Why Do People Want To Watch TV On A

Why Do People Want To Watch TV On A
Mobile Phone?
02/19/2004 02:17 PMI've been asking for a while now, why would anyone want to watch TV on
their mobile phones as it
reminds me
of those portable TVs that were (barely) sold in the 80s and never
went anywhere. Add to that, ridiculously slow frame rates, and you
have to wonder why anyone bothers. However, Sprint is claiming that
they have "steady demand" for their MobiTV offering, which lets people
watch TV in slide-show fashion (between 1 and 2 frames per second).
Peter Lewis, from Fortune Magazine, decided to test out the service
and has
a less than kind review of the service. After
using it for a while, he says: "The hard part is answering the
question, Why?" He concludes that the "experience is basically like
watching a tiny, blurry slide show, with lousy sound." Sounds
compelling. However, some people seem to be using it, and as the
technology gets better, Sprint (and others) expect more people to be
staring at their mobile phone screens all the time. I can maybe see
it catching on for live events (sporting events, live reality TV
possibly, major breaking news...) but other than that, I really do
wonder if people will really go for this, or if it's just a fad (like
the portable TVs in the 80s). Especially with the ability of TiVo to
record shows that you want to see when you're out and about, there are
fewer reasons why someone needs to be watching TV right this very
second. Thus, the only remaining use is to kill time while you're
waiting for something - and TV in its 30 minute increments isn't the
greatest solution for trying to kill five minutes.

Do People Want A Mobile Phone Directory?
Do People Want A Mobile Phone Directory?
08/31/2004 03:37 PMThere's been a lot of talk over the last few months about the
potential for a mobile phone directory. Many in the industry have
been pushing for it, though, consumers fear for their privacy.
Already sick of telemarketers on their landlines, they don't want to
start receiving such calls on their mobile phones as well. Those
supporting the directory want to set it up so that you can only
request the number based on a name, rather than get your hands on the
entire directory -- which, in theory, should eliminate the type of
phonebook dialing that many telemarketers engage in. Of course, it
just takes one screwup allowing the directory to get out there, and it
won't matter any more. The other part of the debate has been over
whether such a directory should be opt-in or opt-out. The folks
behind it have done a very odd sort of agreement on this, suggesting
they could make it "opt-in," but that you will
have to pay if
you don't want to be included. In other words, a new fee could simply
start showing up on your bill, and the way to get rid of it, would be
to give out your mobile phone number. The latest in this ongoing
debate is a new study suggesting that
52% of users
would opt-in to such a directory if it had some privacy protection
(just what kind of protection is not described and could make a huge
difference). 11% would opt-in even without privacy protection. Of
course, the study was done by a company who provides consulting
services for the directory assistance industry -- so you have to
imagine they have some bias. A big new directory makes it more likely
someone will hire them.

The COO of 3, a European 3G wireless company, has uttered one of the
stupidest things ever said by a phone company executive
(
there's a field with some stiff competition!). In justifying
his company's decision to censor the Internet services delivered over
its wireless link (they're only allowing customers to access certain,
selected services, rather than providing a fast wireless pipe that
customers can use as they see fit), this loonytune has this to say:
'People don't want open access, that's not what our
customers tell us they want,' he said. 'Anyone in their right mind who
tries to do anything on the Internet with a screen that size has to be
nuts.'

Will Carriers Kill The iTunes Phone?
Will Carriers Kill The iTunes Phone?
07/29/2004 04:48 AMApple (and Motorola) took a lot of people by surprise earlier this
week by announcing
plans to
put iTunes on a mobile phone, but they may have left out one very
important part: figuring out how the carriers get a cut. The wireless
carriers are notorious for
suppo
rting closed systems, and making sure that they get a cut of any
transaction that goes through a mobile phone. While this is a
shortsighted move that has slowed down the creation and adoption of
wireless services and applications, the carriers still insist on
sticking to that plan, under the weird belief that they know best what
applications and services subscribers will use (and pay for). So,
now, many analysts are pointing out that for all the hype surrounding
the mobile iTunes,
there's a good chance carriers won't let it run on
their phones, unless they somehow get a cut. Of course, for the
smart carrier, this is a perfectly good opportunity to open up their
offering. Giving subscribers an open platform with plenty of
applications and services should generate more interest and allow the
carrier to steal customers away from its competitors. Eventually, it
will happen, but it may take a while.

So It Was The Carriers Who Stopped The
iTunes Phone
03/25/2005 06:57 AMWhile Motorola's Ed Zander made a
gallant
effort to cover for the wireless carriers by claiming the Motorola
iTunes phone was really delayed due to Apple's marketing strategy,
more and more evidence is appearing suggesting that (as most had
assumed from the beginning) it's
really the wireless carriers who are freaking
out that (oh no!) content might somehow get on phones without
them getting a cut. This is the classic walled garden mindset
of the carriers, and it's exactly what's going to drag them down.
While the carriers
want to
pretend they're music moguls and make sure their hand is one of
many in the tiny pie, others are working on ways to
route around
the carriers. The more complicated the carriers make it, the more
it's just going to push users to find other solutions, and then the
carriers will be guaranteed not to get a cut at all. Their best bet
is to embrace the offerings that are coming along as a way to sell
more phones and more service. Stop worrying about getting their few
pennies for each song. Even if they got it, it wouldn't last long.
Once again, the carriers are showing that they've learned nothing from
the internet.

Apple Puts iTunes On A Mobile Phone (But
Is There More?)
Apple Puts iTunes On A Mobile Phone (But
Is There More?)
07/26/2004 11:16 PMSneaking this in towards the end of the day, Apple and Motorola have
announced plans for
Apple to put a "slimmed down" version of iTunes on a
Motorola phone that will be sold next year. It's not quite an
iPhone, as it will really just be like similar MP3 playing phones,
with fairly limited storage. In fact, some may wonder why Apple would
even bother, since the whole point of iTunes is
to sell
more iPods. You could make the argument that having iTunes on a
mobile phone might make someone more willing to buy an iPod also, but
it's a stretch. A more intriguing conspiracy theory would be that
this is simply "step 1" in a relationship between Motorola and Apple
to build wireless iPods, where they roll this offering out to test the
partnership, and then work on a wireless iPod secretly in the
background.
