Atom has better podcasting support than
RSS

Atom has better podcasting support than
RSS
06/05/2005 11:32 PM

Podcasting originated as a feature of RSS, but as the world moves to the new standard Atom format, podcasters will too. Atom can support podcasting through the <link> element. As is the case with RSS 2.0 based podcasts, you can only have one podcast per entry. But, with Atom you can have a different representation for each language and for each content-type. For example, if you want to make a podcast available in both English and German and in both MP3 and WMV formats, you can do it by adding links like those below to the entries in your feed:
   <link
href=”http://example.com/podcasts/show001-usenglish.mpg”
       hreflang=”en-US” length=”21472922” type=”audio/mpg”
/>

   <link
href=”http://example.com/podcasts/show001-usenglish.wmv”
       hreflang=”en-US” length=”23889921” type=”audio/wmv”
/>

   <link href=”http://example.com/podcasts/show001-german.mp3”
       hreflang=”de-DE” length=”20032879” type=”audio/mpg”
/>

   <link href=”http://example.com/podcasts/show001-german.wmv”
       hreflang=”de-DE” length=”19907766” type=”audio/wmv”
/>

Disclaimer: Atom is a work in progress (but nearl y complete). This is based on Atom format draft 08. Atom experts: did I get something wrong in the above example?

podcasting support
12/17/2004 06:38 PM

FeedDemon 1.5 BETA 3a is now available. As you can see from the release notes, there are a number of changes in this build, the most notable being podcasti ng and improved enclosure support.

After downloading beta 3a, simply install it directly on top of your current version of FeedDemon and your existing data will be retained. However, given that this is a beta release, I recommend backing up FeedDemon's cache folder before upgrading (if you're not sure where this folder is, select File > Manage Cache > Explore Cache Folder).

Note to translators: FeedDemon's language file is likely to change in subsequent betas, so I recommend against translating it until version 1.5 has reached release candidate (RC) status.

JSPWiki goes Atom

JSPWiki goes Atom 05/12/2004 06:53 PM
Okay, folks! Here's the cool bit of the day: JSPWiki now officially has support for the Atom feed format in the latest CVS version. It only works for the Weblog plugin for the moment, but there's now an atom.jsp, as well as a FeedDiscoveryTag so that you can find the Atom feed easily. It'll just need some tweaks to work for regular wiki pages as well.

It's live now, on this site. Check out http://www.ecyrd.com/But tUgly/atom.jsp! It even validates! :-)

Off to bed now. Must grab some sleep.

JSPWiki supports now the
rel="nofollow" attribute
02/01/2005 09:48 PM
JSPWiki hates spam too. Starting from the current CVS version (2.1.140) JSPWiki supports the Google initiative for reducing comment and wiki spam. Administrators may set the "jspwiki.translatorReader.useRelNofollow" parameter to force the rel="nofollow" attribute to be added to any external links.

(Other than that, we're - or to be more precise, Andrew Jaquith is - doing a complete rework of the authentication system. This means that it will not be available in 2.2, but will be postponed to 2.4. Personally, I find this a great relief - adding the auth system to the wiki nearly killed my interest to JSPWiki development. Wikis and strong permission control just don't go well together. There has been now a lot of new development in the CVS, as I don't have to worry about the auth system anymore.)

Last night was the last night alone. After this weekend, she'll now sleep beside me - for a long time, I hope. After a flight back from Germany I clambered to my apartment, stood outside in the snowfall and tried to fish my keys from my pocket. A strange thought hit me: "Whee! Outi must be home!" and an unvoluntary, unstoppable, wide grin spread onto my face. Of course, she wasn't - that was the last night - but I realized the simple idea of her being there made me deliriously happy.

I guess I'm still in love.

Can Tagging Help Search?

Can Tagging Help Search? 03/24/2005 08:16 PM

Tagging

Tagging 04/10/2005 09:53 PM

The idea of "tagging" content is suddenly everywhere. With Flickr and del.icio.us and Technorati embracing the concept of tags, suddenly it's getting some broad acceptance.

But what are "tags"? At the most basic level, they're just keywords — categorization without a master table of categories. Categorization that people can make up on the fly without having to "create" the tag in advance or fit it into some taxonomy. It's categorization from the bottom up, exactly like I theorized on here but never implemented.

What's the drawback? Mainly, that tags won't get standardized. I may tag my articles with "automotive" while you may tag them with "cars." Or that you may mispell a tag name once in a while and not notice it.

But this apparently doesn't matter so much to anyone. Tagging is the Next Big Thing, even though it's a technical step backwards from the button-downed, tightly normalized way of doing things.

