Processor upgrade gives older PCI-based
Power Macs 1GHz speeds
01/06/2005 12:23 PM
PowerLogix and Other World Computing (OWC) today announced the PowerForce 750GX G3 processor upgrade for original PCI-based Apple Power Macintosh computers. The 1.0 Gigahertz (GHz) PCI 750GX is the latest addition to the PowerForce G3 processor line. It operates at 1GHz and includes 1.0 Megabytes (MB) of L2 cache, also running at 1GHz. The PowerForce 750GX utilizes the 20x bus multiplier of the IBM PowerPC 750GX processor to allow older PCI-based Power Macs to reach 1GHz speeds. "The PowerForce 750GX allows older Power Macs to operate at modern CPU (central processing unit) speeds, extending the life of these machines at minimal expense," said Larry O'Connor, president of OWC. "And not only can users of the original PCI-based Macs now work faster and more effectively than ever, since the card is compatible with Mac OS 8.6 and higher, they'll also have the added benefit of using the operating system of their choice. This includes Mac OS X, which is simply phenomenal, especially when used with OWC's XPostFacto." The PowerForce 750GX is compatible with the 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500 and 9600 models, as well as select Power Computing and Umax clones. It alsos include a built-in fan sink to provide necessary CPU cooling, fail-safe protection circuitry (in case the card is not fully plugged into the motherboard CPU slot), CPU Director software for adjusting speeds on the fly and compatibility with add-on PCI cards.

NW-E75.jpg imageSony announced two new flash Memory MP3 players that look not unlike tiny music gas cans, the NW-E75 (256MB) and the NW-E95 (512MB). Both have an impressive playback time of about 70 hours from their rechargeable batteries and look to be able to record to memory, as well. The NW-E75 comes in three colors, red, white, and blue, while the higher-capacity NW-E95 comes only in black (and are both the same size, but I left the images in their native resolution so you could get a better look). Looks like these will likely be Japan-only, for now.

iRiver is pushing it's new N10 flash memory player as jewelry, and while it's not the first company to market a wearable MP3 player, they might be the first to do it with any measure of success (an attractive ad campaign goes a long way). That said, they're far from being the only ones to market their product as something for the finest of women to wear. Flamino, whose line of flash memory players have been out for a couple of months, has started a campaign of their own featuring a lounging woman fetishizing their players, as well.

Both these new players look fine, too, as far as flash players are concerned, with MP3 and WMA support, simple displays, and USB 1.1 interfaces. Actually, now that I think about it, that's sort of wimpy. The main difference between the two models is that the EMP-110 has an integrated USB port, like a flash memory key drive, while the EMP-100 requires a separate cable. I4U has an EMP-100 in their review queue -- expect to see that soon.

When Apple's iPod burst onto the scene, many people who previously hadn't thought about buying an MP3 player snapped to attention. Flash-memory–based players had been fairly inexpensive but very frustrating to use with Macs. Now the hard-drive–based iPod and iPod mini are the best-selling MP3 players on the market. Given this new context, we decided it was time to look at the alternatives, for people who are on a tight budget and who just want to use a player at the gym or during a commute, and not for storing a huge music collection.

Flash-based iPod days away

Flash-based iPod days away 01/06/2005 02:35 AM
Thanks to jerry for the heads up in BPN.

Apple's long-rumored flash-based iPod will be introduced at Macworld Expo in 1GB and likely 2GB versions, Apple enthusiast website Think Secret has confirmed. Various details regarding the device have emerged days before Apple CEO Steve Jobs is set to unveil the tiny music player during his keynote address.

Rapidly falling flash prices have enabled Apple to buy 1GB modules from Samsung at a relatively low cost, sources report, which in turn will allow Apple to sell the device for $149. Sources have also suggested that a 2GB version, packing two tiny 1GB flash modules, may sell for $199.

The device is currently being manufactured by Taiwain-based Asustek, which Apple brought on towards the end of the summer as a second ODM for manufacturing iPods. Sources say the flash-based iPod will be powered by a chipset from SigmaTel and that it will feature a screen that is the same width as the iPod mini's but two lines shorter.

