Mark Frauenfelder:
Spencer sez: Tognazzini has a
great column up from July about what he calls "The Worst Interface
Ever":
For $1500, you can equip your luxury car with a genuine
self-destruct switch. Once its in place, you must remember to
flip it whenever you shift from driving your car to not driving your
car. Forget once or do it wrong, and your engine and transmission will
self-destruct.
Ah, a fictitious switch, you say, but no, it is all too
real and all too destructive.
The switch is hidden under the hood, where you cannot visually
inspect it. To increase the sport, it's not only left unlabeled as to
function, its two positions are unlabeled, too -- make a mistake
and, boom!, no more engine.

new weblogs every day, not counting the 1.2 Million weblogs we already
are tracking. That means that on average, a brand new weblog is
created every 11 seconds. We're also seeing about 100,000 weblogs
update every day as well, which means that on average, a weblog is
updated every 0.86 seconds. Every 0.86 seconds?? Man, I'm really going
to have to step up my pace! (Thanks, Dave, for providing such an
outstanding service to us all.)...

07/08/2004 08:26 PMToday it was announced that a vulnerability in the Mozilla and Firefox
Web browsers allows the execution of arbitrary code in Windows NT,
2000, and XP systems. It doesn't affect GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris or
anything else -- just Windows. I'd imagine that Microsoft's head
honchos will be mentioning this exploit whenever they want to attack
open source software security for years to come. Ironically OSS
advocates might use the same story to attack Microsoft's security
record. Why? Because a patch was released before the vulnerability was
widely reported.

Some of you probably have seen this my wife showed me this video
that has been going
around among Korean-American mothers: a Chinese video showing how
to fold a T-shirt in 2 seconds. The technique works for
long sleeve shirts
too but takes a couple of seconds longer. Although I am
pretty much a typical
male chauvinist pig when it comes to house chores, this video was
so amazing it actually
made me want to fold some T-shirts! Wow.

09/09/2004 06:55 AM
I feel kind of stupid, but Itronix actually told
me about their new GoBook III here about a week ago, and I kept
putting it off. Easily remedied, though, and gladly, because this ugly
fucker actually hides a really nice laptop - Pentium M 1.8 GHz, Ati
Radeon Mobility, all that good modular radio stuff - inside the
typically ruggedized Itronix case. That's notable if only because most
rugged laptops, having to go through an extra round of product
development to receive a thorough entoughening usually end up
being real clunkers by the time they get into the hands of police
officers or soldiers or samurai accountants or whatever.
But wow, is that ugly! It looks like Voltron's
underwear.

Great PDA
06/28/2004 09:35 PM
It catches eyes, that's for
sure. I had forgotten to load the Sony VAIO U50 with any software
before our flight home to Kansas City for the weekend, but since an
unexpected storm front was blowing in from the north, we had almost
two hours to kill while our plane sat, stranded on the tarmac of
LaGuardia. Even scrolling through empty file systems was better than
the airline magazine.
"Excuse me," said the man sitting next to me, and I turned too fast
to respond, because I knew he had been staring. "What exactly
is that thing, and can you play Spider Solitaire on it?"
