Kids Only Domain Takes Three Years To
Get 21 Sites
06/05/2005 11:57 PM
More than three years ago, when US politicians set up the "kids-only" domain of .kids.us, we wondered how many sites would actually bother with it, noting the "chicken and egg" problem the domain faced. We now have an answer. Three years into the experiment, there are a grand total of 21 sites hosted in the special .kids.us domain. Yes: twenty one. A thriving community. It probably doesn't help that to host there you have to pay about $400 a year for registration and "content review" vs. $7 or so to register a .com. Somehow, we're confident that .xxx won't face the same problem.

Kids online 06/17/2005 04:53 PM

Today, I set up a new computer for the kids. I took the new 2.8Ghz Celeron box that had been serving as my Linux file-server and swapped it with the old 450Mhz P3 box that the kids were using. I was a little surprised how easy it was to make the switch. I just took the hard-drive out of the Celeron and put it in the P3 and Linux came right back up.

I set up Windows XP Home on the Celeron box and installed the important software (Warcraft and SimCity 3000) for the kids. I would have preferred something other than Windows, but we have quite an investment in games and educational software for Windows.

I also added a wireless adapter. So now, for the first time, the kids computer is on-line. I didn't setup any parental controls or filtering software and I'm not really sure what to do about "internet safety." The boys are 7 and 8 and I'm pretty sure they aren't going to go looking for trouble quite yet, but I am a little worried that Google will send them to a site of ill-repute or some horrible porn-spam message will land in their inbox. If you've got kids around that age on-line, I'd love to hear what you do to protect them from porn-spam and other internet threats.

Easy For Kids To Buy Alcohol Online

Easy For Kids To Buy Alcohol Online 06/09/2004 01:16 AM
For years, one of the worries about offering wine and other alcohol online for sale was that it would make it easier for kids to get alcohol. However, the various e-commerce sites that sold alcohol all claimed they had strict procedures to stop it from happening. A quick test by Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly and some college kids put that theory to the test and discovered it was quite easy for underage people to get alcohol online - and some fairly well-known companies may take the fall. The various sites did little to confirm the age of a buyer, and delivery companies FedEx, UPS and DHL often ignored required procedures that the boxes be signed for by someone over 21. In some cases, they even just left the boxes in front of a door without ever getting a signature - even if the box made it clear that a signature by someone over 21 was required.

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,
Rather Than Kids
12/27/2004 04:42 AM
Well, normally, people wait until after they've received presents to dump them on eBay. However, one father who felt his three sons were being particularly bad lately decided that to punish them he's putting their presents up for sale on eBay. To be honest, this sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt -- and it seems likely that, now that this is getting attention, that casino that seems to be buying e very random quirky auction item will snap this one up. Update: Whoops. It's apparently already happened. Indeed, the casino in question has d ecided to buy the undelivered presents. This is sort of an update on our story last year about how sellers were increasingly looking to use eBay as a publicity generating tool. It appears that's now being used by buyers to generate publicity, as well.

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids
12/19/2004 03:47 PM
The common bit of wisdom is that MP3s are a young person's technology. It's the teens and the folks just coming out of college that are the MP3 generation, after all, so they'd be the most likely to own an MP3 player, right? Not at all, apparently. A new study says that 90% of MP3 player owners over 34 years old. While this may have something to do with the high price of many of the best MP3 players, the numbers still don't seem right. It would be interesting to see the methodology behind this study. That's not to say that those over 34 aren't likely to own an MP3 player, but it's hard to believe that 90% of MP3 players go to those 35 and older.

Mushroom! Mushroom!

Mushroom! Mushroom! 09/01/2004 03:26 PM
Paul Stamets (previously discussed here) says mushrooms are potent antiviral and antibacterial agents, and they also might end up saving the Earth. I wonder what the fungi would say (or sing.) [Via Disinformation.]

Death by Mushroom

Death by Mushroom 09/23/2004 09:07 AM

Headless Thunderbirds in cinemas soon.

« Mushrooms that resemble the Lauttasaari water tower. »

Finland has a thing for mushrooms because, I suppose, they grow pretty well here and they are plentiful this time of year. The first time I visited Helsinki, I fell in love with the Lauttasaari water tower because I thought it looked like an alien space ship or mushroom that had an eerie blue glow at night. The water towers in Finland frequently resemble mushrooms or other fanciful shapes, but the Lauttasaari space mushroom remains my favourite.