Not certain at this point is what sort of touch-based interface the device will use. Some sources have suggested that device will forgo Apple's ClickWheel, featured on the iPod mini and 4G iPod, and will instead have more buttons, like the first generation iPod.

Nomic World: By the players, for the
players
05/26/2004 03:15 PM
[This is an edited version of the talk I gave last fall at the State of Play conference.] I'm sort of odd-man-out in a Games and Law conference, in that my primary area of inquiry isn't games but social software. Not only am I not a lawyer, I don't even spend most of my time thinking about game problems. I spend my time thinking about software that supports group interaction across a fairly wide range of social patterns. So, instead of working from case law out, which has been a theme here (and here's where I insert the "I am not a lawyer" disclaimer) I'm going to propose a thought experiment looking from the outside in. And I want to pick up on something that Julian [Dibbell] said earlier about game worlds: 'users are the state.' The thought experiment I want to propose is to agree with that sentiment, and to ask "How far can we go in that direction?" Instead of looking for the places where game users are currently suing or fighting one another, forcing the owners of various virtual worlds to deal with these things one crisis at a time, I want to ask the question "What would happen if we wanted to build a world where we maximized the amount of user control? What would that look like?" I'm going to make that argument in three pieces. First, I'm going to do a little background on group structure and the tension between the individual and the group. Then I want to contrast briefly governance in real and virtual worlds. Finally I want to propose a thought experiment on placing control of online spaces in the hands of the users. - More at http://www.shirky.com/writings/nomic.html

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash 03/14/2005 06:03 PM

c_flash_dime_bit.jpgPretec Electronics Corporation, apparently unaware that more than eight competing formats already exist in this market, has developed a new flash memory card called the C-Flash. Smaller than a dime, Pretec seems to be gambling on the "hope your customers lose your product and don't learn from their mistakes" business model. Cards with capacities up to 1GB will be available by June, and they're sampling them in mobile phones, which is just about the only place I'd want to see one. Honestly, though, there comes a point (perhaps when you require magnification equipment) when it's just too small. A note to these companies with the perpetual smaller-is-better mentalities: Just because I might one day be able to carry all of my media collection as well as the Library of Congress on a card the size of an eyelash doesn't mean I'll want to, dig?

While on the topic of Flash Memory formats, now seems like a good time to mention LIVEdigitally's Flash Card roundup, wherein they break down the Flash Jungle into small, manageable pieces.

toms_slim_yepp.jpg imageTom's Hardware has an at-first off putting comparison review of the Creative MuVo Slim and Samsung's Yepp YP-T5 where they attempt to contrast the two oddly-shaped flash memory players, but mostly just end up with two separate reviews. Of the two, I definitely prefer the MuVo Slim. It may be twice as heavy and oddly shaped, but you have to admit there is a certain appeal to having 256MB of music stored in a form-factor that shares both the size and shape of a cassette tape. The fact that it uses USB 2.0 just takes it over the top.

I had a great time in Virginia this weekend, although as is typical at a LAN I played videogames for about 2 hours and drank for about 8 each day (not that this is necessarily in error). That being said, I'm glad to be back, so I can talk about things like this update to the Samsung YP-T5 "World's Smallest" YP-T5 flash player, the YP-ST5. Although the form factor is pretty much the same, the battery life has been bumped from 8 hours of playback to 20, USB 2.0 support is in, and an updated firmware (around August or so) will add OGG Vorbis support.

Also, reheated fried calamari has the delicate taste and texture of a cockring. Take the necessary flavor precautions.

Update
07/28/2004 01:20 PM

img_DivX01.jpg imageNow I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but do any of the current movie download services offer their wares in DivX format? Because if not, where exactly does Samsung, when detailing its plans to upgrade some of its DVD player firmware to support DivX, intend its customers to get the files that "can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time?" Surely not the internet. That would be tantamount to murdering film carpenters' entire families.

That aside, DivX firmware updates for Samsung players from the company itself is plus plus. Now if they'd throw in a little XviD flavor we could stream the movies we've already (legally, for honest) ripped. Update: Oh, hey, look at the image that I put up myself. I'm mostly functional! Also, Happy Birthday, Modbuster!
