The Next Big Web Thing - Really

The Next Big Web Thing - Really 03/13/2003 10:22 AM
What happened to Web services? Well, they're out there, being developed by Microsoft and Sun employees as well as folks working on other platforms. But, thankfully, what keeps showing up on the radar is not the position papers produced by vendors' marketing departments, but rather the quiet, diligent work of the W3C, which will have the last laugh, in my humble opinion.

Macworld,” writes Dan Dubno for CBS News. “After a week in Las Vegas, at the Consumer Electronics Show, I had seen all there was to see...Yet something was missing at CES, and a week later, at Macworld in San Francisco, we found it: the new Mac Mini and the iPod Shuffle.” [Jan 27, 2005]

If It's Not One Thing...

If It's Not One Thing... 06/06/2005 12:15 AM

I've been gone for a while ... and for too many reasons to count, but I'll try.

  1. Family problems months ago that are ongoing
  2. Preparation at work for some changes
  3. New car, and the financial wrangling that made it happen
  4. Possible new work in the future
  5. Built foundation of that possible new work
  6. Upgraded Mac Geekery and codepoetry to Drupal 4.6 (on the same install, no less)
  7. Worked so hard, slept so little, immune system went down enough I picked up shingles – yay me

So, while I'm doing my best not to scratch everywhere, I'm looking at the tech news as of late and realizing that there is absolutely nothing interesting going on until the 29th. Sure, sure, Adobe is trying harder to be the Microsoft of the media applications market, and succeeding, and other little fun things going around and around, but overall it's just your average monkey business.

But, damn, did you see Apple's stock price? Down $10 in just a few days for no real reason. Well, the whole market went to crap along with it (the Dow dropped over 500 points) so it's not like a bias or anything but ... wow.

Anyway. I'll have a long biting insight ready just as soon as the hydrocodone wears off... -scratch- -scratch-

But I can tell that it’s about the
same thing

One of the common feature requests we get for NetNewsWire is to handle this situation:

Say you’re subscribed to several Mac news feeds. Then one day Microsoft updates Office for Macintosh, and each feed includes a news item about it, so you have several news items about it.

You only need to read that particular piece of news once. So why not make it so NetNewsWire detects that these are all about the same thing, and mark them as read automatically once you read the first one?

Here’s why:

Consider these two news items, ripped from today’s headlines...

MacMinute

Title: Microsoft Office 2004 update released
Description: Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit (Mac BU) has posted Office 2004 for Mac Update 11.1.1, which includes improvements to Excel add-in calculation, increased PowerPoint and Word 2004 stability, additional support for device drivers and enhanced appearance of imported graphics...
Link: http://www.macminute.com/2005/03/07/office-2004/

MacCentral

Title: Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac updated to 11.1.1
Description: Microsoft Corp.'s Mac Business Unit (Mac BU) on Monday announced the release of Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Update 11.1.1. The update includes improvements to Excel add-in calculation, improves stability for PowerPoint and Word, adds support for new device drivers and improves the appearance of imported graphics.
Link: http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/03/07/office/index.php?lsrc=mcrss-03 05

They’re about the same thing

Both items are obviously about the same thing. You can tell by looking, instantly, no thought required.

But computers aren’t that smart. How does a piece of software know that these two are about the same thing?

The titles, descriptions, and links are different.

There are many of the same words—but you really don’t want your aggregator to start making guesses here. Imagine two completely different stories, but each one has “Apple iTunes” in the title. “Songs on Apple iTunes Music Store now free” and “Apple iTunes sold to SixApart” are not the same piece of news.

What’s the solution?

Artificial intelligence would be helpful here. But we don’t have that.

One possibility would be a new kind of link element—an external link element that is meant to identify the source of the story. For instance, if you go to the full version of the above example news items, both of the stories include a link to the same page on the Microsoft site, a page about this update to Office.

Were that link to be included in the feed, with that item, as a special link-to-the-source link, then an aggregator could know that the news items were really about the same thing.

