If you've always wanted a
goofy looking alien head alarm clock that could wake with 50 seconds
of your favorite MP3, then the Japan Trust Technology corporation
would like to sell you this USB MP3 clock that "with favorite sound

power so you can take it on the road to annoy your neighbors through
thin hotel walls.

Tix LED Clock
03/29/2005 11:24 AM
The Tix LED Clock is a
somewhat classy (if you live in an adobe hut on an alien world),
LED-based clock that shows you the time in one of more than a million
different patterns. Each panel represents a digit of the time, wherein
the number of lighted squares is the respective value for that panel.
(It's 12:34 in the above example.) Still, you don't need to tell
anyone else that, allowing your friends to believe you're far more
intelligent than they are. It can be your secret code-clock! It's only
$60 and definitely easier to read than the binary clocks on
ThinkGeek.

This probably
pleases me more than it should, but what can I say? I have a soft spot
for gadgets that think like I do. The Muller and van Dongen Word Clock
is a simple bar that eschews traditional digital or analog conventions
by telling time entirely through text. Instead of "12:00" you'd get
"Noon," or instead of "3:32" you'd get "about half-past three." It's a
pleasing way to take out the intermediate step between the cold, hard
numbers and the way most of us actually perceive time.
And as one of FunFurde's commenters points out, Mac OSX users can
add a similar function to their menu bar using "FuzzyClock."

Alarm clock that hides
Alarm clock that hides
03/29/2005 08:54 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Clocky is an alarm clock that hides when you hit its snooze button. It
was developed by Gauri Nanda at the MIT Media Lab. From the project
description:
When the alarm clock
goes off and the snooze button is pressed, Clocky will roll off the
bedside table and wheel away, bumping mindlessly into objects on the
floor until it eventually finds a spot to rest. Minutes later, when
the alarm sounds again, the sleeper must get up out of bed and search
for Clocky. This ensures that the person is fully awake before turning
it off. Small wheels that are concealed by Clocky's shag enable it to
move and reposition itself, and an internal processor helps it find a
new hiding spot every day.
I don't like being told when to wake up but I've come to terms with
the idea that I have to. In designing Clocky, I was in part inspired
by kittens I've had that would bite my toes every morning.

Would You Want To Buy Longhorn Now?
12/02/2003 12:13 AMIt's no secret that plenty of bootleg software shows up in various
marketplaces in Asia. Thus, while I'm not at all surprised to hear
that Malaysian street vendors are apparently
selling bootleg
copies of Microsoft's Longhorn OS, I have to wonder who would buy
such a thing? Microsoft, of course, isn't known for getting things
right on the first shot, but this isn't even the first release of
Longhorn, but something that is so far in pre-release mode that I'd be
surprised if it really works at all. Longhorn isn't expected to hit
the market for a couple of years (note the plural), so I imagine
anyone who actually spends money on it at this point is getting
something that isn't anywhere near ready for prime time use.

made some int
eresting observations regarding Microsoft's recent decision to release certain
Longhorn technologies (mainly Avalon, the new UI framework) for
Windows XP.
My prediction is that Avalon v1 will be a throw-away: it
is not really the foundation on which you will build applications: V2
will likely not be backwards compatible, they will have to
re-architect bits of it: which means that people will end up with two
frameworks running side-by-side: Avalon V1 and Avalon V2.
Dave Winer also chimes
in with regards to the fact that this probably increases the
workload for the Avalon team, and could put things into a death march.
When you ask a Microsoft person to say what Longhorn is

product with a purpose has a two-sentence description that gets
everyone so excited they can't wait. Longhorn isn't designed to solve

been talking about this as the centerpiece of the release.
Advanced search features that Gates has termed the "Holy Grail" of
Longhorn, the next major version of Windows, won't be fully in place
until 2009, Bob Muglia, the senior vice president in charge of Windows
server development, told CNET News.com.
The technology, called WinFS, is an add-on the Windows file system
that Microsoft says will make it easier for users to find data such as
documents, e-mail messages and multimedia files — no matter what
their format — on local PCs and across the network.
