The bot can recognize strangers from 30 miles away and is equipped with a voice warning system. Ligurio also sports two folding arms allowing it to grab explosives and relocate them to a place you wouldn't mind asploded.

Japanese Robot Supermodel

Japanese Robot Supermodel 03/14/2005 06:03 PM
Okay, don't get too excited, this isn't quite as life-like as you imagined when you saw the headline. Roland Piquepaille sent us this news on Japanese robotics, "A Japanese designer has developed a mannequin robot, Palette, which can adapt its movements to the shoppers passing in front of it, according to an article from Agence France-Presse (AFP), "Striking a robotic pose". Using motion-capture technology, Palette will be able to act as a supermodel. And with its specialized sensors and software, it also will be able to identify the sex and age of shoppers before transmitting them to store owners for marketing purposes. The price has not been set yet, but Palette should go on sale in 2005 in two versions: a body without legs to showcase clothings, and a torso model for jewelry." See Roland's blog for more details and a photo of Palette, a robot which intentionally has no face. Another photo is available in a recent CNET news article.

Guardrobo D1 activate anti-theft device! Guardrobo D1 put out fire! Guardrobo D1 GO! Every couple of days we get a product that just touches our whimsy spot and makes us smile.

genImage.aspx.jpgGuardrobo D1 is a programmable guard robot (Guard+Robot. Get it?) designed to patrol stores and offices in Japan. This pint-sized fellow will relay back camera information, listen for intruders, and can even put out fires. Interestingly enough, they are touting the Guardrobo as a solution for the problem of an aging population. Because 1 in 5 Japanese are 65 or older, they don't have enough strapping young security guards. Therefore, they'll become subservient to demonic robots. "BRING ME OIL, OLD MAN!"

Sony Claims Humanoid Robot First 12/18/2003 11:48 AM
A press release from Sony claims they have developed the world's first fully autonomous humanoid robot with internal power and control that is capable of running. The robot is an upgraded version of the Sony QRIO, a robot we've seen before. The robot uses a control theory called Zero Moment Point (ZMP) and in addition to running is capable of other extreme motion that involves one or both feet leaving the ground such as jumping. Additional photos of QRIO in action can be found on the Japanese PC Watch site. There's also a Slashdot discussion about QRIO.

EMIEW: Two-wheeled Balancing Robot 03/19/2005 02:54 AM
Everybody is talking about Hitachi's new robot, EMIEW. It's a two-wheeled balancer on the bottom and a vaguely humanoid robot on the top. EMIEW is 1.3 m tall, weighs 70 kg and can scoot along at 6 km/hr while avoiding objects with vision sensors and radar. The robot was created by the Hitachi Mechanical Engineering Research Lab which has produced a number of interesting robots over the past 40 years. And, in case you were wondering, EMIEW is an acronym for Excellent Mobility and Interactive Existence as Workmate. For more on EMIEW see the Pittsburgh Post-gazette, BBC News, Taiwan News, and Slashdot.

Roborior: Spooky Robot Pet Watcher

Roborior: Spooky Robot Pet Watcher 12/19/2004 03:41 PM
The Swirling Brain sent a spooky robot news alert in today. It seems that Tmsuk, the prolific Japanese robotics company that brought us the dragon robot Banryu, the gun-toting Tmsuk04, and other strange robots, has now come up with their weirdest robot yet. Roborior is a robot whose design was inspired by the appearance of a jellyfish but looks more like a glowing blue and red alien brain. The glowing brain moves around your house taking care of the pets (or more likely, making them hide) and looking out for intruders. This is one robot that doesn't need any weapons. If a burgler sees a glowing brain coming down a dark hall towards him, he's likely to die of fright. If it doesn't frighten intruders away by its appearance, it will call you on your cell phone and send you photos of your home being robbed. The bizarre robot was designed by Paul White of Me Company (whose angry bunny spewing eggs out of its head Flash website is almost as weird as Roborior). Tmsuk and Sanyo will be jointly marketing the Roborior robot.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

Robot Dog Fart Causes Airport Crisis

Robot Dog Fart Causes Airport Crisis 10/30/2003 11:57 PM
According to a UPI story, there was a security scare at a Norfolk, Viriginia airport when a British man attempted to pass through a security check point with his robot dog. The robot dog farted at an inopportune time, leading security experts to conclude it was a bomb. At this point, "Dave Rogerson, told the BBC he watched incredulously as FBI agents took a series of swabs from the mechanical toy's rear end." The whole thing sounds pretty unlikely but there actually is (or was) a toy robot dog that farts, the Tekno L1 Robot Puppy. The toy is no longer made so if you want to buy one in anticipation of your next international trip, you'll need to find one on eBay. Also worth noting is that one of the entries in the Viridian Biofuture Robot Dog Design Contest, also boasted this feature.

When a robot needs to guard a region of space within a building, it's faced with solving geometric problems known as the Watchman Problem and the Art Gallery Problem. A new paper titled Online Searching by an Autonomous Robot (PDF format) describes the use of a KURT3D robot with a low cost 3D laser scanner to find realistic solutions to these problems. They test their work by putting the Linux-based robot through its paces in the great hall of Schloss Birlinghoven at Fraunhofer Institute for Autonomous Intelligent Systems. Video of the robot in action and 3D scans are available on the website.

Yahoo says that Japan's top carmaker, Toyota plans to develop a humanoid robot by 2005. Toyota says they will give more details in January and hopes to display the robot at a World Exposition tradeshow in 2005. Toyota's robot will be a worker robot and built for "practical" purposes. A tall order for the robot includes nurse duties, factory work assistance, and rescue operations. Toyota even has plans to sell the humanoid robot, unlike some other Japanese companies that just build humanoid robots as test platforms and audience entertainers. Toyota even hopes to apply some of the newly developed technology to their cars.

Two Classic Robot Toys Return 09/23/2004 06:05 PM
Chief Robotman of Retrofire writes with news of two classic robot toys that are being re-released: just thought I'd suggest a near and dear couple of classic robots that are being reintroduced. Those of my years remember these guys well. I'm a collector as well, and its nice to see these guys out again. Both "Mr. Machine" and "Robert the Robot", can be purchased starting October 15th from Slinky Toys under their Ideal Classic Brand. The re-released version of these toys include reproductions of the original boxes and other goodies such as DVDs with the original TV commercials, copies of patents, or certificates of authenticity for the collector. See the Slinky Toys page for details and also the Retrofire story about the robot toy re-release. If you're interested in originals rather than reproductions, check eBay for Robert the Robot or Mr. Machine.
