Strangers in a strangeland

Strangers in a strangeland 12/14/2003 06:26 PM

I just ran across the Bullmoose Republican site, complete with multiple blogs. The strange thing about them is reading their four pillars, they don't sound like republicans at all. They don't sound like democrats either, though their stance makes them sound centrist to me. I suspect a party like this could gain a lot of support, but I doubt next November's choices have much in common with these folks.

AP - The gift card — often viewed as the little, plastic solution for keeping friends and family out of the return lines — doesn't always serve as the ideal present. Responding to consumers who don't want to buy themselves another sweater, or will take a pass on a fancy steak dinner, Internet businesses have sprung up allowing people to sell or swap unwanted gift cards.

Familiar Strangers and Bluetooth
Tracking

Familiar Strangers and Bluetooth
Tracking
05/12/2004 12:42 PM
Intel Research looks at tracking people you see all the time, but don't know, via Bluetooth: Mark Frauenfelder writes about Intel's Jabberwocky, which explores your relationship with other people, including what are called familiar strangers: people who you don't know, but recognize because you see them regularly. The first instantiation is a Bluetooth application that tracks the Bluetooth IDs it sees. The more frequently you see certain IDs, the more familiar the program marks them. When you're surrounded by actual strangers (or their strange Bluetooth devices), you'll see a different display than when you're near people you see often but don't know. Once and if everyone is carrying Bluetooth devices, perhaps you could use this tool as a way to avoid detection. Private detectives will have to learn to turn off Bluetooth features to avoid showing up as known parties. Trying to avoid colleagues at work? As the colored squares grow in intensity, you zip out a fire door....

Software Companies Realizing The
Benefits Of User Exchanges

Software Companies Realizing The
Benefits Of User Exchanges
06/10/2004 09:49 AM
Proprietary software companies are still experimenting with "open source-like" offerings to try to improve their own products. A few months back we wrote about the softwar e cooperative idea - which was basically open source software for companies that only members could share. Since it cost $30,000 to become a member it was more like open source with a $30,000 entrance fee. Meanwhile, many proprietary software companies have been doing quite well setting up "user exchanges" where their end users can trade modifications and add-ons to their software for free. The companies that do this have found it beneficial in many ways - since they get a core group of loyal users who are generating improvements on their software. However, many companies are apparently shying away from such exchanges, worried that (a) they'll detract from commercial add-on development or (b) it opens them up to legal liability if such a third party add-on causes problems. The companies that rely heavily on these exchanges (including IBM, Adobe and Macromedia) insist they've had no problems - and that the benefits have been well worth it. This is yet another case where some companies realize the value of something that's "free" when it's viewed as an input resource, rather than an end-product.
