The Peace Parks Foundation is an international, neutral body that coordinates the creation of "Peace Parks" -- a more foundation friendly name for "Transfrontier Conservation Areas." Peace Parks are defined as "relatively large protected areas, which straddle international frontiers between two or more countries and cover large-scale natural systems encompassing one or more protected areas."

Executive Vice-Chairman Willem van Riet of South Africa, in San Diego, California, this month to receive the Preside ntial Award from GIS software giant ESRI, is that Peace Parks remove the fences of international frontiers -- the "scars of history" -- to let elephants resume their natural migratory paths. An early success of this idea was profiled in full and stunning color by the National Geographic in 2001.

Nuclear Elephant shows how P2P = sales 08/12/2004 04:36 PM
BB pal Todd Lappin sez: Here's a website for folks to register purchases they made after downloading free stuff online, to track the extent to which free downloads translate into later sales:

To wit:

"It has always been my belief that various industries have actually earned more revenue as a direct result of file sharing, and that file sharing works FOR the industry. Recent figures such as the music industry's latest earnings report have shown results contrary to what the RIAA has consistently complained about in that file sharing hurts the industry. So if you would like to contribute, click submit above. Post your merchandise, how much you paid, and why you wouldn't have bought it if you first hadn't downloaded something. No IP addresses or personal information is logged - so there's nothing to subpoena. The complete (growing) catalog is available for review by clicking here. The totals shown below are only temporary, and may be reduced later once the logs are crunched through a filter (to detect bogus entries or flooding), or as users help identify suspect or bogus entries."

Look ma, I'm blind

Look ma, I'm blind 04/14/2005 06:22 AM
So, this one country invades this other country saying that now its inhabitants can be free and the women are no longer oppressed, killing many people in the process of distributing freedom. However, at the same time they pret end that their own women have no nipples and punish those women who dare to have them. Even with clothes on.

They are more alike than they want to admit.

María Jesús San Segundo, Spanish Secretary of Education and Science, and Carlos Rubén Fernández, President of ONCE foundation, awarded the prize to the scientists at the historical Complutense University auditorium in Madrid. Georg Boomgaarden, German Ambassador to Spain, also participated in the festive award ceremony.

The displays use metallic films featuring various shape memory alloys which are produced layer by layer on silicon wafers using thin film technology. Display pixels are generated when the metallic film adjusts its curvature partially, similarly to bimetal snap plates for temperature switches. The movement of the films is then transferred to the touch panel via plastic pins und thus can be detected by the user.

Animated "Blind Man's Penis"

Animated "Blind Man's Penis" 05/06/2004 10:24 AM
Jo hn Alderman says:
"Back in the '70s, John Trubee (weirdo prankster) saw one of those ads that offers to assess your poetic talent and set your poems to music. So--testing limits--he wrote the most offensive thing he could think of, pushing all the buttons, and sent it off. The refrain was originally 'Stevie Wonder’s penis, is erect because he's blind.' The company wrote back and, of course, told him he had talent, and would set his song to music and press disks if he'd pay them a little. But, because they didn't want to get sued, they had to substitute 'a blind man' for Stevie. The record was pressed and it became a sort-of underground hit in LA. Funny also because Trubee's prank calls were supposed to be the inspiration for Matt Groening's use of them. They were friends!"
Now, "Blind Man's Penis" has been given the Flash animation treatment! Link

Race blind society? I wish

Race blind society? I wish 12/21/2003 02:41 AM
Every study of the job market or the housing market I have ever seen confirms the existence of persistent and blatant discrimination against African-Americans. This latest study by the Discrimination Research Center is no different, unfortunately. Temporary employment agencies in California show significant preference for white applicants by 3-1 over African Americans In undercover tests conducted by the Discrimination Research Center (DRC). By ratios of 4-1 in Los Angeles and more than 2-1 in San Francisco, agencies favored white job applicants over slightly higher qualified African American applicants. "African Americans seeking temporary work received less consideration in the form of fewer offers and less desirable jobs," said John Trasviña, Director of the DRC. The results come from 64 tests of San Francisco and Los Angeles temporary employment agencies conducted between May and November, 2003 involving specially matched pairs of white and African American job applicants. Where is the outrage among the so-called principled "race-blind" conservatives? Via Magpie....
