Of all the personal computers to be unwrapped during the holiday season, more than 80 percent will be used to go online and search the Web's more than 92 million gigabytes of data (comparable to a 2 billion-volume encyclopedia). Getting online is the easy part, finding a useful Web page is a bit harder—keeping track of a useful Web page is another issue altogether.

People have devised many tricks—such as sending e-mails to themselves or jotting on sticky notes—for keeping track of Web pages, but William Jones and Harry Bruce at the University of Washington's Information School and Susan Dumais of Microsoft Research have found that often people don't use any of them when it comes time to revisit a Web page. Instead, they rely on their ability to find the Web page all over again.

Wi-Fi's Success is HomePlug Success 09/17/2004 12:24 PM
Leaders of the power line networking space say that Wi-Fi's success in the home helps the power line networking industry: A spokesman for Intellon, which makes power line networking chips, says that the dead spots that result from many Wi-Fi networks in homes create an opportunity for power line networking, which can be used for network access in the dead zones. HomePlug, the alliance of power line networking companies, is also hoping to get ahead of its networking competition with a new standard it is working on that will be fast enough to support high-definition TV....

Stupid hotspot connection processes

Stupid hotspot connection processes 02/10/2004 02:47 AM
I tried to check my email during a stopover in Frankfurt from the Luftansa lounge.  Good news -- they have a Vodaphone WiFi hotspot.  But there's one problem.  Signing up to connect to the Hotspot requires that you receive a password on your mobile phone via SMS.  My Sprint PCS phone doesn't work in Europe.  Adding insult to injury, none of the landline phones here in the lounge allow outgoing toll-free calls.  So I can't even reach the Vodaphone help line to see if there's another way to log in.

I can understand the convenience of SMS, but why should connecting your laptop to a WiFi hotspot need to involve a text message to your mobile phone?  Doing the security over the Net via SSL seems perfectly acceptable, as it is for virtually all online purchases.  It's as though a catalog retailer told me to go respond to an email in order to accept my credit card over the phone.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait until I get to Helsinki to connect (and to upload this post!).

The big news last week wasn't that Microsoft released a spate of (actually, four) security patches - it was, after all, the first Tuesday of the month, the day designated for patch release. The big news was in the form of a "good news - bad news" situation.

06/18/2004 03:24 AM
Developer Belle Nuit Montage has released Imagefilter, an application that batch processes sequences of images. You can use it to build process trees and add branches that import images, apply color correction to them, lay filters over them, add effects and more. You can import images from QuickTime movies, PDFs, or many of the most popular formats as well as import text files that can be merged with your graphics. Imagefilter defines its projects as XML files, allowing them to be automated for production purposes. You can download a demo, limited to 512 x 384-pixel output, from the Belle Nuit Montage Web site. Licenses are US$120 each, or $600 for a site, and system requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2 or higher and a G4 or G5 processor.

There are lots of bright people out

Congrats to Roland and Boris and.....

They've just launched Bryght - a Drupal hosting service. I hung out with these guys a bit when I was in Vancouver and they're certainly a compelling reason for moving there.

Vancouver is hot.

Here's Roland's post....

Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this one. Yes, we are all Bryght guys :-) !

We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required, no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght site, please contact us.

Whither StreamLine you might ask? StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging platform.

[etech] People-to-People (Microsoft) 02/11/2004 09:36 PM
Lily Cheng from Microsoft Research is talking about how people represent themselves on line. The closer the friends, the fuzzier they want the representations. We need to make social tools fluid enough to account for the way people's lives change. We need easy access to friends and people important to us. We want sponatenous interactions. Lily's group went to a mall and asked people to draw their social interactions, and gots lots of circles and lines. Microsoft studied this and built a "personal map" that clusters people based on who they send email to (TO and CC) and how...
