Tiny, USB Lava Lamp

Tiny, USB Lava Lamp 06/24/2005 04:01 PM

mini_lavalamp.jpgInside of all of us, there is a tiny, tie-dye-wearing Assembler demo coder waiting to shine. Don't let him out—he'll only make a couple of cool 65k demos before deciding what he really wants to be is a four-track MOD DJ, spreading the healing power that a danceable remix of the Airwolf theme provides.

Instead, keep him deep inside your brain, appeased by the random number generator of the random lovers generation, the Lava Lamp. This new model available on Thinkgeek is not only powered by USB, but is only ten bucks.

Lava Vader Details

Lava Vader Details 03/25/2005 12:46 PM
Here are a few details on Target's exclusive "Lava Vader" from "Metalzombie". I work for a Target DC, and on Sunday we had about four skid loads of the Target exclusive Darth Vader's roll in. My buddy and me popped a case open, and they look incredibly sweet. They come packaged in a clear plastic case, like the vintage OTC ones, with Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith on the back. The bottom says Target Exclusive, with a red picture of Vader to the left, and the sticker across the top simply says "Darth Vader".

Tiny tiny 4GB hard drive 04/09/2004 04:11 PM
So you thought the 4GB IBM/Hitachi micro drives as used in the iPod mini are small? Toshiba is making a 4GB drive that is only 2.1cm (0.85 inch) in diameter. (via Macminute) Less than 10 years ago when I had my BBS and FidoNet hub "the Source!" (spelled that way) I had a much bigger disk with much less capacity that imploded. Henrik Jørgensen came to the rescue, lending me a 4GB scsi disk and a scsi controller so I...

Sizes up to 1GB will be available, as well as the almost de rigueur color screen.

Now if we could only sharpen this to be fit for battle. Kerplah!

Today's Photo Archives update is the first of several exclusives that were available at last weekend's debut of Revenge of the Sith toys. The Target exclusive Darth Vader (Lava Reflection) may be just a simple repaint of an older figure, but with the frenzy felt from Midnight Madness, fans flocked to their local stores to get their hands on this collectors edition. Even if he does remind me of Azrael, this just goes to show that Star Wars fans love Vader!

DIY CD Lamp

DIY CD Lamp 06/06/2005 12:09 AM

cd_lamp_top_sm.jpgA man who thought that sunlight looks beautiful as it refracts through the side of a CD-ROM shouldn't be trusted with power tools, but I guess they're more lax about that up in Canada. Jim Watters, a former QA tester, had about 70 CDs and decided to make a lamp in order to recreate that warm, plastic glow. The resulting DIY project is a wonderful fire hazard made of a tube light and some plywood. (Thanks, Luke)

Gravity Lamp

Gravity Lamp 09/22/2004 08:39 AM

gravity_lamp.jpg imageThis "Gravity" lamp from one of our favorite design houses Front is a concept design that detects when you enter and exit a room, perking up straight and shining brightly upon your arrival, and slowly drooping down to slumber when after you leave. This is appealing not only because it gives the lamp a sense of personality - albeit a sycophantic one centered around its need for its master's approval - but because it takes us one step closer to the real future we all crave, where each night we retire to our own personal version of Pee Wee's Playhouse.

Pop open the tube, flip out clip and roll-out shade, and unfurl the cord. The lamp base will still have the stamps and your address on it, but that's even better. It's on sale for about 23 bucks.

TubeLamp6DSharpNoLogo.jpg imageI'm sort of in love with this Tube Lamp by Nik Willmore, which is a really dangerous thing since he lives and works right here in New York. At $225, though, it's almost cheap enough to just get and justify as a heirloom or something. Here's your inheritance, kids, and it glows!

Oh, and if you are worried about getting one just because the bulbs might burn out, apparently the 25-watt tubular bulbs can be gotten almost anywhere, even Home Depot. And of course, you can't forget the finishing touch - the control knob is a chromed replacement for a Fender Telecaster.

Oskar Table Lamp

Oskar Table Lamp 02/05/2005 10:17 PM

oskarlamp.jpg imageHopefully carved from the finest anodized aluminum by nude Pagan witches or something, the Oskar Table Lamp delivers in areas other $465 dollar lamps fall hopelessly short. Groundbreaking features include its ability to "fit in compact spaces", and also provide "multi-directional lighting for tasking". It gets better:

Able to stand alone or function as a bookend, the best-selling design stays fixed while multidirectional lighting is provided with a flexible metal arm and fully rotating aluminum reflector.
While many other lamps (or bookends) may also provide an "integrated toggle switch for turning the lamp on and off," we challenge you to find one that has been blessed in ancient Triskelion Rite Of Tea rituals to ensure the unrelenting favor of the Sun. In fact, it's probably not this one, either.

Bulb not included.

Ventana Scroll Lamp

Ventana Scroll Lamp 08/16/2004 08:06 AM

ventana_lamp.jpg imageSomebody needs to steal the concept of the Ventana scroll lamp and manufacturer a cut-rate version for less than the $700 the original goes for, because I would like to place dozens of them in my apartment for various uses, such as lighting up things, looking at, and swinging them out 180° on their mounts and saying "huh," and "would you look at that?" As it stands, though, a couple of halogen bulbs and a roll of space toilet paper isn't going to pry the better part of a grand out of my pocket.

The Ventana isn't the only lamp Pablo Designs has, either, and I found many of them to be pretty nifty.

eWeek: Sun to promote LAMP

eWeek: Sun to promote LAMP 08/16/2002 05:51 AM
Schwartz said that at the edge of the Web, Sun will promote a LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) solution to developers. LAMP, a generic open-source solution, is Sun's Linux-based solution available on its newly released LX50 Intel-based machines running Linux or Solaris. Schwartz referred to Sun's version as Sun LAMP. Apache is an open-source Web server, MySQL is an open-source database and PHP is an open-source language for creating middle-tier HTML applications.

"Our competition is Windows, but it will increasingly suffer from the economic model Linux will promote," Schwartz said.

While Sun will continue to drive large deployments to the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) infrastructure, the company will promote LAMP for less complex applications.

Microsoft Looks to Extinguish LAMP

Microsoft Looks to Extinguish LAMP 06/17/2005 03:18 PM
Microsoft engineers have toiled for years to make the company's software industrial strength and worthy of large corporations' dollars.

Now the software giant faces a different challenge: fending off open-source alternatives that are good enough for most jobs. At Microsoft's TechEd customer conference last week, executives spelled out the company's lineup to combat these cut-rate incursions onto its turf.

In particular, the company is focused on improving its alternatives to the so-called LAMP stack, the combination of the Linux operating system, Apache Web server, MySQL database, and scripting languages PHP, Perl or Python. Microsoft's anti-LAMP strategy is to heap features into its low-end products and to build a comprehensive set of tools--spanning development to management--in the hopes of making Windows Server more attractive.

LAMP made easy with XAMPP

LAMP made easy with XAMPP 06/24/2005 06:58 PM
The LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl) software stack is emerging as a popular and cost-effective Web development platform. This is understandable given that it comprises a free operating system, Web server, database, and scripting language. However, a problem with having a number of separate open source components is integration. The XAMPP project aims to eliminate this problem. With XAMPP, there is no reason for developers to skip over an open source solution when considering Web development platforms.
