The Mojave Spaceport

The Mojave Spaceport 06/22/2004 01:12 AM

One of our associate writers covered the Spaceship One coverage today but I could not help but make a comment. I sat the alarm for a 3am wake-up here in Hawaii and the wife nudged me out of bed after my body was more inclined to stay in bed.

I quickly turned on CNN and watched the proceedings. My only commentary on the whole ordeal is that I am damn proud to live in a country where a bunch of guys can put their heads together and pull something this major off. Their are a number of teams racing for the x-prize but if they don't hurry up scaled composites and space ship one is going to claim the prize.

This far though I have not heard how much money has been invested to make this happen. I told the wife today that before we retire I am hoping that taking a ride to the upper limits of the atmosphere will be reachable for the average person.

Here are some great pictures of the days events. [www.mojavebooks.com ]

Jeff Bezos and his Spaceport

Jeff Bezos and his Spaceport 03/22/2005 04:31 PM

Space venture has West Texas county abuzz: Has Jeff Bezos jumped the shark? I never picked him for something like this, I guess. It even makes Branson look level-headed.

Over the next 30 to 40 minutes, Simpson said Bezos told him the goal of his venture — known as Blue Origin — was to send a spaceship into orbit that launches and lands vertically, like a rocket.

"He told me their first spacecraft is going to carry three people up to the edge of space and back," Simpson said. "But ultimately, his thing is space colonization."

Mojave Airport to become the first licensed private Spaceport. We all know that the 2 leading competitors to the X-Prize competition work out of Mojave. In the late 80's I lived in California and flew around the state in a King Air quite a bit and may have toured the Scaled Composites plant. If I remember it wasn't much of a plant more like a small hanger. But to think that the Mojave Airport
could be the first private spaceport blows me away. For those that have never been Mojave it is pretty isolated. I just wish I could remember for sure why my employer had me out there in the first place, some things you really remember some you don't. Guess I'm getting old :) [Slashdot]

The futility of arguing with paid
advocates

The futility of arguing with paid
advocates
09/08/2004 12:37 PM
I once stood in a hotel lobby in Amman, Jordan, listening quietly as a passionate GNU/Linux advocate tried to get Microsoft employees to agree that free software would be better for the Muslim world than proprietary software. His opponents were getting paid to boost Microsoft and proprietary software and couldn't change their beliefs -- at least in public -- without losing their jobs, so there was no way the Linux advocate could "win" this argument. I've witnessed similar scenes all over the world, and cringed at every one. Linux boosters shouldn't waste their (our) energy trying to convince unconvicable people. There are better uses for that passion.

Unlicensed Low Frequency Spectrum
06/03/2004 04:47 PM
Four admirable spectrum licensing wonks have started an advocacy site on low-frequency unlicensed wireless: Kevin Werbach, Andrew Odlyzko, David Isenberg, and Clay Shirky are a combined powerhouse of intellectual might and regulatory expertise. Their site promotes the notion of unshackling spectrum from outdated technical notions that restrict innovation. The FCC has become more and more amenable to these ideas, as it toys with rulemaking vastly different than anything that's come before. The site is funded by Microsoft. I had some back and forth with Werbach about what that means, and he has clarified the issue on their About page. Microsoft is funding their time to devote to the issue, but the editorial voice is independent. I know all of these gentlemen except Odlyzko, and can vouch that you wouldn't see the door hit their backside if there were a conflict of interest or an attempt to change their statements....

Bill Gates: Free Culture advocates =
Commies

Bill Gates: Free Culture advocates =
Commies
01/06/2005 12:07 AM
Xeni Jardin: I imagine my blog-mate Cory might have a few things to say about this when he's online again. :-) In an interview on news.com, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates described free culture advocates as a "modern-day sort of communists." Well now.
Q: "In recent years, there's been a lot of people clamoring to reform and restrict intellectual-property rights. It started out with just a few people, but now there are a bunch of advocates saying, 'We've got to look at patents, we've got to look at copyrights.' What's driving this, and do you think intellectual-property laws need to be reformed?

A: "No, I'd say that of the world's economies, there's more that believe in intellectual property today than ever. There are fewer communists in the world today than there were. There are some new modern-day sort of communists who want to get rid of the incentive for musicians and moviemakers and software makers under various guises. They don't think that those incentives should exist.

And this debate will always be there. I'd be the first to say that the patent system can always be tuned--including the U.S. patent system. There are some goals to cap some reform elements. But the idea that the United States has led in creating companies, creating jobs, because we've had the best intellectual-property system--there's no doubt about that in my mind, and when people say they want to be the most competitive economy, they've got to have the incentive system. Intellectual property is the incentive system for the products of the future."

Link (Thanks, Rick Prelinger, and Nathan Slaughter).

BB reader Matt Bradley said, "Obviously, what we need is a large red flag with a gold copyleft in the upper left, replacing the hammer and sickle."

That sounded like a fine idea, so I whipped up the icon you see here. Enjoy, comrades!
