Nvidia GoForce 3D 4500

Nvidia GoForce 3D 4500 09/21/2004 12:27 PM

vnvidia_4500.jpg imageDespite the occasional interesting anomaly, games on mobile phones have been fairly lackluster. That's not really the fault of the game producers as much as it has been the platforms themselves, I think - nobody wants to spend a few tens of thousands of dollars on a game that can only be run on a single model of handset (unless they're getting some nice subsidies from the handset maker, of course).

I do have to wonder, though, if maybe the future of phone gaming isn't platform compatibility (like the various Java flavors that should work as standards, but often don't) but instead something more akin to the PC game space, where gamers start driving the inclusion of their preferred 3D hardware into handsets, and phones because "Nvidia phones" or "ATI Enabled."

Aiptek PocketDV 4500 07/16/2004 10:08 AM

aiptek_4100.jpg imageIt's probably not going to give you the same sort of visual fidelity of a nicer camera, but for $230 the new AIPTEK PocketDV 4100 looks like a fun diversion, with a 4-megapixel sensor and a 1.8-inch color LCD screen. Keep in mind that the 4100 doesn't use tapes. Instead, it has a Compact Flash slot that supports, well, as much Compact Flash as you can afford. I suspect that the 4-megapixel sensor is actually 4-megapixel this time, instead of the 2-megapixel CCD that's in the SD-card-based PocketDV 4500 that is just interpolated up to 4-megapixel. (Thanks, Mike!)

Where's the Alligator?

Where's the Alligator? 08/18/2004 02:20 PM
It's out there someplace. The NOAA and the Office of Naval Research are about to start searching for the U.S. Navy's first submarine, which went to the bottom of the Atlantic off Cape Hatteras in 1863. Unlike the Confederacy's CSS Hunley, the USS Alligato r never saw action, but it's historically significant nonetheless. Perhaps it can be recovered, as its Rebel cousin was.
