Dock Ellis, psychedelic pitcher

Dock Ellis, psychedelic pitcher 06/24/2005 06:50 PM

David Pescovitz: During the late 1980s in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, there was a cool band called Dock Ellis. Their music was good but I liked their name even better. Dock Ellis was a player for the Pittsburgh Pirates who in 1970 pitched a no-hitter while tripping balls on LSD. The Dallas Observer just profiled Ellis and retold the psychedelic sports tale of the century:

Dock Ellis Thirty-five years ago, on June 12, 1970, Pittsburgh Pirate and future Texas Rangers pitcher Dock Ellis found himself in the Los Angeles home of a childhood friend named Al Rambo. Two days earlier, he'd flown with the Pirates to San Diego for a four-game series with the Padres. He immediately rented a car and drove to L.A. to see Rambo and his girlfriend Mitzi. The next 12 hours were a fog of conversation, screwdrivers, marijuana, and, for Ellis, amphetamines. He went to sleep in the early morning, woke up sometime after noon and immediately took a dose of Purple Haze acid. Ellis would frequently drop acid on off days and weekends; he had a room in his basement christened "The Dungeon," in which he'd lock himself and listen to Jimi Hendrix or Iron Butterfly "for days."

A bit later, how long exactly he can't recall, he came across Mitzi flipping through a newspaper. She scanned for a moment, then noticed something.

"Dock," she said. "You're supposed to pitch today."

Ellis focused his mind. No. Friday. He wasn't pitching until Friday. He was sure.

"Baby," she replied. "It is Friday. You slept through Thursday."

What's In Your Gadget Bag, Warren Ellis?

What's In Your Gadget Bag, Warren Ellis? 08/31/2004 07:44 AM

warren_ellis.jpg imageWarren Ellis single-handedly reignited my love of funny books with his seminal not-near-enough-future comic Transmetropolitan. Does he need any more introduction than that? Currently working on a novel (without pretty pictures!) and the conversion of the Global Frequency books into a TV series, Warren dashed out his choices for what he includes in his Gadget Bag in typical style:

You just caught me. I'm off to Atlanta in 36 hours or so; jumping from British Summer Time to Eastern Daylight Time for something called Dragon*Con, where I'm a special guest (and also cultivating the Freak Vote in prep for my first prose novel, published next summer).

I travel light. I'm the guy whose bag hits the luggage carousel last. I'm the guy who's still there at three in the morning in an empty hall, with tumbleweed blowing past, sitting there next to horse skeletons and starving vultures, waiting for the airport workers to finish their smack break and grub around in the back of the airplane for my bag. Which usually comes out looking like they've been having group sex on it. So, five or six years ago, I decided that if it didn't fit into a carry-on bag, I wasn't taking it.

Warren Ellis on Orkut

Warren Ellis on Orkut 01/26/2004 02:57 PM
Orkut, the recently-launched, Google-affiliated FOAF (Cory critiques them -- and the bigger FOAF picture -- here), is offline for a while. Before the temporary beta outage, Warren Ellis logged on, sniffed around, then said:
Right now, it looks pretty much like an iteration of the Tribe.net system, with an eye on Friendster's apparent main function as a dating system. (Which means, oddly, it requests your business profile at the same time as it's asking you where you like to be fingered.) (...) It's faster than Fuckster and Tribe, but it shows that all these friend-of-a-friend things have really hit a wall. I mean, what can you actually do aside from invite all your friends and piss about on a couple of small message boards? Message boards that, unlike Tribe, allow anonymous postings and therefore devalue the message board experience? What happens after that? After you've gotten all your friends in -- whom you send email to or IM regularly in any case, presumably. That's it. All done. Until, I guess, yet another social network system opens and you start all over again.

These things want to be a hub for your Internet community experience, but they're just not necessary enough. Tribe gets closest, but it's nothing you're going to leave as an open window on your desktop all day. The first new social network system that builds an IM program into its structure may have a shot. The Delphiforums message boards have Jabber tacked on to them, which would have been brilliant when Delphi was at its height, but has gone pretty much unnoticed in the wake of their self-mutilating half-smart attempts to monetise. The idea was and is sound. The minute you make these things the easiest and most direct way to communicate with the personal network the system's let you build or collate, there's going to be a reason to keep the site on your desktop. And that has to be their goal. I mean, who builds a social network system that doesn't want people to use it all the time?

Author and blogger Warren Ellis shot this phonecam snap with a Nokia 3650, then opined aloud:
"What I just clicked into is that futurephones are very good for the micro, and that weird impressionistic smudging and the odd focal length creates its own suite of weird effects.

This was made by touching the phone's top down on some gravel on the edge of a puddle in a back alley.

The photo is upside down -- if you look closely at the top half of the picture, you can just make out the stones underwater in the puddle.

I am oddly pleased with this little picture."

Make Use Of The Dock 06/12/2004 12:37 PM
The Apple's Dock is not Windows' taskbar.
We are coming up to version 4 of Mac OS X soon, and yet, very little applications take advantage of the dock.
Application icons should reflect useful information in the dock. For example, an FTP application should show the status of the connection. Speaking as someone who always forget to close FTP connections, I will appreciate having easily informed on whether the connection is still opened, and whether there are still uploading or downloading activities going on.
Document icons should help the users to differentiate between different documents -- don't just stick a generic icon in there, and expect the user to scrub through the list to find the document he want.