On one of the first grocery shopping trips I noted a wide array of mushrooms in the produce section and Jarkko pointed out the false morels that he said were deadly unless cooked properly [I will add here that there is a marvelous Nordic and Russian languages food glossary as well as a very beautifully done Finnish/Russian collection of recipes on the same website]. This, of course, was noted next to the harmless looking fungi, but only in Finnish. I suppose that I was shocked to think that anything in the grocery might actually be deadly, especially for some city kid like me who wouldn't know my ass from a poisonous mushroom if let into the woods on my own. My German mother loved to drag us out into the woods to hunt for morels as well as for blackberries to make into jams. The only problem with this was that if you didn't put at least 3 rubberbands/elastics around your sleeves and pant legs and wear gloves on your hands and plastic bags over your socks, you'd be in agony for a week or more due to the dreaded fuckingus chiggerius. These guys are invisible and invite 5000 of their closest friends to dine on your digested flesh, they make mosquitos look good. My choice whether to forage in the woods with the flesh eaters vs. shopping in the grocery in later years was pretty easy.

I also immediately thought of the liability insurance and lawsuits in the US arising from all the deaths of people who couldn't be bothered to read the warning signs next to them. Perhaps this is passive Darwinism in Finland at work since kids here are trained in the art of identifying mushrooms and berries, even the Latin taxonomic names, from birth so the unsuspecting foreigners who go to the shop and think they look yummy and eat them raw, get removed from the gene pool. I wonder how many cases of death by toxic mushroom happen every year. The woolly milkcap above, a.k.a. Lactarius torminosus, is toxic if not parboiled before eating. I have to admit that its peach colour with furry texture wouldn't lead me to pick it and eat it without the onset of starvation. I think I'll stick with shopping in the grocery and eating only those things that I recognize and am sure won't kill me. :)

The Baltic herring market [note to port of helsinki webmaster: 20 lines of plaintext in a .doc format is really aggravating.] is coming soon so we should all prepare for the herring breath and seagulls. A friend who lives in LA composed a lovely poem one night on IRC about herring that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Burning Herring by Conrad

My herring burns at both ends
It will not last the night
But oh my friends
But oh my friends
It is a fucking FISH on FIRE!

I've decided to work with B&W film a bit more since I actually prefer it to colour film but the cost of developing it is mysteriously double the cost of developing other films. So, I'm going to start developing the film myself and use my cheap negative scanner for displaying them on the net. The equipment needed is actually pretty simple and the instructions from Ilford make it seem very hard to fuck up. I've always wanted to try developing film so why not? Hey, I'm a chemist, I should be able to manage this...I think. If anyone knows of the secret place where one can get development equipment and chemicals, aside from fotoyks, in a one-stop kind of shopping orgy, I'd be much obliged for any information leading to the stinking-up of our sauna-soon-to-be-darkroom.

Addendum: I was thinking why the varmints are called chiggers and went to look it up in the Dictionary of American Regional English and thought I'd share. :)

chigger n Pronc-spp cheeger, chego chigo(e), chigre, chigroe [Alter of Cariban chigoe] CFjigger Note: since both chigger and jigger are used of two similar tiny parasites, a mite (sense 1 below) which is widely distributed in the US, and a flea (sense 2 below) found chiefly in the South, there is overlapping both of the creatures' occucrrence and of the names, with some popular confusion.

1 A harvest mite (Trombicula spp.) Also called jigger, redbug

2 also chigoe flea: A flea (Tunga penetrans) that burrows into the skin. Also called jigger.

The first citation is from 1851 but I'm pretty sure the native Americans had a few choice words for them as well. It's interesting to note that the false belief that it 'burrows into the skin' remains even in the recent DARE definition.

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash 03/14/2005 06:03 PM

c_flash_dime_bit.jpgPretec Electronics Corporation, apparently unaware that more than eight competing formats already exist in this market, has developed a new flash memory card called the C-Flash. Smaller than a dime, Pretec seems to be gambling on the "hope your customers lose your product and don't learn from their mistakes" business model. Cards with capacities up to 1GB will be available by June, and they're sampling them in mobile phones, which is just about the only place I'd want to see one. Honestly, though, there comes a point (perhaps when you require magnification equipment) when it's just too small. A note to these companies with the perpetual smaller-is-better mentalities: Just because I might one day be able to carry all of my media collection as well as the Library of Congress on a card the size of an eyelash doesn't mean I'll want to, dig?

While on the topic of Flash Memory formats, now seems like a good time to mention LIVEdigitally's Flash Card roundup, wherein they break down the Flash Jungle into small, manageable pieces.
