Technorati Live 8 launches 06/24/2005 09:59 PM

We just launched the Technorati Live 8 site.

Technorati has teamed up with Live 8 to bring you the latest conversations about the campaign to Make Poverty History. Read first hand accounts of the concerts and events, and get all the news and opinion from the blogosphere.

We've also put together some resources to help you find your way around Live 8 and the blog world:

What is Live 8? Which organisations are behind Live 8?

Are you new to blogging? Find out what it's all about.

Get a Live 8 badge for your blog.

Join in the conversation and find out how to make your posts show up on Technorati.

Do more than just blog - contact the G8 leaders.

The posts listed on the Technorati Live 8 site have been written by bloggers worldwide and appear in real time from Technorati's index of 1.1 million blogs. Find out more about Technorati.

Joe Trippi called us about two weeks ago with this idea. Thanks to a guest appearance of Suw Charman as the producer of the site and extra hard work by the Technorati team, we were able to get this site out in time.

This is such a good opportunity for nations like the United States and Japan to helped their damaged images and also show their solidarity to a cause that they shouldn't have to think twice about. I'm amazed at how poor the response of some of the developed nations has been to this call. Hopefully this concert and the voice of the blogs will help get their attention.

Updated politics.technorati.com is live!

Updated politics.technorati.com is live! 08/30/2004 03:01 AM

I'm proud to announce that we've just gone live with an updated feature set and look to our Election Watch 2004 site, politics.technorati.com. You'll notice a few big changes, and a bunch of smaller, more subtle changes and fixes. We've changed the orientation of the site away from posting the most recent posts by authoritative political bloggers (although you can still get to that view in 3-pane, liberal , conservativ e, RNC, or combined view) to one that focuses on where the authoritative political bloggers are spending their attention - what we are calling the Politics Attention Index™.

The Attention Index measures the blog posts, news articles, and other places on the Internet where bloggers are pointing. This is similar to what Blogdex, Daypop, Popdex, or even Technorati's own NewsTalk is doing, but we are limiting the set of bloggers to the ~10,000 most authoritative political bloggers, which we derived by looking at both what bloggers write about as well as how many other political bloggers are linking to them. This is also how we analyzed blogs to find the most authoritative liberal and conservative bloggers, and where they're spending their attention over the last 12 hours (here's the Liberal Attention Index, and the Conservative Attention Index). Note that you'll sometimes find the same items discussed by both liberals and conservatives, but often the items are quite different, or the amount of attention spent is quite different. These authoritative political bloggers became a collaborative filter for events going on in the world - helping to filter out the most interesting and important things going on around the political blogosphere.

We've also added charts and graphs! Working with the folks at CNN, we're tracking the histories and comparisons of some of the major players and stories going on in the political world. We'll be updating the charts that you can see with others as topics emerge at and after the conventions.

As always, we're looking for your feedback! There's a lot we did that are improvements on the old design, but I know there's still a lot that can be made even better. Let me know what you think of things, and how we can be of service to you.

Kudos to the entire Technorati team - you guys made this happen I'm really proud of you.

New Technorati beta launches

New Technorati beta launches 04/09/2004 04:12 PM

I'm proud to announce the new Technorati redesign has launched, available at www.technorati.com. Some highlights of the new design:

  1. Three free email or RSS watchlists for individuals - all you have to do is sign up as a member. Of course, people who have paid for watchlists are grandfathered in as well.

  2. Lots of UI fixes and tweaks. We listened hard to all of you who told us that our UI needed a lot of work. I hope that this is a step in the right direction. We tried to do what we could to humanize the language as well - using words like "conversations" and "references" and "sources" to help better describe what Technorati does, for example. I'm sure there's a long way to go, and lots more improvements we can make. Help us.

  3. Keyword Search beyond just RSS. We improved our post detection capabilities, going beyond what pure RSS gives you - so that you can search the entire post, not just the summaries often found in RSS feeds.

  4. Better explanations and interfaces for Current Events and NewsTalk (formerly called Breaking News). Click on the arrows to expand or compress blogger commentary, to allow a "quick view" or a more context-rich, deeper view into the data.

  5. BookTalk (formerly called Hot Products), a listing of the most talked-about books, DVDs, and other products in the blogosphere in the last 24 hours.

  6. Improved features for weblog authors: First, a more robust, reliable "Claim Your Blog" codebase. Once you, as an author, have claimed your weblog, you get a bunch of new features, including the blog rank for your blog. (Find out how far off of the top 100 you are...) We're also working on a number of other "Author Dashboard" type features coming soon.

  7. Caching, speedups, and bug fixes. Almost too many to mention.

A few points to note:
  1. Response time of the searches is still not reliably fast enough. Some searches are fast, some take a long time. We know this is unacceptable, and we are working on this. Site reliability and faster response time are our top priorities. We are working hard to improve the user experience.

