Cory Doctorow: Kickass Kung Fu is a video-game in which you use real martial-arts moves to control an on-screen kung-fu fighter in order to best both human and AI opponents.

The game takes place on a 5 meter cushioned playfield suitable for martial arts and acrobatics training. Using custom computer vision technology, you are taken inside an artificial reality where the normal laws of physics no longer apply. Your movements are exaggerated so that you can easily dodge your opponent's bullets by jumping five meters in the air and landing behind his back. Using the dual projected screens, one at each end of the playfield, you can also continue by counter-attacking your stupefied enemy from the behind.

Cory Doctorow: American health insurers are working with obesity researchers to encourage children to play Dance Dance Revolution on home consoles with dance-mats as a way of reversing childhood obesity and the concomitant health costs later in life.

Jones is one of 85 children in an at-home study trying the popular Dance Dance Revolution video game to boost their activity. The study is being done by West Virginia's public employees insurance group in hopes it will lead to better health and lower costs.

Jones lost about 10 pounds by changing his diet. Now, after two weeks playing the game, he has lost another 10.

There have been discussions over the past few years about the problem of childhood obesity and how video games that force kids to be active may be at least part of the solution. While going outside and doing something is probably better, if they must be staring at a screen, they might as well be active about it. It appears that one insurance company has decided to test this out and is running a study by giving Dance, Dance Revolution to kids in an effort to make them lose some weight. While others have noted the aerobic nature of the game (and the game apparently has a calorie burning counter as an option), this appears to be the first insurance company promoting the game. Next thing you know, your car insurance rates will rise if you play Grand Theft Auto...

Yoz has posted a great account of his encounter with a touring clade of pan-European Dance Dance Revolution obsessives:

"We're a group of DDR players in Norway." Do they play other bemani games? "No, just DDR." He points to the guy he was playing with, now off the machine and chatting to his girlfriend. "He's from Sweden, he has a DDR group there too." The machine is now in the control of the third chap, a large-ish bloke with shoulder-length hair. "He has a group in France, but they play all kinds of music games." Do you guys play competitively? "Sometimes... like tomorrow. It's why we're all here - there's a big contest at the Namco arcade in Westminster. There'll be players from four different countries. It's pretty big."

This CNN piece follows the tales of formerly supersized boy and girl geeks who shed *lots* of unwanted weight playing the wacky Japanese electronic game "Dance Dance Revolution." In DDR, players stomp around on a grid of brightly lit squares while hyperfast techno music blares at them from a video display unit. There's also a home version, which sells for under US$50.

As she cooled herself in front of a fan at a video arcade, two teenage boys danced on a machine nearby. Their sneakers pounded out a staccato rhythm at a pace so fast that "Lord of the Dance"'s Michael Flatley would be envious.

Not everyone sees dramatic results. Seventeen-year-old Justin Meeks says his body is more toned, but his weight hasn't changed. He's pleased to point out, though, that his dancing skills have helped him get girls. "Two. I'm guilty of that," Justin said with a grin as he watched friends play DDR.

Cory Doctorow: A Junior/Senior High School principal in Vermont has banned in-school blogging because "blogging isn't educational."

Principal Chris Sousa said the decision to block the site from school was made because blogging is not an educational use of school computers.

But he's also urging parents to keep tabs on their children's blogging, with a particularly close eye to what personal information the student may be posting on sites like Myspace.com.

In 1988, I was the writer-in-electronic-residence for a class of grade 2/3 students in Toronto, reading and helping them with their writing via 14.4K modems using ZModem transfers. Getting them to use to computer to write, revise, and critique one another was an amazingly powerful tool for unleashing their creativity and improving their communications skills. If this prinicpal thinks blogging isn't educational, he needs his head examined: he should be seeking out every student blogger in the school and giving them special time to blog more -- and giving them extra credit besides. Earlier this month, we had the story of some students who were suspended for video taping their teacher lose his temper. The punishment seemed somehow backwards (even if all the attention later resulted in videos of those same students destr oying property coming to light as well). Here's another case that sounds quite similar. A high school student photographed the school's principal smoking on school grounds, in violation of state law and posted it to the web. He also passed out fliers around the school pointing to the website -- which seems to be the argument the school is using to suspend him. The principal is claiming that the suspension was for "harassing and slandering her and being a disruptive influence." Of course, since it appears she actually was breaking the law, then it seems the slander part is tough to show. Of course, part of this points out a cultural change that people need to get used to: the fact that you can be watched and recorded almost anywhere at any time.

As text messaging is clearly taking off with the younger generation, over in the UK they've been making quite an effort to help older generations keep up. Last year, in the UK, they set up a "Teac h UR Mum 2 Txt" program, which was mostly based on the idea of promoting safety by helping parents stay in touch with their kids. Of course, it sounds like the kids may not have been the greatest teachers, because wireless carrier Orange has decided to take matters into their own hands (obviously not for altruistic purposes) and has started offering a "how to SMS" class for those over 50. They also learn how to download ringtones, so it may not be just the kids with the annoying ringtones any more.
