Business 2.0 reports that Vivato has run through most of its money without selling much product [subscription required]: Matt Maier discloses a number of facts about Vivato, the high-flying antenna/switch company with the phased-array system that could span kilometers of open-source or entire floors of buildings. The initial antenna is apparently no longer in production, and it had only 50 customers and $3 million in revenue last year. Maier reports that the company has burned through most of its money and lost or let go many staffers at all levels of the company. A new CEO, interim since October and now fully in charge, plans to slash research and development in favor of less-cutting edge products. Maier concludes that Vivato is finally planning to launch its follow-up product in February: a switch based on the faster 802.11g standard. If it fails, Vivato isn't likely to get another chance....

It's Wednesday, and that means it's time for the weekly reminder that I'll be appearing at the Acme Comedy Theatre tonight for What's My Line? Live on Stage! As always, the show starts at 8, and more details can be found at j.keith.net, including a two-for-one discount.

This is the last show we're doing for this season, so if you've been putting it off, tonight would be a good time to come out and see us. You could try to come out next week, I suppose, but the show will be 95% - 100% less funny. Your personal funny will vary according to how willing you are to stare at an empty theatre.

Thanks to a TON of writing, the restarting of my exercise program, and a melatonin, I've actually slept straight through the last two nights, and I haven't woken with the headache and stiff neck. While it doesn't sound quite as fun as PacManhattan, Nike seems to be getting into the spirit of real world/wireless games by coming up with an advertising campaign that will send SMS text messages to mobile phones telling them where they can find a particular poster. When they arrive at the post, they're told to submit the special code on the poster back to Nike. Players get points for both the number of posters they find and the speed with which they get to them. If they "win" they get a chance to "pre-buy" a pair of new Nike sneakers. Winners get the chance to buy something? Doesn't seem like much of a win to me, but maybe I'm just holding out for those smarter sneakers. Also, to be honest, this game doesn't sound like much fun. It sounds sort of like a mobile version of "fetch." They tell you where to go, you go, and you retrieve a code and send it back to them. Where's the challenge?

So much for hype: Becky Waring gets to the heart of performance in 802.11g gateways with proprietary speed boosting extensions in PC World: Waring performs real-world tests of units from D-Link (Super G), Buffalo (AfterBurner), and Cisco (SpeedBooster). She saw no interference between Atheros's Super G technology and Broadcom's AfterBurner. All three units produce throughput in the 22 to 24 Mbps range in her testing, versus about 18 Mbps for plain G. The top of the range offers significant improvement -- 33 percent--but it may still not be enough to warrant spending a few more dollars for....

PCMag checks in with a mostly positive review of the Archos AV420 Pocket Video Recorder, marred only by the public acknowledgement that the only DVD they could find in John Dvorak's office was a well-worn copy of Top Gun. I mean, they don't say that, exactly, but I think we can all safely infer from the picture that most of his columns are written with the Ride Into The Danger Zone scene playing over and over in the background.

I'm sure that many of you have had poor experiences when participating to phone or video conferences. Now, a new video conferencing interface, named Facetop, improves the level of collaboration by blending transparent images of the user filmed by a video camera on the computer display. This results in a 'ghost' image of the user on the screen. When he points at something, "his video reflection appears to touch objects on the screen."

The computer scientists also developed a two-user version in which the 'ghost' images of the two users appear side by side. Both can alternatively take control of the desktop, again allowing a better collaboration. You can expect a Mac version within months and a Windows version in two years.
