Andrew Leonard writes "Salon has a loooong interview with Eugene Jarvis, the creator of legendary arcade video games Defender and Robotron, up today. Jarvis talks about why he is pro-emulators, anti-Grand Theft Auto, still focused on arcade games, and deeply worried about terrorism. It's a good read, even if you have to watch a ten second ad to get access."

:-)

Marc's memories.....

I met Eugene Jarvis at a bar on Clark St. in Chicago - in 1982.

We were both in the videogame business - his game 'Defender' was a lot cooler than ours - 'Prof. Pac-Man' - but he didn't seem to mind.

And what a coincidence - had lunch with Andrew Leonard - yesterday.

What a small world this is turning into.

Maybe I'll get lucky and run into Eugene at: the GDC or E3 - this year.

It's feeling better and better to be back in the gaming world - after 21 years of being away.

Eugene, Oregon, Wants Downtown Wi-Fi

Eugene, Oregon, Wants Downtown Wi-Fi 03/27/2005 06:15 PM

The city's daily newspaper urges Wi-Fi rollout: I grew up in Eugene. This is a fairly conservative paper in a pretty liberal town. And there's no sock-puppet talk here. Just a concern about keeping Eugene, a kind of island in the middle of the state with a large liberal-arts university, on track to keep the economy humming. They don't suggest city-wide Wi-Fi, but downtown Wi-Fi for free, which is a good starting place to understand usage.

Eugene's downtown used to be cited by city planners because in the 1960s, they converted from a street-based downtown to a pedestrian-only one. Streets were paved over. Remarkably, shoppers and businesses slowly fled downtown into surrounding areas and the Valley River Center Mall a few miles away on the other side of the Willamette River. A few years ago, the pedestrian mall was ripped out and life has slowly returned to downtown.

Anatomy of comment spam script vendors:

One of the curious things about blog comment spam is how asymmetrical it is. When I've had my site spammed, it feels like a desecration. If you have ever had your house broken into, it is a similar feeling. It is as if someone has come into your house while you were out, defecated on the floor, ransacked through all your belongings, and made off with your valuables. I have read some pretty impressive rants from people after they've been hammered, and they seem to have a similar impression. It feels like a personal affront. But it isn't. It's just a script that somebody wrote that connects to a database they have populated. Spammers never see our rants and raves about their activities. But who does write and sell these scripts? I have always been curious about what kind of scum writes and sells what must be increasingly sophisticated scripts, so when I noticed that my weblog was being hit repeatedly by a strange entry, www.php-soft.com, I wondered what it was and checked out the site. It turns out to be a vendor of comment spamming software. From the sales pitch at http://www.php-soft.com/advanced_blog_guestbook_messages_board_submitt er (not using proper hyperlinks for what I hope are obvious reasons): This is the perfect unique tool that quickly submits your information to any messages board/guestbook/blog or any other web script using the most effective technique and offers you fantastic opportunities for your web site promotion, increasing the link popularity of your web project. The most effective method of increasing the link popularity of your site is to post to online messages boards, guestbooks and blogs (e.g. LiveJournal). I am very glad that we can introduce our messages boards/blogs/guestbooks submission software to you.... We have the biggest database of discussion boards, guestbooks, blogs with high page rank. Our advanced submitter is a set of php scripts which can easily be installed on your home PC or your hosting server. This software is useful for any kind of data submission. You can fill the database with information using the following methods: manually one by one, from the list copied into textarea, from the textual file, gathering URLs using Google search engine (enter any script name [e.g. addpost.cgi] into URLs management tool and let our software add all such scripts URLs to your database with one button click), generate URLs list using special rules (regular expressions). You can use...

More from Clarke... Richard Clarke terrorizes the White House The vice president commented that there was "no great success in dealing with terrorists" during the 1990s, when you were serving under President Clinton. He asked, "What were they doing?"It's possible that the vice president has spent so little time studying the terrorist phenomenon that he doesn't know about the successes in the 1990s. There were many. The Clinton administration stopped Iraqi terrorism against the United States, through military intervention. It...

Cory Doctorow responds

Cory Doctorow responds 04/01/2005 06:26 AM

I got an email from Cory Doctorow saying that my theoretical republishing of his book -- giving myself authorship credit, offering it for sale, and seeking distribution -- would be "fraudulent." So we know that Cory has a line. We're making progress. (Note I'm not going to publish his email, he can do that if he likes, and I'd like it if he would.)

Now, as I've said so many times (one more time won't hurt), I don't like it when a big heartless company takes my work and modifies it in a way that makes it hard to tell what they wrote and what I wrote. I'm concerned that if I let this company do it, then another company is going to, and another and pretty soon they're going to be competing on the basis of how "useful" they make my work, again without my permission, and with no compensation to me. I'm concerned that they may make changes I don't agree with, or even worse, change the meaning of what I wrote so as to confuse people about what I think. I quit working for a big publication because they were doing this, I went independent so my writing could have integrity, so it could truly represent what I think, to the best of my ability. Cory, Google crossed my line. To use your terminology, they're doing something fraudulent by passing off their derivative work as mine.

BTW, I say "I think," when stating an opinion. Cory and his colleagues (who mostly are not lawyers) state their legal opinion as fact. He also says "As you know" before saying something that I don't even agree with. That's just plain disrespectful, and makes discourse more difficult.
