WildFire Credit-Card Sized Linux Board
WildFire Credit-Card Sized Linux Board
02/01/2005 10:04 PMAccording to a LinuxDevices.com
article, Intec
Automation has a new credit-card sized single board
computer, called the WildFire,
with a 64MHz Freescale ColdFire
5282 Version 2 processor. The board includes 2 or 4MB of Flash (plus
another 512KB on-chip Flash), 64KB of SRAM, and 16MB DRAM. The board
is
intended for use with Free Software
development tools like the GNU GCC tool chain and can run uClinux. Of
particular
interest to robot builders will be the
extensive list of I/O. The board has 24 general purpose I/O ports, 7
interrupt or I/O ports, a 16 I/O port timer (plus 4 additional
interrupt
timers and watchdog timer), 8 analog inputs (10 bit, 140KHz), 1 CAN
port, 3 RS-232 serial ports, an LCD/keypad connector, and a 10/100
Ethernet port. It also has a battery-backed clock and has a zero power
hibernation mode. Technical
documentation (PDF format) for all those ports is also available.
The WildFire board is available
now for $199.

ECS RS480-M Motherboard with On-Board
ATi Radeon 9600
04/07/2005 09:22 AM
We don't
normally get down to motherboards around here, mostly because there
are dozens of web sites who live for that sort of thing and could tell
you the difference between a resistor and a capacitor (hint: both
respond poorly to gunfire). The new ECS RS480-M is an exception,
packing the new ATI RS480 chipset, which means that this particular
motherboard has a built-in Radeon 9600-class video card right on the
greenboard. That makes it effectively the fastest on-board video
solution available.
Nvidia has been doing quality chipsets for a while, so it'll be
interesting to see what ATi brings to the table. And since this board
is from ECS, it's won't be that expensive to try out. Plus it has a
PCI Express x16 slot, so when the 9600 starts to show its age in a few
weeks, you'll be able to upgrade easily.

This Wipe Board phone from BT looks pretty cool, but
besides the mention and picture of it on The Red Ferret Journal, I
can't confirm that it actually exists. Nonetheless, unless you want to
purchase one for your very own, it doesn't really need a lot of
explanation. It's a white board with a phone.
It would be especially cool if it lets you draw in your own "Talk"

So It Was The Carriers Who Stopped The
iTunes Phone
So It Was The Carriers Who Stopped The
iTunes Phone
03/25/2005 06:57 AMWhile Motorola's Ed Zander made a
gallant
effort to cover for the wireless carriers by claiming the Motorola
iTunes phone was really delayed due to Apple's marketing strategy,
more and more evidence is appearing suggesting that (as most had
assumed from the beginning) it's
really the wireless carriers who are freaking
out that (oh no!) content might somehow get on phones without
them getting a cut. This is the classic walled garden mindset
of the carriers, and it's exactly what's going to drag them down.
While the carriers
want to
pretend they're music moguls and make sure their hand is one of
many in the tiny pie, others are working on ways to
route around
the carriers. The more complicated the carriers make it, the more
it's just going to push users to find other solutions, and then the
carriers will be guaranteed not to get a cut at all. Their best bet
is to embrace the offerings that are coming along as a way to sell
more phones and more service. Stop worrying about getting their few
pennies for each song. Even if they got it, it wouldn't last long.
Once again, the carriers are showing that they've learned nothing from
the internet.
