be headed to Redmond to get a look at a product line. I am going to
refrain from even saying what the product is. Needless to say I have
some experience in the subject matter and would love to get in on the
testing. I have a crazy schedule in October but I will simply have to

The Simplest Thing That Could Possibly
Work
The Simplest Thing That Could Possibly
Work
01/22/2004 02:14 AMCoding up the simplest thing that could possibly work is really
about this: If you can't keep five things in your head at one time and
make a decision, try keeping three things in your head. Try keeping
just one thing in your head, and see if you can make a decision. Then
you can think of the next thing. And amazingly, when you write some of
this dumb, straight-ahead code, it often turns out that it was all
that was required. It works great.
When a second programmer comes back later and reads the code she might
say, "The people who wrote this are morons. They just wrote a simple
linear search here. This thing's ordered, so they could have done a
binary search. They could have used a hash table here. Why are they
doing a linear search?" Well, because a linear search worked.
And when the other programmer looked at the linear search, she
understood it in a minute. -- Ward Cunningham
I couldn't resist this quote. Perhaps the best example of Just Hack I have ever
read.
Opponents of extreme
programming will point out that this example is exactly the
problem with extreme programming - no proper planning,
opportunistic design.

Everything

gaming and says it's A-OK. The MX518 is the new model with the DPI
changing switch on the side, making it easy to flip back and forth
between quick movement with high DPI settings (up to 1600!) down to
the low DPI settings for precision sniping, even without drivers. If
you do install the drivers, though, be prepared to experience
both a wide range of extended features and a bunch of confusing,
not-quite-explained options. Still, it looks a winner for $50, even if
it does look like the Edward James Olmos Edition.

MacMice has updated their 'The Mouse' -- you know,
the one that adds a right click and a scrollwheel to an Applesque
mouse -- now incorporating Bluetooth, to come up with The Mouse BT.
But they're not late to market, no. Instead, they took their
time to "eliminate many of the annoying shortcomings that are present
in earlier BT mice."
You know, I actually saw one of these The Mouses the other day in
person (a corded one, not the Bluetooth model) and they really look a
lot better in person than they do on their website. Something about
their photos makes the acrylic shell look rough, but it really isn't
when you actually see it.

Tom's Hardware has an almost
painfully in-depth profile of a handful of new mice from Logitech,
including the corded MX510 "performance mouse," covered in a blue
holographic sheen -- designed to appeal to the gaming crowd with its
light weight and quick response -- and the 'Click' series [pictured],
a new line of cordless mice that now include horizontal tilt motion on
the scroll wheels, like the latest mice from Microsoft. Logitech has
always made a good interface puck, and if you'd like to catch a sneak
peak at the insides of their Swiss development laboratories, don't

mice, I pretty much just took care of you.

When Logitech released its recent MX 1000 "Laser
Mouse," I think a lot of use were questioning if it really was any
better than a good ol' LED optical version. The problem is, there
really isn't any benchmark you can use to objectively test it, either,
so when Tom's Hardware says that it's the best mouse they've ever
used, you sort of have to take it with a grain of salt. Not that it
might not be the best mouse ever created, but you'll certainly want to
try one for yourself before dropping $80 on one. The Tom's review,
though, at least let's you know that it's worth considering, so I
thought I'd mention it.
