Passing Interview Triage

Passing Interview Triage

Passing Interview Triage 06/24/2005 09:42 PM

Joe Kraus (JotSpot) write about the three questions he uses to help assess engineers during the interview process. I was glad to see that I had reasonable answers to all three. :-) Do you have a blog? I do. You're reading it. What's your home page? As Joe suggests, I rolled my own a long time ago. It's at http://jeremy.zawodny.com/start-page.html. Feel free to bitch about my choice of search engine. Just remember that I built this page before Firefox existed,...

Triage: MS Jazzercises Photo Management 06/30/2004 02:21 PM

Building on it's planned technologies for Longhorn, Microsoft is developing a new technology called 'Triage' to manage digital photos. It appears they're tagging photos with metadata ala Photoshop Album, but check out this ZDNet Video and take a look at how they're presenting the user interface.

Very slick looking, but will it actually provide an increased value for organizing photos? Someone once told us, "Don't add features that are just cool, they have to be useful too."

It's Like Google Suggest, Only As A Dictionary

“There's been a lot of discussion about Google Suggest, which provides potential words and phrases depending on what you type into the query box. There's a similar tool available using a couple of dictionaries instead of the Web. It's called ObjectGraph Dictionary and it's available at http://www.objectgraph.com/dictionary .

There are two dictionaries being used here; a regular dictionary and FOLDOC (Free On-Line Dictionary of Computing.) The default is regular. I started typing in esuriant and ObjectGraph began cycling through suggestions. the cool thing is that in addition to word listings, the suggestion box also contains definitions. So when you've gotten as far as esuri you'll have four relevant words and their dictionary definitions right there.” [ResearchBuzz]

This kind of feature would be nice in a library catalog, especially for phrase title searches.

Passing On Third Party Emails Officially

Passing On Third Party Emails Officially
Not Defamation
06/09/2004 05:14 PM
Last year, a US Court of Appeals ruled that someone just passing on an email accusing someone else of a crime was not guilty of defamation. While this ruling got plenty of misplaced attention when someone (erroneously) interpreted it to mean blogger s could libel anyone they wanted, it was still an important statement about the liability of third party publishing done online. Now, the US Supreme Court has declined to hear the case, meaning that the Appeals Court ruling stands, and third parties are free of libel or defamation claims for items written by others. While I doubt it will stop people from trying to file lawsuits for third party comments on sites (which we've been threatened with way too many times) at least it gives people a clear ruling they can point to in telling those people to go away.

The latest study on spam trends appears to show that financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam - though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to slow down the amount of spam sent.

Rebecca Blood s tarted a new feature on her site, setting out to interview bloggers about how they got started, why they do what they do, and what others can learn from that. I was lucky enough to be the first one, and she's posted part one of our interview (part two will be posted Friday).

If you also blog, you'll probably find something useful in it. It was good to talk to Rebecca and get into some hearty questions (mostly in part 2). I'm used to doing interviews with reporters writing for a general audience so it was refreshing to get really specific weblog-oriented questions directed at me.

David Pescovitz: Warhol7L is fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld's imprint at art book publishing house Steidl. I was just at the 7L bookshop in Paris and one of the many objects of desire I encountered was Andy Warhol's Interview: 35 Years of Pop, a seven-volume boxed "best of" collection of the magazine's first (and arguably best) decade. Each book has a different theme: The Covers, The Pictures, The Interviews, The Andy Warhol Interviews, The Fashion, The Directors, and The Back of the Book. There's also a facsimile of the entire first issue from 1969 and the 35th anniversary issue published in October. The whole shebang weighs 88 pounds, but fortunately Lagerfeld brilliantly outfitted the box with wheels and a handlle. Link

phpBB Interview 02/14/2004 11:51 PM

Interview - James Atkinson , Founder of phpBB: An interesting interview with the guy who started the phpBB project. It's a good look into how a successful open-source project is run.

The biggest thing is to listen to your users. They drive your product forward and they help you support it. Secondly, you have to stick to your ideals. One of the reasons that phpBB is as successful as it is, compared to other "free" forum scripts, is because our project is very stable. We've never changed our name, we've never changed our leadership, and we've never changed our license. We've stuck to the ideals on which we originally founded phpBB, and this approach has given our community the perception that phpBB is strong and stable.

Mario and Zelda Big Band: NES music with
Latin beats and Japanese lyrics
06/19/2004 01:25 AM
Someone just posted a track by the "Mario and Zelda Big Band" on a private file-sharing site I'm on. This is a Japanese big band fronted by a singer whose delivery reminds me of the frontwoman for Orquesta De La Luz (my favorite Japanese salsa band), and backed by a huge horn and winds section. They've got a CD of a live performance of music from classic Nintendo games, with invented Japanese words and super tight Latin jazz melodies. I've just ordered the scorchingly expensive CD and while I wait for it to arrive, I guess I'll just keep this one track in heavy rotation. It's fantastic. Link

Latin Americans

Greetings from beautiful Quito, Ecuador at an elevation of 9000'.  Quito has its advantages over the U.S., notably the ease of connecting to the Internet (cybercafe on every block) and the low prices (haircut and lunch in the nicest part of downtown for less than $10 total).  After a stopover in Miami, however, I'm not sure that one needs to leave the U.S. in order to visit Latin America.

In 24 hours in Miami, most of which was spent with my cousin Jennifer, I met people from Columbia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Venezuela, and probably a few more countries.  A trip onto the highways reveals the driving style of every Latin American country on display as every driver tends to follow the rules of whatever country he or she is from (sadly this results in an average of more than 10 serious accidents every day and a lot of snarled traffic).
