Timbuktu Pro 8.0 Finally Adds Encryption

Timbuktu Pro 8.0 Finally Adds Encryption 03/14/2005 06:09 PM
Glenn Fleishman (~200 words)

Timbuktu Pro 8.0 Finally Adds Encryption -- I'm not a nervous nelly, but it's always bothered me that my Timbuktu Pro connections are being sent in the clear when I'm not using a virtual private network (VPN) connection. Finally, Timbuktu Pro 8, released last week, includes standard SSH (Secure Shell) support and even uses its built-in compression to enhance speed. SSH uses public-key encryption to exchange a one-time session key. As long as you know that the public key is valid - which needs to be established by what are called "out-of-band" methods of confirming a certificate's identity - then you have something close to absolute assurance that no one can (currently) snoop your session.

Next Generation Webcam Looks You In The
Eye
06/30/2004 04:31 AM
Just in case you might have been put off by webcams that showed people staring off at a weird angles, you can now be totally weirded out by a webcam system that compensates so that the foreground person is always looking you in the eye. A setup of two webcams transforms the video images to a 3D image map that re-creates an accurate angle-manipulated video. Microsoft's research lab and i2i have been developing the technology for a while, so it could be released for video chat sessions in the not too distant future. And if you're worried about what your background looks like (eg. your messy room/office), a suitably-chosen image can replace your actual surroundings. Perhaps the Jetsons should be cited as prior art for some of the features.

The return of the webcam

The return of the webcam 03/14/2005 04:25 PM

Through a series of miracles yesterday, I stumbled across something I've been searching for forever: an OS X driver (plus a fix for OS X 10.3) for my old USB QuickCam. (I also found an add-on that lets me use said USB cam with iChat AV. Whee!) I then downloaded a program called EvoCam, and just like that, the webcam is back up (view in popup). (No guarantees as to how long it will stay up.)

How's that for a bit of nostalgia? Back in the early days of weblogs, a lot of folks had webcams...it was part of the package. Posts, a list of links to your friends' sites, a webcam, link to your Amazon wishlist, maybe a link to your Epinions page, an about page, a guestbook or little chat widget in the sidebar, etc. It was a social space to move around in. Now that everyone is reading everything in RSS readers, a lot of that sort of thing has been lost. RSS readers are not that social, even with so-called "next gen" newsreaders that recommend sites based on what you already read. It's mostly just information in, information out...little time or opportunity for play. Thank God for sites like Flickr, LiveJournal, and Fark, where people can still go to hang out and play around with the web and their friends a bit.

toms_webcams.jpg imageI don't use webcams, because I am ugly. But once upon a time, I was a pretty princess of a man, and had a pretty good time playing around with basic video chat and periodic Brady Bunch groups of pictures on webpages. And while I think it's sort of the received wisdom that all webcams suck equally, Tom's Hardware took it upon themselves to see if that was really the case. The result? Not only can you pay up to $200 for a simple webcam, it seems the more you pay, the better the quality. Amazing!

Intel Presents the Pig and Cow Webcam

Intel Presents the Pig and Cow Webcam 05/20/2004 08:17 PM
A pig, a cow, a camera, some coffee--and thievery: There's got to be a category that's uniquely unique, as much as an oxymoron as that might sound. Nigel Ballard sends the following combination police blotter, glimpse in the future, and Wi-Fi report from Portland, where he helps build out community wireless networking hotspots as part of Personal Telco: I'm on a new steering committee! This'll make it three in total. The Pig & Cow Steering Committee differs from the others, not only because it has a way more interesting title, but also because there are livestock involved, albeit the plastic variety. Confused? OK, some background is needed. Urban Grind is a coffee house with a difference, home to Personal Telco and a whole host of other community-related happenings. You need to hang there to see how very different it is from the sterility encountered in those national coffee houses. A few months back two plastic animals appeared on the countertop. Namely, a pig and a cow. People waiting for their drinks started posing the animals, and then customers slipped in extra characters and even props to create scenes ranging from the beautiful to the bizarre. Along comes Intel's People & Practices Research Group who have been watching the way the free Wi-Fi access from Oregon non-profit Personal Telco was changing the clientele, attracting customers from miles away, and creating a real sense of community, communication and interaction in this large and comfortable space. Many of the customers at UG actually talk to each other; they learn each others names, enquire about lives, loves and job searches, amazing! Intel asked Urban Grind if they could install some fun technology, Brenda and Macker, the proprietors said "Sure, knock yourself out". Intel duly installs a camera, an LCD monitor, a big blue button, a tiny web server and a wireless client to connect their server through the Personal Telco Wi-Fi to the outside world. The idea is this. You are invited to pose the characters, bring in some of your own, and even add a prop. Hit the big blue button, the image appears on the LCD monitor and shortly thereafter they also appear online at the web site for all to see. Cool beans, but "why" I hear you ask. Intel says "We'd like to help people get marginally more enjoyment out of Urban Grind, or get to know other patrons a...

Specifically, as reviewed by I4U, a little Mexican get-up complete with sombrero.

This is it, folks. We have seen the future, and it is tiny sombreros for consumer electronics. I could not be more proud of the electronics industry than I am today. I am seriously misting a little here.
