12/02/2003 01:24 AMOk, so $30 is a really good price for a DVD/VCR combination player,
but is it worth nearly crushing another human being to death just to
get one? Apparently so:A stampede of shoppers left a woman seriously
hurt this morning. She was trampled by a crowd of bargain hunters at a
Central Florida Walmart. 41-year-old Patricia Vanlester is at Halifax
Medical Center tonight. Family members say she came to Walmart to buy
an advertised DVD, but what she got was a trip to the hospital...When
the store finally opened, shoppers grabbed for the item. People
started fighting for the DVD player and pushed Vanlester to the
ground. "I screamed and said stop don't step on her," Ellzey says. "My
sister is on the ground but no one would listen." Walmart employees

02/10/2004 01:14 PMThe Detroit Free Press has broken a story about how Detroit's
SuperBowl 2006 bid used a doctored photo to sex-up Detroit's
snaggle-tooth skyline, lighting up abandoned buildings with Photoshop.
Don't miss the killer infographic.
In real life, though, at least 10 of the photo's buildings are
abandoned hulks. Some are burned-out, roofless and scarred with soot.
Artists touched up the photo by splashing light onto darkened windows
and streets and adding roofs where there were none.
The final product made Detroit's lonely blocks look as Super
Bowl-worthy as busy Houston.
"We want to do the same thing, put our best foot forward and turn on
all the lights we can," said Michelle Fusco, a spokeswoman for the
Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau, which helped staff the
Detroit booth.

hip-e: Gadget System for Teens
hip-e: Gadget System for Teens
08/19/2004 09:44 AM
A company called "Digital
Lifestyles" has a new product line out called "hip-e," which after you
get done cringing over the name look fairly decent, but probably way
overpriced to properly market to the teen segment. The whole concept
revolves around the "node," a Pentium M-based iMac-esque desktop PC,
with a 17-inch built-in widescreen LCD (1400 by 900 pixels). The node
is an odd mixture of cut corners and nice options, such as 512MB of
RAM standard - that's nice - but only "high performance video," which
means it will probably not play videogames worth a damn (and that's
before you factor in the 1.5GHz processor). So it's hard to decide
what parent or self-sufficient kid is going to want to drop $1,700 on
a neat but underpowered machine when they could probably get a couple
of eMachines or something for the same price.
Clearly, though, Digital Lifestyles is hoping the cross-promotion
of the Hip-e will push more units, and they're doing it in both
interesting and annoying ways. The detachable "beatbox" that comes
with the node PC also functions as external speakers for the "playme"
512MB flash drive ($150); that's a pretty cool trick. But the "Squads"
idea, which looks to be some sort of viral advertising masked as
teenage social networking looks really pathetic (although it's not out
yet, so take that for what it's worth).
Marketing to teens is a fine idea, but the Hip-e may be trying a
little too hard. Kids can sniff out focus groups' pawprints from a
mile away. (Thanks, Mike!)

Yet Another Company Targeting PCs At

Yet Another Company Targeting PCs At
Teens
08/17/2004 05:02 PMThis is certainly not the first time a company has tried this (though,
the article suggests otherwise), but a new computer is about to hit
the market which is
specifically targeted at teenagers
-- both at the hardware and software level. The accessories and case
are designed to be stylish, the hard drive is designed to hold a lot
of music, and the software is designed to appeal to busy multi-tasking
kids. It also has close integration with a mobile phone (if you
happen to be a Sprint customer) and an MP3 player/digital storage
keychain device. It looks like the company has at least done a bit
more work than past attempts to try to create a more complete package,
and they did obviously use a lot of teens in helping to design the
system. However, marketing to teens is notoriously difficult -- and
the fact that they're signing up teens as commission-based sales
people may not go over too well with some. Besides, if the computer
comes off as being even the slightest bit uncool (or targeted at kids
too young or likely to become obsolete too quickly, etc.) the whole
idea could die a quick death. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of
the finished product (due out this fall), but the fact that it's a
desktop machine may be problematic as well. These days, kids tend to
identify themselves with their mobile phones, and the freedom that
presents, and may be less interested in some desktop stuck back in
their room and coated in fuzzy pink fur. Even if kids to prefer to
stay in
their room at home, having something that's portable is where the
real bragging power comes in.

Do you have teens driving and do you not

07/27/2004 03:53 AMI can only say that I am thankful that they did not have a blackbox
that could have been installed in my vehicles as a 16 year old. My dad
probably would have pulled my drives license the first week. I somehow
survived that but it seems now parents can have a tracking device
installed in their kids cars to make sure they are driving the speed
limit and not doing some of the real dumb things many of us did that
we where lucky to survive. (Yes Eric, I remember that pass on the

To be honest with my oldest child fast approaching driving age I

youth,
Protecting Teens Online. More than half of
American families with teenagers use filters to limit access to
potentially harmful online content – a 65% increase from the number
of those who used filters in 2000. But big majorities of both teens
and parents believe that teens do things on the internet that their
parents would not approve of. A new survey of 1,100 youth – those
ages 12 to 17 – and 1,100 of their parents shows that 54% of
internet-connected families now use some sort of internet filter or
monitoring software, up from 41% of internet-connected families who
used filters in 2000, the most recent time the Pew Internet & American
Life Project surveyed on the issue. In all, about 19 million youth
live in homes with internet connections and the number of children
living in homes with filters has grown from 7 million in 2000 to 12
