Hidamari No Tami Special Edition
Hidamari No Tami Special Edition
04/19/2005 11:03 AM
In
celebration of selling 3 million units, Tomy will be releasing a
special discounted edition of their "Hidamari no Tami." With a 300 yen
discount, the unit comes to 714 yen (about $7 USD). When trying to
find out what the thing does, I learned that it just sits there and
bobs its head under solar power. I now understand why 2 million units
were sold within Japan, but what about the 1 million units Tomy says
were sold outside of Japan? "Hidamari no Tami" roughly translates as
"Sunshine's People."

Vintage Photo Archives: 4-LOM
11/14/2003 01:20 AMMost vintage collectors will argue to no end that Kenner's vintage
Star Wars line was flawless, but even the most die-hard out there will
agree that the toymaker did mess up once. The mistake in question
deals partially with the
4-LOM action figure.
It seems that the hard working people at Kenner had somehow mixed his
and Zuckuss's names up. As a result, to vintage collectors, today’s
addition to the
Vintage
Photo Archive will always be 4-LOM. But for those of you that read
this column daily, it is, of course, all old news…

Vintage Photo Archives: 8D8
12/15/2003 02:28 AMHow is it that
8D8,
a mute white robot that looks like it belongs on a
Pete
Townsend album cover could be a popular action figure? Well, in
the case of
8D8, there is the whole
Star Wars character
angle, plus like many kids, this guy liked taking out his aggressions
on pool little
Power Droids. So it would seem a no-brainer…
Well, except that today's addition to the
Vintage Photo Archive
wasn’t really a
popular action figure. Chances are, anyone with
hours on their hands (like any toy collector doesn’t have too much of
that) could probably still find a couple of these carded at their
local mom and pop toy store. Hint: Look behind the
Bionic Six
action figures in the discount bin.

Special St. George's Edition Game Boy
Advance
06/25/2004 10:32 AM
I'm slightly surprised there isn't a Stars and
Stripes version out first -- in fact, I feel slightly gipped,
considering how we liberated the Japanese from the British threat back
in WWII -- but it looks like the Brits will be getting their own St.
George's flag on the Game Boy Advance, in a "90 quid" limited edition.
Strangely, my pocket converter doesn't have "quid," so I'm thinking it
probably costs around one million American dollars, or about the price
of the bombs we had to use to flush out those tenacious British
submarines that had infested the Mississippi in the '70s.
The St. George's Cross commemorates the reticle crosshair used by
that camping bastard St. George of Manchester to snipe and kill
General Harry S. Truman during the deathmatch that decided the Korean
conflict. (Thanks, Martin!)

11/04/2003 02:01 AMSure the vintage
2-1B action figure was
Johnny-on-the-spot whenever a farm boy needed to get some serious
plastic surgery or a new bio-mechanic hand, but what has he done for
the Rebellion lately? More than you know pal, more than you'll ever
know! For instance, whom do you think the Rebels turn to on New Year's
Eve for a designated driver? Who do you think shovels the walks on the
Hoth base and scrubs the moss of the Ewok suspension bridges on the
Forest moon of Endor? That's right, the good old medical droid, that's
who. Today’s addition to the
Vintage Photo Archive
doesn't mind much though, since it keeps the Rebels off his precious
collection of medical gurneys.

12/02/2003 12:27 AMEven though he lived in a nice house in a neighbourhood pretty close
to the bright center of the galaxy,
Bib Fortuna got
teased a lot when he was in junior high. As if it isn’t awkward enough
for the poor guy to put up with the challenges of puberty whilst
dealing with the fact that he’d never win any beauty contests, today's
addition to the

begging to be used against him. It’s no wonder the young wallflower
grew up to hang out with smelly do-no-gooders with down right silly
names on the planet furthest from.

Vintage Photo Archives: Ugnaught
10/29/2003 02:20 AMBelieve it or not, the vintage
Ugnaught action
figure was not a peg warmer! Granted the ugly little dudes weren’t the
first to fly off the shelves, but sell they still did. When Kenner’s
Star Wars line was winding down, collectors were tripping over
Endor Leias, and in some regions even Stormtrooper Lukes and Carbonite
Hans, but the short guys with the make up cases were no where to be
found… Granted, he was technically an army builder –even if it was an

10/31/2003 01:41 AMPerhaps the vintage

isn't as exciting as, say, either of the Bespin guards or the Cloud

and that likely had a lot to do with today’s addition to the

fancy shirts he had a proclivity for wearing that Star Wars fans went
nuts for.
