07/13/2004 11:48 PMYou have always been told to use the Windows shutdown process when
turning off your PC and to make sure that you do not get magnets too
close or you might erase data from your hard drive. What do all of
these have in common? They are all myths. PC Mag did a nice job of
myth busting in their latest article.
The six myths of IT
The six myths of IT
08/13/2004 06:17 PMTime to face reality. Some of our bedrock assumptions turn out to be
unfounded. And chief technologists can be subject to outdated beliefs
as often as any professional. With that in mind, we addressed six
common IT myths and deconstructed them to give managers a clear view
of some important assumptions that might otherwise throw a monkey
wrench into their technology plans.

Five myths about 'Wronghorn'
11/17/2003 12:48 PMAt its annual developer conference in Los Angeles, Microsoft made a
lot of noise about the upcoming release of Longhorn, the next re-haul
of the Windows operating system. Longhorn won't be available until
2006, assuming there are no more slips in the release date (it has
already been delayed three times).
Microsoft served up another dose of rhetoric that inevitably
encourages locking developers and customers into Microsoft products.
As far as I can tell, Longhorn is yet another Windows wolf dressed up
in sheep's clothing.

Top ten myths about gurus
04/06/2005 12:35 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Over at
Guruphiliac, Jody Radzik outlines the top ten myths about your
guru... any guru. Here are a couple:
10. Guruji knows what's best for you
While we acknowledge the possibility that a real true guru could know
what's best for you, s/he'd also know it's best to let you decide for
yourself. Gurus who pretend to know what's best for all their devotees
are fooling themselves as much as they are their disciples...
4. Guruji has no desires
This is based in the most pervasive of the occluding expectations,
that desire somehow prevents self-realization. Desire is merely the
way the body responds to conditions. The guru may (or may not) be over
sex, but when they want a Twinkie, they go get a Twinkie.

The Myths of Children
The Myths of Children
11/13/2003 05:22 AMThe homeless children of Miami have developed an interesting and
amazing belief system, which brings them hope and the ability to
understand the world and the circumstances they exist in. This story,
as written by Lynda Edwards for the Miami New Times gives an
insightful and at times, beautiful look into the folklore and tales of
the children. "To homeless children sleeping on the street, neon is
as comforting as a night-light. Angels love colored light too. After
nightfall in downtown Miami, they nibble on the NationsBank building
-- always drenched in a green, pink, or golden glow. "They eat light
so they can fly," eight-year-old Andre tells the children sitting on
the patio of the Salvation Army's emergency shelter on NW 38th Street.
Andre explains that the angels hide in the building while they study
battle maps. "There's a lot of killing going on in Miami," he says.
"You want to fight, want to learn how to live, you got to learn the
secret stories." The small group listens intently to these tales told
by homeless children in shelters. "

Drexler says no to "grey goo" myths
Drexler says no to "grey goo" myths
06/14/2004 11:40 AMNanotechnology pioneer
Eric Drexler has
co-authored a paper in a scientific journal addressing fears
surrounding self-replicating nano-machines. The paper, co-written by
Chris Phoenix of the
Center for
Responsible Nanotechnology, was published in the journal
Nanotechnology last week. From the abstract:
"In the light of controversy regarding scenarios based on
runaway replication (so-called 'grey goo'), a review of current
thinking regarding nanotechnology-based manufacturing is in order.
Nanotechnology-based fabrication can be thoroughly non-biological and
inherently safe: such systems need have no ability to move about, use
natural resources, or undergo incremental mutation. Moreover,
self-replication is unnecessary: the development and use of highly
productive systems of nanomachinery (nanofactories) need not involve
the construction of autonomous self-replicating nanomachines.
Accordingly, the construction of anything resembling a dangerous
self-replicating nanomachine can and should be prohibited. Although
advanced nanotechnologies could (with great difficulty and little
incentive) be used to build such devices, other concerns present
greater problems. Since weapon systems will be both easier to build
and more likely to draw investment, the potential for dangerous
systems is best considered in the context of military competition and
arms control." Link
