Summer movies 2005
06/05/2005 11:47 PMReader peter vanDerbeek has gone above and beyond the call of
duty, producing a 2005
summer movie calendar (in iCal format) from the entire NY Times listing with details about each film, and
links to the full NY Times review and movie trailer on apple.com (if
available). If you're a movie fan and have calendaring software that
supports the iCal format, this is a great resource. If your calendar
can't import iCal files, you can still view this calendar on the web in HTML format. Thanks, peter!

Summer 2005 Vaio Notebooks
04/12/2005 11:31 AM
Apart from the new Vaio type H desktop we just told
you about, Sony announced new Vaio type A, S, and F notebooks. The
type A series now includes FeliCa contactless IC support, and adds a
model with a 15.4" screen to the lineup. Vaio type S is renewed with
better specifications such as a Pentium M 750, 512MB of RAM, an 80GB
hard drive, and GeForce Go 6200. Finally, the type Fs contain a range
of specification improvements across all models, but of note would be
the new "TV Port Replicator," an optional MPEG-2 hardware encoder
board available for about 30,000 yen. Sadly, it seems Sony has omitted
FeliCa support in the type S and F notebooks.

Flu Season! Wabbit Season!
Flu Season! Wabbit Season!
12/02/2003 01:03 AMEverybody in southern California seems to be falling ill, so I'm sure
it won't be too long before I'm KO'ed as well. Perhaps if I keep
enough green "liquid death" (read: NyQuil) coursing through my veins,
the bugs will remain at bay? Taste is the first thing to go when I get
sick - which would explain my sense of humor as of late. I've moved my
home office mini-television into the bedroom in preparation for the
inevitable. Even if I don't become the next witless victim, I'll be
able to fall asleep to Drew Carey reruns and wake up to Battlestar
Girlactica promos. With red hot Wi-Fi, I'm also able to stay connected
while under the covers. Adventure Elf, here I come!...

right. People that buy or sell on the
long tail shouldn't be
considered consumers. To prove a point, the
long tail members I describe aren't passive,
rather, they are in the driver's seat of the new distribution.
States and their passive consumers (of political goods) are the
ones at risk.

Voice Over Wi-Fi a Niche App
Voice Over Wi-Fi a Niche App
11/11/2003 03:11 PMA There is a lot of talk and some confusion around the value of voice
over Wi-Fi: It will take some time for the market to figure out how
extensively it should be used. I think voice over Wi-Fi can be really
useful to certain workers, but the current products have so many
shortcomings that a company must have enough of those workers and be
able to benefit enough to suffer through the headaches. Voice over
Wi-Fi will become a routine service only if the products improve
significantly....

Niche Publishing - Engadget
Niche Publishing - Engadget
03/06/2004 01:59 AMNiche publishing really isn't just for Nick Denton anymore... Peter Rojas,
the original blogger behind Gizmodo has broken out of that gig to
start Engadget... a competitor
to Gizmodo.
Denton still has a leg up (first mover advantage we used to call
it) on individuals launching one or two focused sites on their own, as
he can aggregate his entire Gawker media property audiences if he
wants to for an advertiser, or he can sell the advertising
piecemeal... but, folks like Rojas can probably make enough money off
their sites short-term to support themselves, and long term to build a
living that they enjoy.
Best of luck Peter...

Social reading -- A niche to be filled?
Social reading -- A niche to be filled?
09/11/2004 08:54 AMThere's a niche in the blogging/media ecosystem I hope someone fills.
Aggregators are wonderful, but I find using them makes me as lonely as
a night watchman making his rounds. So, between the solipsism of
aggregators and the impersonalism of mainstream newspapers, I'd like a
site where my friends and I can read stuff together. We suggest blogs
and sites, and the aggregator surfaces the hot posts based on clever
metrics and heuristics (mumble mumble handwaving). And we get to
comment and annotate for one another. That last point is important
because I find that I often don't leave comments...

Rescuing XSLT from Niche Status
Rescuing XSLT from Niche Status
10/30/2002 12:50 AMXSLT is one of the most exciting technologies to come out of the
XML family. Unfortunately, its incredible power and associated
complexity can be overwhelming to new users preventing many from
experimenting with it or causing them to quickly give up in disgust.
In fact, unless the method of teaching and the common style of use for
XSLT is radically changed to make it more accessible, XSLT will be
relegated to niche status like SGML and other powerful
technologies. -- David Jacobs
