Cory Doctorow: The Queen met with Howard Stringer, the new CEO of Sony, and told him off for designing remotes that are too hard to use:

According to Stringer the Queen told him: "I have a lot of trouble with your remote controls. Too many arrows."

Queen Elizabeth Pooh-Poohs Sony Remotes

Queen Elizabeth Pooh-Poohs Sony Remotes 06/24/2005 04:03 PM

qeiipod.jpgWow, Sony can't catch a break. First the Queen of England buys an iPod mini. Then, at a luncheon with new Sony CEO Howard Stringer—a known Englishman Welshman (Welsh, English, whatev! Don't make us bomb you.)—the Queen chided him for making products that are difficult to use. "I have a lot of trouble with your remote controls," she's quoted. "Too many arrows."

What Queen Elizabeth II neglected to admit, however, is that due to the long history of in-marriage in the Hapsburg line, she has only a single lobster claw at the tip of each arm.

Sony Pocket Bit Pro, 2GB USB Hard Drive

Sony Pocket Bit Pro, 2GB USB Hard Drive 06/21/2004 09:06 AM

pocketbitpro.jpg imageI could have sworn we already mentioned this, but the Oracle of Search says otherwise. Apparently, Sony's getting into the "mini hard drive masquerading as USB flash drive" game with their new Pocket Bit Pro USD-2G, a simple-enough little device that differentiates itself from the crowd mostly by its automatic data synchronization feature. By pressing the AutoSync button on the drive (you might want to plug it into the computer first), the Pocket Bit Pro will back up pre-selected folders and sub-folders, saving versions (as space allows) up to ten generations back. Pretty slick stuff, but you'll pay the Sony premium for the convenience -- the Pocket Bit Pro will retail for over $300 when it ships in July.

It's Hard To Commit: Apple Or Sony?

It's Hard To Commit: Apple Or Sony? 08/07/2004 01:36 AM
I'm not placing bets on the long-term victor. Apple has floundered too many times in its history to be counted on, even now. And Sony could succeed, somewhat like Microsoft, on sheer size and momentum. By Victoria Shannon, International Herald Tribune (via MyAppleMenu)

Another Hard Disk Sony Video Player?

Another Hard Disk Sony Video Player? 08/02/2004 10:25 AM

nextsonyhdd1.jpg imageSo there's stink about this one possibly being a fake, but there's a new Sony hard disk-based video player on Japanese website CD Report that claims to have a 20GB hard drive crammed into a unit just a hair bigger than the iPod mini (hence, the fake rumors). If it is legit, it is supposed to be released sometime around Christmas for a price in the neighborhood of $450 - not a bad price if it ends up being the real deal.

Of course, Sony learned from the HMP-A1 that people might actually like players that could support native MP3 playback, so the new unit is rumored to have only ATRAC support (that means, basically, that this thing will be a dud as a music player).

Update: Okay, we're talking fake here. Babelfish failed me and the intern is probably curled up in a nest of barely-legal college hotties. At least he better be.

Disk Player?
06/23/2004 10:52 AM

Item! I have it on good word that Sony is planning on launching another hard drive-based music player, called the Sony NW-HD1. It's all rumor at this point, of course, but according to my source it will be branded under the Walkman name and has "far better styling than the Vaio offer." Sony is apparently shopping it around to various outlets now to see what people think in preparation of an autumn launch. If anyone can grab me a picture of this mythical new unit, I would bake you the most delicious cupcake man has ever baked. Developing!

Sony Corp. has unveiled its first hard-disk drive-based digital music player to bear the Walkman name. The device was launched on Thursday as the Walkman brand marked its 25th anniversary. The NW-HD1 features a 20GB hard-disk drive and is, according to the company, the smallest music player at this capacity. It measures 89 millimeters by 62.1 millimeters by 13.8 millimeters and weighs 110 grams. The capacity is half that of Apple Computer Inc.'s highest capacity iPod, but Sony says its player trumps Apple's in terms of the number of songs it can store: 13,000 on the Walkman versus 10,000 on the iPod.

Important safey tip--rsync is useless for any file with a resource fork, including all OS 9 apps, many (if not all) Carbon apps, and a goodly number of data and system files) I'm finally up and running. It's kind of amazing how many update passes the damned thing...

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,
Including Sony T3 (Rawr!)
08/30/2004 09:56 AM

Sony_DSC-T3.jpg imageGott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar 4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a 7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.

The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the day.
