Yahoo Shuts Chat Rooms Amid Child sex

Yahoo Shuts Chat Rooms Amid Child sex
Concerns
06/24/2005 08:27 PM
Yahoo Inc., the most-used Internet site, has shut down all its user-created Internet chat rooms amid concerns that adults were using the sites to try to have sex with minors. The giant Internet media company closed down those chat rooms and the ability to create new ones "in the past week," said Yahoo spokeswoman Mary Osako.

Chat rooms created and sponsored by Yahoo itself remain open, Osako said. The number of user-created chat rooms is variable at any given time and Yahoo does not track that figure, she said. The user-created chat rooms in question, where Internet users converse in real time, had names including "Girls 13 And Under For Older Guys" and "Girls 13 And Up For Much Older Men" and were all listed under "education chat rooms," Houston television station KPRC reported.

Can AOL Be Forced To Put Safe Sex
Notices In Chat Rooms?

Can AOL Be Forced To Put Safe Sex
Notices In Chat Rooms?
01/22/2004 08:57 AM
An interesting battle is brewing between some health officials and AOL. The health officials are worried that people using chat rooms to set up real-life sexual encounters aren't doing anything to protect themselves during sex, and its leading to an increase in sexually transmitted diseases. Thus, they're trying to sue AOL to force them to put up safe-sex messages on those chat rooms. From a general community standpoint, that seems to make sense, but AOL has pretty good reasons for not doing it. As they point out, they're just setting up an open chat room system that anyone can use to chat about anything. They don't have the capability to determine which chat rooms are being used for these purposes, and they point out that users may get upset if they feel they're being spied on in some way. At the same time, there's simply no legal basis under which AOL should be compelled to post such a warning. Of course, taking a step back from all that, would anyone actually pay attention to such a warning?

New Hampshire To Tax Instant Messaging,
Email And Chat Rooms
07/12/2004 12:14 PM
Brian writes in to point out that "New Hampshire's tax collecting agency w ants to apply a 7 percent tax on a variety of telephone and Internet services from chat rooms to voice mail." They also include web mail and instant messaging in the things that would be taxed. This is even more ridiculous than Florida's plans to tax your WiFi network. The New Hampshire "Department of Revenue Administration" tries to lamely justify this new tax, saying they're just updating old rules for new technologies, but can't seem to come up with a good justification for doing this... perhaps because there is no good justification for doing this.

Study Quantifies Dangers Of Online Chat
Rooms (Sort Of)

Study Quantifies Dangers Of Online Chat
Rooms (Sort Of)
06/01/2004 03:37 PM
Over in the UK, they seem positively obsessed with the dangers of internet chat rooms. We don't deny that there are dangers, but they seem to be blown way out of proportion. A little bit of education from parents and schools could solve an awful lot of the problems associated with chat rooms (and, in fact, that probably does solve many of the risks already for most families). Still, it seems you can't go a day without finding a sensationalistic story about the chatrooms, and now they're pushing a new study that claims to clearly demonstrate the dangers of chatrooms - but it all depends on your interpretation. They claim 7% of kids claim they've met in person with someone they first met online without telling their parents. First off, that's 7%. That means 93% haven't, which seems like a pretty good number. The article doesn't give many more details that will let you know much about those numbers either. What age is covered by "young people?" While it might be a bit scary if your 8-year-old is running off to the park to meet someone he or she doesn't know, there are plenty of teenagers savvy enough to be careful about what they're getting involved with. The other statistic is just as bad: 11% "felt uncomfortable" during an online chat. Again, they don't define the age range and they don't delve into exactly what made them uncomfortable. "Felt uncomfortable" is quite broad. I'm sure if I went into chat rooms with strangers I'd feel uncomfortable at times as well, but it wouldn't mean I'm in "danger."

How Does Blocking A Phone Number Protect
Children In Chat Rooms?

How Does Blocking A Phone Number Protect
Children In Chat Rooms?
06/01/2004 12:01 PM
A British mother has apparently won the "top award" at "the world's largest invention trade show" for her invention to help protect her daughter in online chat rooms. That sounds great, but it's not at all clear how the device she describes does anything to protect children in chat rooms. Perhaps it's the BBC reporting, but it appears the device can be used to prevent a phone from dialing a specific phone number. That's it. What that has to do with stopping a child from using an internet chat room is beyond me. The one (fairly small) benefit I can come up with is the ability to keep a fairly unsophisticated child from dialing up while a parent isn't around to watch them. After all, if the parents aren't home already, can't the kids just unplug the device? Besides once they got online they could just go to any chatroom they wanted. Besides, why use a device when you could just do it in software on the computer itself? Finally, with much of the world rushing rapidly towards broadband, this sort of device becomes even less useful. While the BBC article suggests the woman may make a "fortune" on the device, it's not entirely clear why. It seems this is just another attempt to jump on the fears of parents about what their kids might be doing online, without being at all useful.

Via, er someone, I seem to have lost the backlink, 99ROOMS.COM; I was trying to work but just a little too wasted with East-Coast jet-lag and this thing cost me an hour of my time, which I don’t regret in the slightest. I’m sure others will disagree, but I found it beautiful and witty.