Onkyo RI Dock For iPod

Onkyo RI Dock For iPod 04/12/2005 11:31 AM

onkyo_ipod.jpg imageOnkyo announced the "RI Dock" for linking iPod to Onkyo components. You'll need Onkyo stereo equipment with an "RI" port to support this, but when you connect the RI cable and analog audio cables to the receiver, you can control the iPod with your receiver's remote. Onkyo was specific with how far this support goes, too: your normal range of volume and playback controls are supported, as well as some advanced features such as timer play, sleep timer, playlists, and the iPod's alarm function (which will automatically turn on the Onkyo equipment and start blasting Tina Turner at 6 AM). Hell, it even has an S-Video port for displaying slideshows from the iPod photo on your TV. At 8,400 yen, it seems like a decent investment for 30 people in the world who own both iPod and Onkyo receiver.

06/22/2004 10:32 AM
Gideon Softworks Inc. has released Dock-It 2.0, an upgrade to its multifunctional launcher, extra Dock creator and Finder enhancer. The new version features support for Mac OS X docklings as well as changing the label size, fixes bugs and adds performance enhancements. It also comes with Clock, Clipping, Shelf Space and Preferences applets that add a digital clock to all your docks, create a spot to store URL clippings and cut text and images, store dragged items so that they can be dropped to another spot in the Finder and offer quick access to all your System Preferences. Dock-It 2.0 can be downloaded as a 7-day demo and costs US$10 for the full version, with upgrades from version 1.x available for $6. It runs in Mac OS X v10.2.x or higher; the developer told MacCentral that it may run in v10.1 but hasn't been tested in that OS.

Call my dock clone Ishmael 12/04/2003 08:19 PM

Just a quick update to my earlier post on cleaning up the clutter of windows and making my PC and mac more inline with each other: Mobydock is an incredible little app that does a much better job replacing the windows taskbar than the earlier app I was using. I've been able to get cool new features, customize it to my programs and liking, and it works great for switching apps by clicking on their dock items (here's a screenshot). It's freeware on top of all that, though I'd gladly pay for them to keep updating it.

The previous dock clone I was using got shut down by Apple, and I'm not sure this one is much different, but it works great for me now.

Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock Plus with
Bluetooth for Cameraphones
08/03/2004 10:50 AM

EASYSHARE_PRINTERDOCKPLUS.jpg imageI don't normally talk too much about printers -- even the cute little photoprinters that all the kids are using these days -- but Kodak's new EasyShare Printer Dock Plus (Original edit: EasyShire - the world's leading hobbit porn site) has a neat trick: after purchasing the optional Bluetooth dongle (available in October), you'll be able to print pictures directly from your cameraphone. I've seen similar tricks done in software, but it's about time companies started acknowledging that cameraphones are going to be more and more prevalent in home photography.

I bet by this time next year, all photoprinters will have the same feature (and it won't be an extra option, either).

05/05/2004 12:29 PM
Eastman Kodak Co. has unveiled a new redesigned printer dock and three new digital cameras -- DX7440, CX7530 and CX7330 -- in its EasyShare line. The new printer dock incorporates Pictbridge technology that makes it compatible with other brands of cameras; its multi-function connector works with EasyShare 600/6000 and 700/7000 series digital cameras. It produces 4 x 6-inch full-size and multi-image picture sheets with its thermal printing system and can transfer pictures to a computer as well as recharge your camera's battery. Minimum system requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2.3. You'll be able to find the new printer dock on store shelves in June for US$149. Kodak's Web site lists July availability, but the company confirmed with MacCentral that most retailers will have it in June.

Kodak has introduced the Printer Dock Plus, which can wirelessly accept pictures from a cell phone with its built-in infrared capability as well as connect to your computer via a USB port for printing, and a new EasyShare camera, CX 7525, a 5 megapixel model with 3x optical/5x digital zoom, nine scene and color modes, the ability to capture MPEG-4 video clips at VGA (640 x 480, 13fps) or QVGA (320 x 240, 20fps) resolution and more. Printer Dock Plus (US$199.99) offers a one-touch auto-enhance feature that brightens pictures before printing, a built-in reader for SD/MMC memory cards and compatibility with PictBridge-enabled cameras, with the ability to charge their batteries while connected. An optional 8-in-1 Kodak card reader expands the types of memory cards it accepts. The new printer dock works with Mac OS X v10.2 or higher and requires 128MB RAM and 200MB hard drive space; it will be available in September.

Undead at CTIA: Kodak EasyShare-one

Undead at CTIA: Kodak EasyShare-one 03/17/2005 03:51 AM

easyshare_one.jpgI couldn't figure out why Kodak wanted us down at CTIA in the first place, but that's probably because we missed the introduction of the Kodak EasyShare-one at CES. They're still not ready to launch the product (three to four months, they say), but it does hold some promise. The idea is simple: take four-megapixel pictures, edit them on the camera with touch screen and stylus, and then send them out over the Wi-Fi SD card. The problem is, it uses Ofoto (Kodak's image hosting service) for everything, even routing email through the service. I understand the decision, but it makes the camera come off less as an innovation and more like an extension of the brand. It's also a bit weird that the Wi-Fi has to use an SD-Card instead of just being built-in.

If Kodak would let you configure your own photo hosting service of choice (Flickr/.Mac/self-hosted FTP), it would be a lot more exciting.