  2. We're working on providing RSS and email watchlists for keyword searches as well, but it wasn't ready for the cut, so it'll go out as soon as it is ready, which should be quite soon. In the meantime, you can do keyword searches on the site, but can't get RSS or email subscriptions yet.

Send us feedback! Use feedback@technorati.com to send feedback to the Technorati team, or send comments directly to me at david-blog@sifry.com. Your thoughts and comments are extremely important to us.

Thanks again for all your support.

Technorati and CNN

Technorati and CNN 07/21/2004 04:38 PM

A few minutes ago CNN announced that Technorati will be providing real-time analysis of the political blogosphere at next week's Democratic National Convention. I will be on-site in CNN's convention broadcast center, along with Mary Hodder, and I'll be providing regular on-air commentary on what bloggers are saying about politics and the convention. And on Sunday, July 25, we'll launch a new section of our site for political coverage: politics.technorati.com. This site will make it easy for bloggers,
journalists, and anyone interested in politics to see the postings of the most linked-to political bloggers, to track the ideas with the fastest-growing buzz, and to monitor conversations in thousands of other political blogs. CNN.com will link to this site, and we'll be updating the CNN site with the latest from the blogosphere.

This is a very exciting development for us at Technorati, and a great acknowledgement of the importance that blogging has achieved in political discourse. We're incredibly humbled by this opportunity. It provides us with a great way to serve all of you who make this amazing new medium possible. We take this responsibility very seriously and hope to make you proud.

What is Technorati?

What is Technorati? 01/22/2004 02:29 AM

If you're one of the tens of thousands of people who use Technorati every day, you'll notice that most of our changes (on the new beta site so far have been under the hood. Changes to the body have been minimal. As a result, we've been scratching our heads because we've never explained exactly what Technorati *is*. For that matter, we've never explained much about what a "cosmos" is, either -- even though that's what Technorati finds in its searches.

So I thought it would make sense to ask you what Technorati is. Is it a search engine for blogs? A conversation engine? Or something else again?

Same with "cosmos." Is there a more self-explanatory word for what Technorati finds? Or a better way to say exactly what "cosmos" means?

Let us know. We'd like to hear from you. Thanks!

What's up with Technorati

What's up with Technorati 11/17/2003 05:46 AM
David Sifry's Technorati service -- a blogmining and analysis system that can tell you the shape and velocity of the blogosphere at any given moment -- has been cranky and creaky for a couple days now. Sifry has posted an update to his blog, with info on how things are going and the difficulty of keeping pace with blogging's amazing growth.
Allow me to give you some growth statistics: One year ago, when I started Technorati on a single server in my basement, we were adding between 2,000-3,000 new weblogs each day, not counting the people who were updating sites we were already tracking. In March of this year, when we switched over to a 5 server cluster, we were keeping up with about 4,000-5,000 new weblogs each day. Right now, we're adding 8,000-9,000 new weblogs every day, not counting the 1.2 Million weblogs we already are tracking. That means that on average, a brand new weblog is created every 11 seconds. We're also seeing about 100,000 weblogs update every day as well, which means that on average, a weblog is updated every 0.86 seconds.

Keyword search ads are live
By dsifry

Well, there's been a lot going on over at Technorati, and I've been so busy that blogging has been pretty light. I hope that I can blog more often as the summer continues.

Anyway, here's some fun news that I'm happy to report: Technorati has taken its first steps towards the business models that we've chosen: We've rolled out keyword search advertising on the website. You'll notice the "Sponsored Links" box on the right hand side of the results page on many terms that you do searches upon. This is done through a partnership we have with findwhat.com, and quite frankly, it is just a first step. There's a lot of improvements and changes that we want to make, and this is definitely a "crawl-before-you-walk" kind of opportunity, but it is a first step. For example, I want to have a system that makes it easier to do targeting (blog-based? topic based? authority-based?) and get better reporting. We're also really interested in your feedback - leave a comment or a link, or drop us a line at feedback@technorati.com. We are also working on implementing a lot of the great feedback we got at the developer's forum last month.

Oh yeah - if you're interested in seeing your ads on technorati.com search results today, here's how you get more information.

Lastly, big kudos to all the folks back at the office, who made this happen - you guys rock.

My son's first concert 05/27/2004 10:57 AM

Like most kids his age, my soon-to-be-five-year-old son Isaac loves music. We listen to a lot of music together, ranging from kiddie tunes to loud rock-and-roll - and he always likes the loud rock-and-roll the best. In fact, for quite a while he's been asking to go see a rock concert, but there obviously aren't many real rock shows I'd let him see at this point.

So, when I found out that Rush was kicking off their 30th anniversary tour here in Nashville, I decided to take Isaac. I was worried, though, that it would be too much for him, and we'd have to leave after the first song. I mean, he's not even five - how could I expect him to deal with the overload of a Rush concert?

