Crazy Reader Email of the Day

Crazy Reader Email of the Day

Crazy Reader Email of the Day 06/24/2005 04:03 PM

After the jump, prepare for a leap in logic that goes from Gizmodo insulting a Queen to a "breakdown in civilizaiton" that leads to "another 'dark ages.'"

What fell mind experiments did the government perform on the Naval Academy Class of '79?

Charles spasms:

I read this column almost every day for over a year. Something about Gizmodo has been irritating me. It think it's your attempt at humor that makes me uncomfortable.

For example, you can't show disrespect for the Queen. The "lobster claw" comment is bad. This is akin to spitting on your wife's grandmother. She's an old lady... what are you thinking? Would you give her a seat on the subway? Probably not. You'd probably sit there listening to your iPod. By the way, iPods and the like are boring because they isolate people from their surroundings and makes them cold and unfeeling to the world around them.

Some institutions in the world, like the church, must stay intact or it causes a breakdown in civilization. There must be a counterbalance that allows some sort of order; if not you get chaos and anarchy. With this comes another "dark ages".

This is irresponsible. You can't do this to the Queen. You're really stupid you know.

You guys suck. It's media reporting like this that makes the U.S. ever increasingly a horrible place to live.

I'm not reading Gizmodo anymore. Good luck, I hope you make a lot of money.

Charles
U.S. Naval Academy, '79

P.S. You guys suck, how can you 'dis an old lady?!

Here's a case where none of the litigants in the patent dispute is the inventor of the patented material. Nice work, USPTO. L ink

Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?

Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
01/17/2004 10:47 PM
The big discussion that I've been having with a few different people over the last few weeks is whether or not Google would get into the email business - and, if so, how? To me, it seems like an obvious extension of their technology and business model - but not everyone agrees. However, the rumors are getting louder and louder that Google is developing an email product. The question is whether they'll be offering an entire "Google Email" system, or if they're just working on a version of their AdSense offering that would work within email (generating contextual ads based on the content of the email). Some people I've spoken to about it thought that people would freak out if they thought Google was reading their email to do its contextualization magic - which could be true. The question is how many people will freak out - and will plenty of others be more than willing to welcome the Google contextualization engine into their inbox, in exchange for the ability to actually "Google your email"? Many people always seem to want the ability to better search through their own email. I could see a certain willingness from many people to let Google place ads in their email in exchange for the ability to better search through all the email. If Google could figure out a good anti-spam solution, as well, it could be a real hit.

For years, SMTP server software was used to send and receive e-mail communications. These older servers, usually freeware, have created many delivery challenges. Most of the time, marketers, CEOs and even CMOs are completely unaware of these issues. The owners of ActivSoftware, in central New York, introduced a worldwide challenge to prove their software system (http://www.activsoftware.com/xms) is one of a kind in the email industry. It doesn't appear you can make them stop sending you email. Worse, it's clear they are a place for "dead wood" faculty who just need a paper count for their yearly reviews. So, recently, the academics have been taking things into their own hands by generating bogus submissions. Some with a sophisticated fake paper generator and others with more direct statements.

Just Plane Crazy 04/13/2005 02:01 AM
"When stewardesses were sexy and the world was sexist" is the tagline of this years-in-making musical by Suzy Conn, who also runs the blogway baby musicals log (which talks about this musical quite a bit). It's meant to be based around the early 1960's, when airlines were truly a luxury, not unlike a sea cruise or a first-class train ride pre-Amtrak. (The website spends some time going on about Braniff International, and it's worth it to check out the history of that airline. This is also laid out on top of the era of Women's Liberation, although it does so using the aesthetic of 1960's music and phraseology, which was, basically, designed by male-dominated hollywood. For everyone who sits in the cheap seats, if you let the flash animation at the beginning of the site load, it plays the entire opening title song for you. Hey, free show!

Crazy Shoppers

Hullut Pivt is the bi-annual sale at Stockmann's Department Store in Helsinki which comes just before Easter in the Spring and and at the end of October in the Autumn. The sale lasts three days and most sane people avoid going near the store until after the madness has subsided. I had the Leica and so I thought I'd try to capture a little bit of the insanity on film by walking around while trying not to be noticed.

Everywhere you look there are yellow banners and menacing looking ghosts. In the US, parents would probably be suing the store for such scary ghosts being displayed when it's not even Halloween. The mannequins get draped in yellow cloth with eyes taped on to look like a flock of really tall trick-or-treaters. Mylar balloon ghosts, employees in costume, people pawing over tables piled with stuff and announcers saying something into a microphone which sounds like you're at the drive-thru window make the whole scene pretty chaotic. I had fun lurking around with the camera and trying to take photos of the better costumes until one rather irate cashier started yelling at me in English and then switched to Finnish because I must have looked so startled she must have thought I didn't understand English. :)

Lots of people claim that there really aren't any deals or good sales during the 3 days of mayhem but I don't think that's really the purpose of the whole show. Shoppers flock to Stockmann's as a good excuse to head into the city, look at some of the random new items the store buys just for the sale and then go to a movie or the theatre. Some shoppers take the event really seriously though, so when you see yellow ghost Stockmann bags downtown, walk away from the store unless you enjoy watching a piranha feeding frenzy. :)

I'm in Geneva, representing EFF at the World Intellectual Property Organization meeting on the unbelie vably misbegotten Broadcast Treaty, an Orwellian masterwork that makes the DMCA look like junior-high playground strong-arming.

The high point (other than working with the amazing coalition of activists that Jamie Love and the Civil Society Coalition have gathered here) was the utterly bizarre self-papering toilets in the WIPO building. I was so taken by these things that I had to shoot a movie -- I knew I could never describe them adequately with words alone. 675k AVI Link
