Review: Nikon Coolpix S1 06/24/2005 05:10 PM

The Coolpix S1 lacks some features enthusiasts might expect, but point-and-shooters who need a bit of guidance will like its easy operation and excellent color.

Nikon Coolpix S1 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

coolpix_s1.jpg imageOut of seemingly nowhere emerges the Nikon Coolpix S1, obviously a stab at recent offerings from Casio and Sony (think Exilim and Cybershot T series). But gee whiz, I had no idea a Nikon could look anything like this — it has a 5.1MP CCD and 0.75" thick aluminum body. Estimated at around 45,000 yen, the S1 provides 3x optical zoom, a boatload of photographic features I'm having a hard time translating like "Face Clear Function", a 2.5" monitor and SD memory card slot. Expect to see the S1 available in three colors: Metal Silver, Dolce Black and Cream White.

Nikon announced on Thursday an addition to its line of professional SLR cameras, the D2X, as well as three new Coolpix cameras: the 4800, 8400 and 8800 models. In addition, the company introduced a new lens, the AF-S VR Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED super-telephoto, which is compatible with all of its digital and film SLR cameras. Expected to ship in January 2005, the new lens offers two vibration reduction modes, a focus mode switch for choosing between manual-priority auto-focus and manual focus, a silent wave motor and Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass. No pricing was announced.

Nikon 4 Megapixel Coolpix 4100

Nikon 4 Megapixel Coolpix 4100 05/28/2004 12:44 PM

nikoncp4100-press.jpg imageNikon's got a new Coolpix coming out this summer with a 4-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, 1.6-inch LCD and--in a rare return to early digicam form--14.5MB of internal memory. The Coolpix 4100 will also take SD cards for additional storage and should be price around $300. One thing I love about Nikon is that they tend to release their own underwater housings for their cameras and the 4100 will be getting one, as well. Even though many 3rd party housings are just as good or better, it's usually a lot easier to buy from the manufacturer.

Nikon Coolpix 5900 Reviewed (Verdict:
Good for Newbies)
04/18/2005 08:22 AM

nikon_5900rev.jpgThe Nikon Coolpix 5900 is a step towards the consumer camera of the future. It doesn't offer a lot of finesse, like manual exposure control over aperture and shutter speeds, but it does offer things like 'Face-Priority AF,' (automatic focus on human faces) and D-Lighting (automatic contrast correction). Now they don't always work—the Face-Priority in particular has some problems picking the right face on which to focus—but when they do they can make taking high-quality pictures much easier for people that don't know what they're doing. That said, if you're already a photography champ, the $350 Nikon 5900 is only going to get in your way.

The wireless access combined with software enables wireless remote control from a laptop of the camera. The camera, without the Wi-Fi adapter, is expected to cost a whopping $5,000. The previous version of the camera costs around $3,000 but sold very well to its target professional audience. Nikon not abandoning 35mm -- yet 11/18/2003 12:42 PM
Turned out to be completely untrue, but last week a Japanese newspaper reported that Nikon was planning to kill their line of 35mm compact cameras and go entirely digital. Though you gotta wonder how long it'll be until one of the big manufacturers does decide to exit the consumer 35mm camera business entirely. Can't be more than a year or two. Read...

Nikon D2X, 12.4-Megapixel DSLR 09/16/2004 05:52 AM

nikon_d2x_1 imageNikon has finally announced the successor to their D1X and boy, does it look hot! Called the D2X (surprise!), the defining feature of the new DSLR is a 12.4-megapixel CMOS sensor that can shoot up to five frames per second at its highest resolution, but can also be bumped down to 6.8-megapixel to increase its framerate to 8 per second. In addition, Nikon has updated their Wi-Fi transmitter for the camera; the WT-2 has both 802.11b/g support and "Capture Control," giving you the ability to control the shutter of the camera from a PC or other mobile device.

Nikon D2X & Underwater Housing Reviewed
(Verdict: Awesome)
03/17/2005 03:51 AM

nikon_d2x_housing.jpgWetpixel has a review of both the Nikon D2X 12.4 MP camera and its Subal ND2 underwater housing. The pictures produced by the camera are vibrant and incredibly well-balanced, which you would expect for the $5,000 it costs. Still, reviewer Dr. Alex Mustard says that if you don't need very large output sizes for your shots, you can purchase a Nikon D70 for considerably less that produces rather decent underwater shots. The housing is designed very well and offers excellent ergonomics—an important consideration when on a dive. Dr. Mustard muses "It costs $5,000. And if you fill it up with water, it is worth $0," but goes on to say "in a word, [the D2X] is awesome." Some gorgeous pics accompany the review, so be sure to check them out. (Thanks, Eric!)
