Apple to become mobile carrier? Next
logical step?
12/28/2004 07:19 AM
According to this piece at CanalPDA.com, Albert Slope, VP of Apple's Mobile Platforms and Services business unit, has confirmed that Apple plans to build its own mobile carrier. CanalPDA.com quotes Slope as saying, "creating our own mobile carrier is the next logical step in our strategy of providing the Apple experience to the users of our products. We believe that existing carriers are not offering the flexibility not the performance consumers deserve, so we have decided to move forward, providing cellphone users a full, personal communications and information environent, with the user-friendliness that has become synonymous with Apple's products and services." With talk of deals with Motorola to produce iPhones, this comes as little surprise. But what does come as a surprise that CanalPDA got such an exclusive. Is it true? Who knows. That's why they call them rumors.

Ilkone i800: Mobile Islamic Handset

Ilkone i800: Mobile Islamic Handset 07/12/2004 08:52 AM

ilkone.jpg imageDubai-based start-up IltoneTel has announced their first handset designed for the Islamic community, the Ilkone i800. While the phone itself isn't that interesting in and of itself (it's even promoted as being "moderate looking"), the software provides some interesting and useful tools, including Hijri and Gregorian calendars (including date conversion), 5-method Qibla direction (for determining the correct direction in which to pray), English and Uthmanic versions of the Quran, and alarms with prayer times for more than 5000 cities (including the "azan voice," an audible call to prayer). The i800 should be available before year's end in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, and India (but not Dubai?)

Their marketing material is surpisingly fun, too, as you can see.
