Oddly Shaped Televisions 06/24/2005 04:00 PM

7702Hannspree.jpgThe sky is the limit when it comes to televisions. Thanks to shows like Pimp My Ride, the adolescent understands that televisions of any size and shape can be placed anywhere. Hannspree has decided to take the idea and run with it by manufacturing LCD televisions into various shapes and locations. Over 100 different designs are available right now with prices starting at $450.

Oddly flavored condoms in Shanghai

Oddly flavored condoms in Shanghai 03/24/2005 02:22 PM
Xeni Jardin: BB Reader Dan Washburn in Shanghai says:
While Bliss paid our bills recently during a trip to a typically unfriendly neighborhood KEDI market — many bills get paid at 24-hour shops here in Shanghai — I perused the condom display rack, always good for a laugh. Always, indeed. Flavored condoms. Ice Cream. Green Tea. And, my personal favorite, Ordinary.

I find the concept of flavored condoms humorous to begin with, but I’ve also never had to taste a condom. So I guess they serve their purpose. A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, right? (Or, in this case, it actually prevents it from going down.) Ice cream? OK, I guess I can undertand this one. But there are many flavors of ice cream out there. Let’s hope it’s not Mississippi Mud Pie or Moose Tracks or Brownie Batter or anything that ends in “nut crunch.” Something like Karamel Sutra seems appropriate. But, hell, it’s probably Green Tea Ice Cream.

Microsoft's PlaysForSure Logo Program
Attracts New Industry Partners and
Expands to Connected Televisions, New
Portable Devices
01/06/2005 12:17 AM
Today at 2005 International CES, Microsoft Corp. announced broad, additional support for the PlaysForSure™ logo program - both for devices and upcoming services. In addition to many portable music players that are PlaysForSure-verified, there are now new televisions and DVD players designed for PlaysForSure compatibility that feature built-in connections to wireless or wired home networks for the easy playback of photos, as well as subscription-based music and video via a Windows® XP-based PC. At CES 2005, D-Link Systems Inc. and Digitrex debuted connected high-definition (HD) TVs, HD displays and DVD players designed to be part of the PlaysForSure logo program, and Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. demonstrated a concept plasma display. In addition, a range of new color-screen, mini-hard-drive portable devices supporting both music and photos are designed to be PlaysForSure-verified, including the Gateway MP3 Photo Jukebox, iriver H10 and the Samsung YH-925 and YH-820. First announced at Microsoft's Digital Entertainment Anywhere launch event in October, the PlaysForSure logo is designed to help consumers with Windows XP-based PCs choose devices and online music and video stores that work together, taking the guesswork out of compatibility.

Car Shaped DVD Player

Car Shaped DVD Player 03/24/2005 04:51 AM

dvd_car.jpg imageThis Sports Car DVD Player made me guffaw for a couple seconds, then I realized something dreadful: it costs 250 pounds, or "too many" American dollars. Sure, it has a 5" LCD, plays DVDs and MP3 files, and even has a front bumper as a DVD tray. I even recall seeing something along these lines at The Sharper Image or an equally gimmicky establishment, but I don't remember if it actually had a screen or not. Also, this player is "so cool it's almost frozen!" Now I have to buy one.

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/images/sanyo_battery.jpg" alt="sanyo_battery.jpg image" width="200" height="138" class="border right"/>Sanyo has announced a new shape of battery called "pin" style. Ladybug Shaped MP3 Player

Ladybug Shaped MP3 Player 04/08/2005 10:39 AM

ladybug_mp3.jpg imageAdd "ladybug" to that list of bizarre MP3 player shapes. Evergreen Corporation releases 128MB and 256MB models of the player, which are polished to look like a real ladybug. The spots aren't just for show, either — those are the buttons you use to control play, pause and so forth. They're somewhat crappy as far as MP3 players go, with support limited to 256kbps playback and USB 1.1 transfer, but that's not a huge deal given the 256MB limit of space. They will play music for about 5 hours after recharge by USB.

Undecagon-Shaped Abit PC

Undecagon-Shaped Abit PC 04/15/2005 09:59 AM

abit_undecagon.jpgIf you've longed to own a computer case that looks just like a module from the International Space Station, look no further. The 3XS ACON Isotope PC, made by Abit, provides you with a 3.2GHz P4, ATI X700 Pro, and 1GB of RAM. I think it'd be something of a personal struggle against the temptation to roll it back and forth across my desk, eventually rendering it a tangle of wires and PCB, but for $1,500, it's the first undecagon-shaped case I've seen. And so, you see, you get a piece of trivia along with a decent system from Abit.

300 private islands shaped like world

300 private islands shaped like world
map, near Dubai
04/04/2005 06:24 AM
Cory Doctorow: A developer near Dubai is building a supervillain lair straight out of the funnybooks -- a collection of private islands arranged to look like a map of the world, with African game preserves, luxury hotels, McMansions, condos, etc etc etc. Also, a fleet of (heavily armed?) water-borne private coppers patrolling the islands for crooks, and, I'm guessing, hidden missile silos, or possibly a labroatory for breeding a race of superbeings.
The World will consist of between 250 to 300 smaller private artifical islands divided into four categories - private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands. Each island will range from 250,000 to 900,000 square feet in size, with 50 to 100 metres of water between each island. The development is to cover an area of 9 kilometers in length and 6 kilometers in width, surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater. The only means of transportation between the islands will be by marine transport.
Link (Thanks, Jake!)

Update: Pablo sez, "here is the official page. At that website you may download a PDF file of every island (country). E.g., United Kingdom."
