Japanese Robot Guard

Japanese Robot Guard 06/24/2005 04:03 PM

Guardrobo D1 activate anti-theft device! Guardrobo D1 put out fire! Guardrobo D1 GO! Every couple of days we get a product that just touches our whimsy spot and makes us smile.

genImage.aspx.jpgGuardrobo D1 is a programmable guard robot (Guard+Robot. Get it?) designed to patrol stores and offices in Japan. This pint-sized fellow will relay back camera information, listen for intruders, and can even put out fires. Interestingly enough, they are touting the Guardrobo as a solution for the problem of an aging population. Because 1 in 5 Japanese are 65 or older, they don't have enough strapping young security guards. Therefore, they'll become subservient to demonic robots. "BRING ME OIL, OLD MAN!"

BoingBoing pal du Paris Roland Piquepaille says:
There's a new robot in town who wants to guard your home. This new security robot, which currently has no name, is designed by the Korean company Mostitech and will be distributed starting in June by Korea's top mobile carrier, SK Telecom. With its price tag of only $850, it will be a serious competitor for Banryu, which costs $18,000. The unnamed robot is 50 centimeters tall and weighs only 12 kilograms. In case of emergency, such as a fire, its cameras can take snapshots and send them to the owner's cell phone. Likewise, if an unexpected visitor is entering your home, you'll receive his picture on your phone. It also can entertain your kids by reading them a book. The Korea Times tells us the story while this overview provides some pictures of the cute unnamed robot.

Japanese Robot Supermodel

Japanese Robot Supermodel 03/14/2005 06:03 PM
Okay, don't get too excited, this isn't quite as life-like as you imagined when you saw the headline. Roland Piquepaille sent us this news on Japanese robotics, "A Japanese designer has developed a mannequin robot, Palette, which can adapt its movements to the shoppers passing in front of it, according to an article from Agence France-Presse (AFP), "Striking a robotic pose". Using motion-capture technology, Palette will be able to act as a supermodel. And with its specialized sensors and software, it also will be able to identify the sex and age of shoppers before transmitting them to store owners for marketing purposes. The price has not been set yet, but Palette should go on sale in 2005 in two versions: a body without legs to showcase clothings, and a torso model for jewelry." See Roland's blog for more details and a photo of Palette, a robot which intentionally has no face. Another photo is available in a recent CNET news article.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

Odds are, you haven’t even thought avout it for some time, if ever. That could end up costing you a lot…

Or at least lay on more. Here's the scoop--we need a Perl 6 pumpking, someone to take on the responsibility of making the Perl 6 compiler happen. When we started this whole process these many years ago, we though having one person handle the software end of things was sufficient, but making perl 6 a reality is a much larger task than we'd originally figured, as both Perl 6 the language and Parrot the interpreter have ended up bigger than we'd thought they'd be. Bigger, in fact, than one person can reasonably manage, especially with a volunteer project. Hence, the...

WSC Guard 4.0 Ships: Win 98, ME, free
WPA-PSK
04/07/2005 05:16 PM

Wireless Security Corporation offers version 4: The latest version of their security software now supports Windows 98 and Me in addition to XP and 2000. Better, you can use the software to make WPA Personal (Pre-Shared Key or PSK) connections from all of those platforms without paying WSC a cent. That's right: they've just opened up WPA Personal to the have-nots that Microsoft chose not to support. (It seems there's competition in offering free security software: LucidLink released a free client a few days ago that offers profile and security management for Windows XP and 2000.)

WSC Guard 4.0's larger purpose, however, is to provide an integrated client that works with a remote 802.1X server for Windows 98 and SE, which the company estimates is about 13 percent of all computers worldwide. That's a nice market to tap.

The latest release offers profile management to control which networks are preferred a bit better than Windows XP's support, and to extend profile management to all the platforms now covered. The system now makes it easier for network administrators to allow guests without the WSC Guard client installed and to add new users to an existing WSC Guard subscription more quickly. The software now features automatic updating, too, removing another administrative burden.

WSC Guard pricing derives from simultaneous active users. One to four users cost $4.95 per month per user or $49.99 per year; five and more users are $3.99 per month per user or $44.99 per year.

tmsuk originally made conveyor belts for fishing trawlers, then they switched to making rice balls. Now they're developing robots. The tmsuk home guarding robot, Banryu, first started making news about year ago (you may remember it from some of the photo galleries in our Robodex 2003 coverage). According to a new asahi.com story, Banryu may finally be available for purchase. Roland Piquepaille's weblog contains a number of new photos and more details on Banryu. The 35 kg, 4-legged robot has over 50 sensors and can alert it's owner by cell phone if it detects a fire or an intruder. The cost? 1.98 million yen (about $17,600).

Using GNU Privacy Guard with Mail.app just got a lot better. With the OS X 10.3 upgrade that has rocked a lot of worlds, the nice folks behind GPGMail updated their plugin, which is really just a nice go-between for Mail.app and GPG. The GUI integration has taken a big step forward in this new version, with my wish for a way to select which key you want to encrypt/sign with being granted.
