Hydro-Foam: Flying R/C Boat

Hydro-Foam: Flying R/C Boat

Hydro-Foam: Flying R/C Boat 06/24/2005 04:00 PM

hydro-foam.jpgAlthough the inventor seems a little stressed out ("Please do not email me") he's made a pretty fantastic thing, so we're going to cut him some slack. The 'Hydro-Foam' R/C vehicles are currently prototypes, powered by a brushless motor and lithium-polymer batteries. What makes them so special is their ability to travel not only on the water, but through the air, and on the ground at serious speeds. And this isn't a 'park it and swap some parts thing.' The videos show the Hydro-Foams moving from water to air to ground and back again with just a flick of the flaps.

They definitely look easy to destroy—creator Michael Connally's website makes it clear that this is "not a beginner airplane"—but they will be available for purchase sometime in the future (sooner if you'd just leave Connally in peace). (Thanks, Spinelli!)

Non-Lethal Slippery Foam, an
Anti-Traction Material for the ages

Non-Lethal Slippery Foam, an
Anti-Traction Material for the ages
07/28/2004 05:48 AM
The Mobility Denial System is an oil-slick-in-a-can, a combination of "Drilling Mud Additive, Flocculent and water" that renders surfaces as slippery as wet ice. Lots of tasty acronyms and buzzwords on the sell page, including "Anti-Traction Material (ATM)" and "Non-Lethal Slippery Foam."
Once applied, the material will degrade or impair the adversary's ability to move. For Interior applications it can be applied to flat, smooth, non-porous surfaces such as linoleum, tile, wood floors or staircases. Exterior applications include sloped, rough, porous surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, and grassy areas.

Bob wants to put WiFi in the Sky. “So here’s my plan for really cheap aerial Internet service. I’m preparing a number of experiments using a Linksys WRT54GS 802.11g router mounted on the roof of my house in Charleston, SC. The router is running Sveasoft firmware that gives me direct control of transmitter power if needed. I’ll be testing it with a variety of antennas, mainly omnidirectional but perhaps I’ll try a sector antenna, too. The other end of the wireless connection will be a second WRT54GS mounted in my funky homebuilt airplane. Operating the pair of routers as an Ethernet-to-Ethernet bridge will give me much higher performance than I could ever expect from just using a WiFi card in my notebook computer. And I’ll be testing a variety of antennas on the belly of my funky airplane, too.”

Where's My Flying Car?

Where's My Flying Car? 11/17/2003 07:51 PM
It's been decades since people have suggested that everyone would have a flying car or a personal jetpack. There are any number of "flying" technologies that futurists expected to be commonplace by the new millennium, and here we are a few years in and we're still pretty firmly grounded. MSNBC is looking at seven "promised" flying technologies that still haven't come home - from flying cars to personal jetpacks to regular supersonic commercial air travel (bye bye Concorde) to space tourism. Some of these may come true eventually, but they've all been talked about for years, and we don't seem that much closer.

It's Official - the future sucks. Why has the future been such a let down? It's more 1984 than Barbarella. If we can have ID cards and video surveillance, then why can't we have intergalactic flying cars and hot chicks in skimpy plastic outfits? Clearly I'm not the only one wondering where all the cool stuff went - check out RetroFuture

Is the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign against John Kerry finally sinking? While President Bush still declines to condemn the group's widely discredited, corrosive claims about Kerry's war record, New York Times columnist Bob Herbert is trying to make some sense of a melee so tilted that it appears to be utterly disconnected from the real military history of the respective Bush and Kerry camps.

More Flying Robots 04/08/2005 08:06 PM
There have been several flying robots in the news lately. A Marine Corps News story describes their Wasp Micro Air Vehicle (MAV), a hand-launched robot plane with Kevlar wings and side-looking cameras. Another MAV being designed by Honeywell for DARPA is described in a News.com article. And, last, is an autonomous helicopter being developed at New Mexico State University's Rio-Robo Lab, described in an Albuquerque Tribune article and an earlier NMSU press release.