I think it's refreshing. It's nice to let our a deep breath and just use something that works without having to make Poindexter the Perfect Programmer happy.

Jon Udell gave a great screencast about a month ago about del.icio.us and how he uses it. It's worth watching if you haven't grasped the significance of the tagging phenomenon. Towards the end, he gets into the "soft" topic of how languages are formed and how tagging is a way of essentially writing another language which isn't perfect but comes about though informal usage, negotiation, and acceptance. (This is technically called a Creole.)

For those more interested in the technical ramifications of all this, here's a page with links to resources on how to make SQL understand tag concepts, regardless of application.

Subject Guides, the Folksonomic Way

Del.icio.us, the bookmarking website with tags that I discussed on January 6, seems like the perfect tool for creating course-specific subject guides. Just agree on a tag, like the course number, and the subject librarian, professor, and students can build a subject guide cooperatively, on the fly.

I just tagged the two resources I identified for my Digital Libraries class with the course number. So they are now easily found by myself, and anyone else in the class, at del.icio.us/tag/sislt9409. ” [Wanderings of a Student Librarian]

Joy Weese Moll demonstrates another way in which librarians and librarians-to-be can take advantage of tagging and folksonomies! It will be interesting to see if her teacher or her fellow students begin contributing to the tag. Here’s hoping….

A Problem with Tagging

A Problem with Tagging 06/17/2005 03:45 PM

I wonder how long before the whole tagging phenomenon jumps the shark? I like it and everything, but have a sneaking suspicion that we're going to come full circle back to taxonomies.

We've talked about tax onomies before — these are the big parent-child tree structures that have traditionally defined information architecture. Tagging is a direct response to the complication and "monolithic-ness" of the taxonomy — instead of defining the entire tree, you just label the one leaf that you're working with.

But what happens when the tree starts creeping back?

For instance, one of the drawbacks with tagging is that people have different names for the different things. What I call "automotive," you might call "cars," so our entries don't appear under the same tag. Have this happen enough times, and it gets annoying.

How do we get around this? Well, let's create a thesaurus then. Let's tell the system that "cars" and "automotive" are more or less the same thing, so if someone searches for anything tagged "automotive," return anything tagged as "cars" as well. Awesome — now we're back in action, even though we have a bit of a top-down system to maintain. It's a small price to pay.

But what happens when someone wants to broaden their search beyond just a simple tag? Instead of just automotive-related items, I want to find anything to do with vehicles.

How do I back up from "automotive" to "vehicles"? Well, we need to tell the system that "cars" is a child of "vehicles." For that matter, there are more than just that in "vehicles." "Vehicles" is really a parent of "planes," "trains," and "boats" too. No problem, we just need to create a recursive table that tracks how tags are related to each other, like...a taxonomy of tags...

And, with that, we've come full circle back to the top-down taxonomy. Wow, that was quick.

I don't think this is so bad, because it still has some advantages. The editing interface for tags (a simple texbox) is much better than the mess we get with parent-child stuff (usually a huge list of checkboxes).

Additionally, tag-based organization can kind of define itself. Instead of sitting around thinking up a huge taxonomy before you get started, you can watch the tags that come rolling through the system and just organize them as they come in. ("Oh look, another tag for 'hydrofoils.' Maybe we can stick that under 'boats'..")

Finally, if you're really anal retentive, you can "normalize" the tags as they get applied. When an item gets submitted with "cars" and "howto" assigned, you can detect and change them to "automotive" and "turorial" if you like. Be sure to notify the user, however, so they know where to find the thing when they go looking for it (or just make sure the the thesaurus has the correct relationships defined).

Anyone have thoughts on this? Am I just trying to rain on the tagging parade?

Reiser4 file semantics: An opportunity
for open source
09/09/2004 05:28 AM
Some people feel that the Reiser4 file semantics will present problems for the Linux community. In a nutshell, every file now looks like a directory and can be opened as a directory. The names in that directory are not new files but metadata associated with the file, as documented by Hans Reiser on the Namesys site. The immediate response in the community has been that this is too big a change and should be withdrawn. I humbly propose that this is a challenge we should face head on now or we may not have an opportunity to do so in the future.

Tagging and WinFS in the Enterprise

Tagging and WinFS in the Enterprise 03/30/2005 09:00 PM

Tagging is useful at personal level for categorizing data of any size and type without the constrain of hierarchy.  While WinFS is more than this, adding tagging to traditional file system will deliver most of the benefits WinFS offers at the user experience level.

But IMHO the real power of tagging can be hatched only at the workgroup level.  This means introducing new ways (UI-wise) to expose and discover tags others use with the same level of ease as children learn new words.
