewire cable (for my little backup harddrive, which I yanked out of an old PowerBook and put into a tiny enclosure, so that I can back up every day on the road), a cellphone charger (one for my US Motorola iDen phone, one for my European Nokia phone -- and cables are available for most manufacturers: Motorola, Sony-Ericsson, Samsung, Kyocera, Sanyo) and a PDA charger (Palm, iPaq).

Rael crashed on my sofa this weekend and pointed out that Zip-Linq is now shipping a wall-adapter, so that if your laptop is unavailable, you can plug this into the socket and still charge up.

The best part is that at $10-20 these wires are actually cheaper than the manufacturers' chargers for the most part. Link

iDo Script Scheduler 1.5.1 03/14/2003 03:45 PM
iDo Script Scheduler lets you create a schedule to run your scripts and it can also be controlled by AppleScript. Not only can you automatically launch your scripts, but each time they run, you can pass a line of parameters to your script.

Release notes: Background software updated to match PowerKey 4.1.4. Added an "Execute Event" item to the Edit menu to run a script immediately. Added a contextual menu to create, edit and delete events. In some circumstances, if iDo Script Scheduler was used in conjunction with the PowerKey 4.1.3 software, the scheduled scripts failed to run -- fixed. In Mac OS 9, hot key events were affected by the state of the caps lock key, even though it was not displayed in the event editor -- fixed. (In OS X, the caps lock key is ignored when creating or activating hot keys.)

XHTML and the script tag

XHTML and the script tag 01/07/2004 06:49 PM
So for some odd reason, my alpha Kinja design that was visible in IE, Camino, Firebird, and Safari on IE and Mac suddenly stopped rendering on IE/Mac, IE/Windows, and Safari/Mac (didn't test the others, was too busy freaking out). I tried everything I could think of, validated the code (clean XHMTL 1.0 Strict), validated the CSS, had some friends take a look, and nothing. "View source" showed code, but nothing appeared on screen. Finally, after commenting out code line by line, I nailed it. In my header, I had:

<script src="/functions.js" type="text/javascript" />

While the validator liked this, and Camino had no problem, the other browers barfed big time and treated it as an unclosed tag, rendering nothing more. A quick change to:

<script src="/functions.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

and all is right with the world again. I write this because I'm sure I'll have this problem again, and then Google will help me (hi idiot Meg from the future making the same mistakes again!) In the meantime, it may help you.
