Is Time Travel Is Possible?
Is Time Travel Is Possible?
03/15/2003 04:00 PMThere was that
guy who
was supposedly going to have 3rd August 2002 tatooed on his forearm
instructing him to come back in time to the Empire State Building on
that date should he ever gain access to time travel in his lifetime.
Whatever.
What about putting a line in your will and
testament to the effect that you will legally force your children to
pledge that they will come back in time to meet you should they gain
access to time travel in their lifetimes, and they in turn must too
must force their children to make the same pledge and so on all the
way down your entire line of descendants. Surely by making that pledge
today you
should be able to make time travel happen. If it is
at all possible.
Wow, wait a minute......someone who looks
a little like me dressed in an outfit made out of what looks like
silver foil type fabric just appeared in my room. Wait...what?....you
mean you're my
great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grea
t grandson and you've come back to show me all about time travel? Wow!
I just had a quick trip forwards in time to August this year and I
blogged it!
Cool.

Hits of backwards masking
Hits of backwards masking
03/25/2005 11:22 AMDavid Pescovitz:
An
article
this week in the Salt Lake Tribune about backwards masking in rock
music linked to Jeff Millner's classic "Stairway to Heaven: Backwards"
site. Jeff has added a few more recent tunes to the satanic jukebox of
sin, including Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time":
Play forward: "With you I lose my mind give me a
si..."
Reverse play: "Sleep with me, I'm not too young."
and the devious "Pokemon Rap":
Play forward: "Gotta catch 'em all, gotta catch 'em all
(yo), Gotta catch 'em all, gotta catch 'em all (yeah)"
Reverse play: "I love satan, I love satan. I love satan, I love
satan."
My all-time favorite though is Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust."
As kids, MTV.com writer
Gil Kaufman and I played the song backwards for my
dad to prove that the rumors were true about a hidden suggestion to
"smoke marijuana." My dad shrugged and said he thought is sounded more
like "go to California."

Why are sort indicators backwards?
Why are sort indicators backwards?
08/27/2004 05:29 PMHere’s something I don’t understand: why are sort indicators in OS
X backwards? Consider this screen shot:

The column is sorted alphabetically, from A down to Z, yet the sort
indicator arrow points up instead of down. I would expect it to
indicate the direction of the sort, but it indicates the
opposite of the sort direction. (Or so it seems to me.)
I’m sure there’s an explanation. But what is it?
The backwards music business
The backwards music business
03/14/2005 06:11 PMAccording to a story in today's Financial Times, music companies are upset
because, get this, customers are flocking to buy legal digital
downloads.
For several years, the record companies have complained about
unauthorized peer-to-peer file sharing. Now, they are finally
generating significant revenues from users paying to receive their
songs over the Net. And the labels' response is to complain that
prices must be set too low. There were other, higher-priced digital
download services around before Apple made 99 cents the standard price
on iTunes, and they failed to catch on. That seems to suggest the
current prices are in the sweet spot of the market, stimulating demand
and luring users away from P2P downloads. The record companies seem
to think otherwise.
In most businesses, news that customers are buying your products in
droves would be met with jubilation. But in an industry used to
controlling distribution chains and prices through rigid oligopolistic
practices, that scenario is met with fear. Of course, if prices for
legal digital downloads go up, illegal digital downloads start to look
more attractive again. The labels may be about to cut off their noses
to spite their faces.

Is XM Bending Over Backwards To Make
Satellite Radio Less Useful?
08/30/2004 01:37 PMLast week, we wrote about how XM Radio and the RIAA were getting
increasingly concerned about someone who dared to make some software
that would
recor
d XM radio feeds. According to people at Broadband Reports, XM
has become so upset about this that they have
pulled their PC
receiver from the market while they look for a solution to this
"problem." It's quite a world when it's considered a problem that
someone has made your service
more useful. The note at
Broadband Reports also claims that XM is considering removing USB
ports from future equipment for the same reason. Both of these seem
unconfirmed at the moment, so it would be nice if there were some real
confirmation on either rumor. However, the satellite radio business
is in a tough position. For all the success they've been claiming in
signing up customers, they're nowhere near profitability. Their
capital costs are incredibly high, and the thing they need, more than
anything else, is more subscribers. Shutting down tools that make
their offering more compelling just means they're making their job
that much more difficult. Hopefully, it's not true, and this is just
a baseless rumor, perhaps caused by the product being out of stock.

Diller To Show IAC Is No Travel Company

Diller To Show IAC Is No Travel Company
By Creating IAC's Travel Company
12/22/2004 01:16 AMBarry Diller has done a good job buying up various online "middleman"
companies in a variety of spaces from travel to social networking to
dating. However, he says too many people view InterActiveCorp as a
travel company and that's making it more difficult to acquire
non-travel companies. So, in order to
prove that he's not
running a travel company...
he's
going to show them what it means to really run a travel
company. That is, he's going to spin off all of IAC's travel
properties, including Expedia, Hotwire, TravelNow and Hotels.com, into
one company (which he'll still run), and keep all the other properties
as IAC. While it may be a good idea to realize the value of those
other properties, from the beginning Diller kept talking about the
synergies of having all of these properties under the same umbrella.
Apparently, those synergies only go so far when the stock price isn't
as high as he had hoped.

Roxio Gets It Backwards - Giving Away
Music Players To Napster Users
06/16/2004 10:45 PMSteve Jobs has admitted in the past that Apple isn't looking to make
money off of iTunes. Instead, they view
iTunes
as a loss leader for selling more iPods - where they make their
real margin. So, it's a bit surprising that Roxio appears to be going
in the other direction. They're now
giving away an MP3
player to anyone who signs up for one year of Napster. Of course,
it's a cheap MP3 player with only 128 megs of storage, but the concept
is still the same.

07/20/2004 12:54 PMSmall Town Software announced on Tuesday the release of
Time and
Budgets, a new application that integrates with Apple's iCal
application to supply time and budgeting functions for projects. The
software also works with any calendar program that supports WebDAV
(Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning), which means .Mac
subscribers can use iCal with the online service to seamlessly input
data and generate reports that convert time into dollars and cents
that can be compared against a project's budget. Available reports in
Time and Budgets include time sheets with visual charts, details about
time logged in specific phases and tasks, aggregate workgroup feedback
and more. Another option can generate e-mail alerts when projects have