Turns out my worries were a waste of time, though - he loved the show. Believe it or not, he was pumping his little hand in the air during YYZ, and he even shouted "Hey!" with the rest of the crowd during 2112. Yes, I was a proud papa :)

Arlo Guthrie Concert Notes

Arlo Guthrie Concert Notes 12/17/2004 06:36 PM

Last night four of us walked over to Passim, the legendary folk music club in Harvard Square, to hear Arlo Guthrie perform.  Passim is a basement room furnished with spectacularly uncomfortable cast-off folding chairs.  Vegetarian food is available.  The chairs and the food immediately raise the question of, if folk music is supposed to represent the struggle of working-class Americans how come Passim doesn't serve food that these folks would actually like (e.g., hamburgers) and chairs that would accomodate the typically obese frames of the poor.  Most of the time artists at Passim speak out from the stage against U.S. oppression of Iraqis, against George W. Bush, against Republicans, etc.  These protests elicit universal applause from the audience, all of whom apparently can agree on these points and all of whom are apparently rather irritated.  A true protest at Passim, one that would challenge the prevailing beliefs in the room, would be a leaflet arguing in favor of eating steak, touting its anemia-fighting and mood-mellowing properties.  Not to mention the fact that steak encourages the consumption of red wine, which is known to have many health benefits.

Guthrie came on stage after a warm-up by Alastair Moock, whose songs are heavily laced with the modern vocabulary of recovery.  The audience was awed by Guthrie's impressive guitar playing, songwriting, and storytelling.  The guy has been on the road for most of his 57 years!

Arlo Guthrie is a lot less bitter about the American political situation than the average performer at Passim and the average audience member.  He pointed out that there is only one guy in the White House and lots of folks outside the White House.  Guthrie further noted that if the world were truly full of peace and love like all the folk singers wanted and if everyone were in perfect health then it would be awfully hard to accomplish any positive changed.  By contrast, "in a world as fucked us as this one it has never been possible to do so little little and achieve so much good."

Guthrie drew a lot of strength from the final words of "Ma" in Grapes of Wrath:  "we will always be here, because we're the people", explaining that politicians come and go but the people remain to do the work and therefore can't be ignored.  It occurred to me that perhaps this idea is obsolete in an age of offshoring.  In the old days there was always work for unskilled uneducated American labor.  Now that Mexico, India, and China are tied to us with Internet and container ships is that still true?

Concert Companion Gets Wide Testing

Concert Companion Gets Wide Testing 07/05/2004 08:10 AM

concert_companion.jpg imageGod bless Roland Valliere for disproving what I'd worked so hard to establish: that not everyone from Kansas City is a raving idiot. Valliere's Concert Companion, a Palm-based PDA that can be rented to orchestragoers that displays topical information about the ongoing performance (and that we've mentioned before) is now being widely tested by a variety of organizations, included our own New York Philharmonic. Although it's not an entirely un-bumpy ride -- The Times' reviewer had his unit lock up three times, although they don't mention if it had gotten wet when they hosed out his cage -- the Concert Companion is a great idea, and I'm glad to see it getting the chance it deserves.

The concert tonight was amazing. I hope people got a chance to watch the video feed. Gil/Byrne were amazing and were eventually able to get a house full of somewhat tired old people on their feet and dancing. It was also amazing to realize how much Talking Heads songs were a part of my DNA... anyway. Maybe more when I'm less tired. Need to go to bed.

Oh, and David Byrne dedicated "Road to Nowhere" to the Repbulicans.

AP - Glen Campbell called it "a captive audience" — and he wasn't kidding. Campbell, nearing the end of his 10-day sentence for extreme drunk driving, gave a free 30-minute concert Friday night for about 1,000 inmates at Maricopa County's outdoor jail.

If you attended or heard the webcast of the Creative Commons Benefit Concert that was presented by WIRED last night, I'm sure you'll agree it was a fantastic show. Gilberto Gil and David Byrne played for almost two hours each, and even sang a couple songs together. We want to thank everyone that came out and everyone that helped setup the show.

We've updated the WIRED page with new information, featuring a short snippet from our second movie explaining the Sampling licenses. We've also created a one-page comic explaining how the license works in practice.

In other news, we've also launched a new way to support the work of our non-profit. Our support page carries several ways to give to the organization: you can become a Commoner and obtain varying levels of merchandise for your donation, you can donate directly, and you can buy t-shirts from us or cafepress.

RIAA: Got a camerphone? Leave the
concert
08/06/2004 07:52 AM
The RIAA sponsored a Black Eyed Peas conference at the DNC at which no cameras were allowed. The door security turned away anyone with a cameraphone.
The result: Chaos in the line, as people were sent home after failing cell phone inspection. The choice was to leave your phone / camera behind or leave the concert. People were mad. ("Where is the love?" they asked). So I asked the bouncer, "what's this about?"

And he said "It's not our deal. Its those guys [the sponsors]."
