Custom Car Emblems

Custom Car Emblems 06/05/2005 11:46 PM

Just the thing for pimping your own ride (or your bike, your computer, etc...); a set of made-to-order emblems for the trunk lid, or fender, or whatever.

It looks like an assortment of premade chrome alphanumeric characters, but the price isn't bad; $3.50 each, and $3.99 for special characters (heart, ampersand, at symbol), or $1 for a period.

On Custom Schemas

On Custom Schemas 06/18/2004 12:22 AM
Not so long ago, I wrote a piece about open document formats. Just today there was an interesting (as always) follow- up from Jon Udell, but what I wanted to address here is Dare Obasanjo’s take, which is pretty well the Microsoft party line (not that Dare’s always a party-line guy): the Office software and its document formats are winners because they allow the use of custom schemas for office documents. That’s more important, they say, than the dodgy licensing terms and the missing pieces. I used to believe that custom schemas for office documents were generally a good idea, but I no longer do. Here’s why...

David Pescovitz: LambA couple months ago, I posted about the Minnesota Association of Rogue Taxidermists. One of the members, Sarina Brewer, is a taxidermy artist with a wonderful sense of the curious and surreal. Her exquisitely executed "gaffs" (fakes) range from various siamese siblings to winged cats to enchanting renderings of the classic Feejee Mermaid. And her prices are quite reasonable. From Sarina's bio:
Her lifelong obsession with biology often focused on genetic mutations. Study of these deviations of nature eventually led to the the discovery of circus sideshows and "freaks." This influence, as well as a slightly warped sense of humor, manifest themselves in her strange cryptozoological creations and each peculiar artifact she creates. Now incorporating her past formal art education with her passion for biology and the bizarre, you are invited to peruse the culmination of nearly three decades of the study of art and the natural sciences in her eccentric works.

More About Custom DTDs

More About Custom DTDs 06/05/2005 11:24 PM
Your web page uses non-standard elements, so, following the advice of earlier ALA articles, you bang out a custom DTD to make sure your document still validates. Not so fast, says the W3C's Quality Assurance team, who argue that crafting a custom DTD for the sole purpose of validation is a mistake ... and then tell when it is the right thing to do. By the way, we are pleased to have the W3C QA team as ALA authors, and look forward to more.

Validating a Custom DTD

Validating a Custom DTD 02/01/2005 09:28 PM
In his article in this issue, Peter-Paul Koch proposes adding custom attributes to form elements to allow triggers for specialized behaviors. The W3C validator won't validate a document with these attributes, as they aren't part of the XHTML specification. Not to worry! This article will show you how to create a custom DTD that will add those custom attributes, and will also show you how to validate documents that use those new attributes.

Custom SiteSearchers

Custom SiteSearchers 07/14/2002 01:19 PM
Anil Dash writes in to let us know that Sun's Java Search has a customized interface to Google. They join Cisco, Redhat, BBCi, the Apple Developer Connection and Earthlink in taking advantage of Google's hosted SiteSearch program. Also, Yahoo!, Alexa (which has some very nifty screenshots and collaborative filtering) and Netscape use Custom WebSearch to provide customized views of Google searches. According to Google, the results "are available via HTTP and can be formatted in XML or Google's proprietary protocol." So I suspect the server simply makes a call to Google's XML feed and reformats the results. This is an interesting alternative to simply handing users off to the Google site. In other news, thanks to a note from mpt, I've added a link to Google SiteSearch for this site so you can search just the Google Weblog....

Evolve Custom Controls in ASP.NET

Evolve Custom Controls in ASP.NET 12/17/2003 12:18 AM
ASP.NET's support for Web controls provides an excellent way to package up commonly used behaviors and deploy them to other developers. But when should you build a control, and when should you just add the behavior to a Web form directly? This article examines this issue, and steps through the evolution of a control from behavior on a Web form to full-fledged control.

Building Custom PHP Extensions

Building Custom PHP Extensions 12/08/2003 07:15 PM
This is a valuable book that addresses an important need that many PHP developers have when it comes to how to take the most of PHP applications developing new extensions. Since it covers also the development of extensions on Windows, the author has demonstrated that he is well aware that despite PHP is an Open Source project, the PHP developers are not interested just on Unix/Linux. This way he made this book very complete and very useful to all of those that would like to build new PHP extensions and make PHP an even better language than it is today.

gba_kzone.jpg imageJust because I'm a sucker for customized Game Boy Advances (even if it's just a sticker), I thought I'd pass along this competition to win one of five Rip Curl GBA SPs on this Australian kid's site, K-Zone. Presumably, you have to be a kid to win, and probably an Ozlander, as well, but let me give you a little tip: I've never met any contest coordinator that wouldn't do whatever it took to get a full-grown man in a Sailor Moon outfit to leave. Just saying. (Thanks, Brad!)

Developing Custom PHP Extensions

Developing Custom PHP Extensions 03/11/2003 01:22 AM
Well i'm pleased to say that i've just learned to write my first PHP extension, thanks to the above link. It accepts parameters, does some processing and spits out the results. The latest php manual has an extensive Extending PHP section which is pretty good.

I've never had the time to learn how to write PHP extensions before this. The only free time i have to learn this is at home, where i don't have a Linux box, but i do have VC++. It's really really painful because i haven't coded in C for about 2 years, but you don't forget your roots.

I've been saying for years that we can port ADOdb to C if we really need the speed. Now i can do it, if we are all willing to endure constant bugs for a couple of months. Might even drive me crazy, C is no longer easy for me (err, when was it ever easy...).

Now that i'm in the mood, how do i write a cross-platform extension?

Build Your Own Custom Web Browser

Build Your Own Custom Web Browser 08/05/2004 03:28 AM
One Web browser feature that is growing in popularity is the ability to open different tabs, or sub-pages, within the same browser window. Using tabs to separate multiple pages keeps the desktop tidy, while browsing multiple sites. Several third party Web browsers offer this facility on Windows and other platforms, and if you're like me, you'll find it an addictive way to surf. Many browsers, either by default or through plug-ins, also provide a quick way to perform Web searches without having to go directly to a search engine. Wouldn't it be great to be able to write your own browser that could do all this, and also be able to fine-tune it and adjust it to exactly suit your needs?

CSS Design: Custom Underlines 02/10/2004 02:35 AM
While web designers generally have a great deal of control over how a document should be presented, basic CSS doesn't provide many options for the style of underlines below the links on a page. But with a few nips and tucks, you can take back creative control of the way your links look. Frequent ALA contributor Stuart Robertson shows how.

Create Your Own Custom Car Emblems

Create Your Own Custom Car Emblems 06/17/2005 03:58 PM

I always wondered where cars got those special emblems you never saw on the average body of the same make and model. Weird abbreviations like S2AF, or shiny badges that proclaimed “6 Speed” when maybe the car was actually an automatic? Today I found the website that not only sells a ton of popular pre-made car emblems for less than $20, but you can also customize your own set online. If anyone wants to order…