One nice thing about this is that it’s likely that the folks at MacMinute and MacCentral would pick the same link. They wouldn’t have to coordinate, it would just work. (At least in this example. It wouldn’t always be so clear-cut.)

The bad thing about this idea is the potential for abuse—or just plain laziness. What if people make the link-to-the-source link just a link to http://apple.com/ for any story about Apple—you’d end up with stories that are not about the same thing being marked as read. Nuts.

Another problem is that you still might miss something interesting. Say MacX posted a basic news report, but MacY posted a lengthy piece with interviews and and all kinds of goodies. You wouldn’t want to miss MacY’s report—but you would, since it was marked as read when you read MacX’s news item.

In other words, I don’t know what the solution is, but it’s worth thinking about.

The best thing about identities - is
that there are so many of them

The best thing about identities - is
that there are so many of them
12/31/2004 10:59 AM

We used to use that line when we referred to standards.

Wi shing that the world would coalesce around a single standard:

a) ignores the fact that there is Microsoft. So choose your category wisely and stay under the radar, as Microsoft - no matter what - will come up with their own thing. In the case of subscription formats - they actually PRECEDED RSS with something called CDF. But since it failed, that gave Dave Winer an opportunity of getting RSS going "user the radar" until it was too late for Microsoft to stop him.

b) assuming that there will ever be a single digital identity standard - is wrong. Kim Cameron raps out his beliefs - which he calls "The Fifth Law of Identity". I totally agree with Kim that a meta-identity format is needed to brdge and connect together all of these disparate systems.

c) is rather naive and clearly sees the digital identity space as one thing. It's not. What digital identity is to the FOAF nerds or Tantek Celik's XFN cult is completely different than how the i-names folks or Sxip Network sees it. And I haven't even brought up the enterprise wonks - lile PingID. Or the god head Craig Burton or his nemisis Kim Cameron. We all see this space as something completely different.

So - by definition - we (at best) can at least hope for some sort of meta-standard.

God bless the meta-directory gods.

UPDATE: Craig Burton raps it our succinctly - like only he can.

The law of pluralism is contrary to the laws of customer control. Let's be clear, the law of pluralism requires operating system independence--by definition. This means the Microsoft Identity Archtiect is calling for a system that is not necissarily Windows centric by design. This--of course--is the only way such a system can really work--but consider the implications.

A cross platfrom identity metasystem sun-spot hot and--with the other laws being discussed here--changes everything.

My favorite song from Johnny Cash's last cover songs disc was definitely Desperado. And now, a flash artist/fan has made a video for it that is loaded with monkeys. I didn't think there was any way to improve on the song, but throwing a few chimps on horses just proved me wrong. This is even better than the song alone. [via vidiot]

I have about a dozen e-mail accounts spread all over the net but I keep a printout in our safety deposit box along with many other things a print-out of all of my login names and passwords in a sealed envelope.

But not everyone has pre-planned for something bad happening to them. A Marine who was unfortunately killed in action in Iraq has a Yahoo e-mail account that the family is trying to secure before the account expires. Yahoo has refused to give the account password to the family.

E-mail accounts could contain information that the family would cherish but it also could contain information that would leave a bad taste in their mouth. I think Yahoo should give in to the families wishes, but I would hope with enough public pressure they would turn the account over. [CNN]

Kelly Clarkson, the first American Idol winner, has a breakout hit called "Since U Been Gone" that you've probably heard. It's totally addictive and I think may just be this year's Hey Ya. Even my indie rock friends all adore the track (even Mike Doughty of Soul Coughing fame puts it in his top three favorites).

So when word got out that indie rock legend Ted Leo covered it, we searched and searched and a bounty was even offered. Eventually, it was found, at UGO.com. Worlds colliding!

I ripped the audio from the streaming video file on their site and here's the song: Ted Leo doing a cover of "Since U Been Gone" (192kbps, MP3)

It was worth the search and the wait.
