Whither The Belkin PureAV Wireless
Digital Audio Receiver?

Whither The Belkin PureAV Wireless
Digital Audio Receiver?
07/13/2004 09:01 AM

belkin_dar.jpg imageThe Belkin PureAV Wireless Digital Audio Receiver sounded like a pretty decent product when PCMag ran their little blurb. A simple and cheap ($130) 802.11b receiver that could be dropped on any wireless network, slurp up your MP3s and other audio, and pump out sound to your stereo. You could even listen to internet radio without having any PCs on. So, uhm, where is it? There's nothing on Belkin's website about it, and PCMag hasn't given us anything else. (Thanks, Chris.)

Review: Belkin Bluetooth mouse

Review: Belkin Bluetooth mouse 09/23/2004 09:57 PM
I've been looking for the ideal Bluetooth mouse almost as long as I've had my PowerBook G4. Unfortunately this isn't it. I chose the Belkin bluetooth mouse for its price and number of buttons, and because Microsoft's Bluetooth IntelliMouse isn't compatible with Macs.

The Belkin mouse is fairly large, but is very comfortable to use if you're right-handed. If you have a computer with Bluetooth built in, you won't need to use any adapter with it, which makes it more convenient than regular cordless mice.

Belkin to Offer Airgo Wireless Products

Belkin to Offer Airgo Wireless Products 08/09/2004 09:46 AM

airgo_lgoo.jpg imageBelkin has signed on with wireless vendor Airgo to release new products based on the MIMO wireless technology, a longer-range "multiple in, multiple out" radio system that is compatible with existing Wi-Fi standards (b and g in this case) but can reach speeds of up to 108-megabits per second (compared to 802.11g's 54-mbit rates).

The Belkin products, a MIMO router and a client card, will be the first to officially adopt the MIMO technology, which is in the running to become the next official Wi-Fi standard (Intel is sponsoring its main competitor).

Some companies did the same thing with 802.11g, jumping on board before the standard was officially announced. Remember the other standards? No, me neither.

Screenshot Dream is a software implementation of a Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) receiver. All you need to receive DRM transmissions is a PC with a sound card and a modified analog short-wave (MW, LW) receiver.
Changes:
Many changes have taken place in the AM demodulation with a separate main window for AM, noise reduction, PLL and CW demodulation, and a changed AM bandpass filter. A SNR spectrum plot has been implemented in DRM mode, which provides information used to improve reception under interference situations. History plots were added for SNR/Audio, Delay/Doppler, and Frequency/Sample Rate.

A sleepy DISH Network receiver

A sleepy DISH Network receiver 02/01/2005 09:15 PM
Now that I'm living in the wilds of New Hampshire, I've been required to turn to satellite for my television reception requirements. My housemates and I ordered the DISH Network and opted for the DISH player with DVR (receiver model 522). After only a few days, we decided that the DVR feature wasn't as user-friendly as TiVo and I purchased a new TiVo. Soon we discovered that more often than not, when we went to watch a taped program, all that TiVo had recorded was a floating DISH Network logo. It appeared that the DISH receiver had (unbeknownst to TiVo) turned off. I called DISH to report the problem with the receiver, only to find out that the DISH receiver is programmed to go into "sleep mode" after four hours of inactivity. Which means that every night it turns off (and most times it does so during the day as well), making it nearly impossible for TiVo to tape anything. The DISH representative suggested I program the DISH DVR to record the same event as TiVo, thereby guaranteeing that the receiver would be active when TiVo began to record, but that seems like a ridiculous solution to a problem that shouldn't exist. (Never mind the fact that with TiVo season passes and wish lists, you don't even know when something you want will be broadcast unless you are constantly checking your "To-Do" list. I pointed out how time consuming it would be to have to do this double-step for each and every show one wanted to tape, but he claimed once I learned how to do it, it would take me only a minute or two at most per program.) I asked the DISH support person if there were someway to turn off the sleep mode, or lengthen the amount of time before the sleep mode became active, but he said that wasn't possible. According to him, the receiver, "is complicated and needs downtime for updates and maintenance." Also according to the support person, I'm the only person who's reported this problem and found the "solution" to double-record unsatisfactory. "DISH Networks has over 10 million satisfied customers," according the support rep. My 1 in 10 million "luck" makes me think I should enter the lottery more often. So my question for you is: Do you have a DISH receiver? And if so, have you experienced this problem? Do you know of any way to hack the DISH receiver so it doesn't go into a standby or sleep mode? And do DirecTV receivers do this? Because if they don't, I'm very willing to change my service. Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions you may have.
