Say Truck Stop Hot Spot Three Times Fast

Say Truck Stop Hot Spot Three Times Fast 12/03/2003 09:48 PM

Truckers find hotspots invaluable as aid to life on the road: Truckers are using Wi-Fi hotspots as extensions of their truck cab as the service rapidly pops up at truck stops across the U.S. It's a natural offering for the truck stops, which already provided Internet access and data ports. For truckers who live out of their cabs, it's just another amenity that lets them stay in touch with family and friends, relax, and keep on top of their work....

Stop SQL Injection Attacks Before They
Stop You

Stop SQL Injection Attacks Before They
Stop You
09/12/2004 11:33 PM
Armed with advanced server-side technologies like ASP.NET and powerful database servers such as Microsoft® SQL Server™, developers are able to create dynamic, data-driven Web sites with incredible ease. But the power of ASP.NET and SQL can easily be used against you by hackers mounting an all-too-common class of attack—the SQL injection attack. The basic idea behind a SQL injection attack is this: you create a Web page that allows the user to enter text into a textbox that will be used to execute a query against a database. A hacker enters a malformed SQL statement into the textbox that changes the nature of the query so that it can be used to break into, alter, or damage the back-end database. How is this possible? Let me illustrate with an example.

Monster truck

Monster truck 06/23/2004 11:13 AM
truck The world's largest truck is the Liebherr T 282B, used for hauling in the mining industry. At more than 24 feet tall and 47 feet long, the 224-ton monstrosity can still putt along at 40 miles per hour. New Scientist has published an interview with Francis Bartley, head of R&D for Liebherr:
"The first time I was in it at a mine, the driver started to drive away and actually ran into the back of a service truck. It seems we mashed it down to the ground. I saw someone yelling, but we didn't feel a thing."

Just a truck kind of gal

Just a truck kind of gal 07/06/2004 06:26 PM
I don't come from a family of car people, you know, those kind of people that actually car about cars, buy new cars, keep their cars clean, and/or actually name their cars. No, my parents represented that rarest of California demographic during their eight years in the Bay Area: the one car family. Nearly my whole life our four-person family had one solid, dependable car. Nothing too flashy, and rarely anything new. At this very moment, my parents swear their current car (purchased used) is satisfactory, even though they just had the door welded back on because it was rusted through and nearly fell off. So imagine my surprise this summer when I discovered that there was a vehicle for me! After years of avoiding driving as much as possible, and in general demonstrating great distain for all things car, I've unlocked one of my life's mysteries. You know how they say you really figure out who you are in your thirties? Well I've discovered I am a truck person! I've been lucky to have a 1996 Ford pick-up at my disposal this summer, and boy have I enjoyed tooling around in it! Aside from its obvious greatness due to its green color, it's also just fun. It bumps along the dirt roads in a very satisfying manner. Its bed is perfect for holding my clamming gear, or mulch, or just beach chairs. And everywhere I go, I share knowing nods with other island pick-up truck drivers. Yup, I may not be a car person. But I sure am a truck person.

What's huge, slow, and capable of hauling up to 400 tons of bullshit? While my first response would probably be Slashdot, too, in this case we're describing the Liebherr T 282B truck, a 224 ton monster with a massive 3650-horsepower diesel engine. New Scientist has an interview with Liebherr R&D head Francis Bartleby in which he drops a load of tasty T 282B trivia, like the fact that the huge diesel engine actually generates electricity to power two electric drive motors, and the story about the time a driver of one of the big trucks accidentally crushed a normal-sized service truck and didn't even notice.

Santa drives a UPS truck

Santa drives a UPS truck 12/24/2004 01:01 PM

(Picture47, originally uploaded by davidfg)

We made a rule in the house this year that packages mailed to us and still unopened count as wrapping, whether or not the things inside are wrapped as well (we have no way of knowing). You can't see what's inside the boxes so it does the same thing as wrapping. It also cuts out a stupid step where you have to open a present for someone, wrap it, then have them open it on xmas day.

But not this year, brown boxes count just as much as holiday paper wrapping.

The move would trump Amazon’s A9 service, which offers two-dimensional photos of buildings on US city streets. The trucks would drive along every San Francisco street using the lasers to measure the dimensions of buildings, to create a 3D framework onto which digital photos can be mapped…. cap_navistar_cxt.03.jpg imageAs my buddy Ryan put it, the new CXT truck is "not just Muppets silly, it's like 'I can't believe he killed the whole human race,'" kind of silly. The new 21.5-foot truck weighs seven tons and gets about 6 to 10 miles to the gallon. It's essentially a semi-truck scaled back to be a consumer vehicle - but it's still going to cost over $90k.

David Maloney, a trucker from Aledo, Texas, is one who'll go the distance to reach a truck stop equipped with wireless Internet access.

"The only time I really get to use any kind of broadband is out here on the road," said Maloney, who recently stopped at a Flying J with Wi-Fi on his way from Virginia to Appleton, Wis. "That's the whole reason I came this far last night."
