System
06/24/2005 03:04 PM

Codewalkers.com has a new item posted today with information on a PHP Layers Menu System project over on SourceForge.

Are you looking to make a cool looking navigation menu? Need to make a tree menu? The PHP Layers Menu System has you covered. This excellent library will help you create DHTML menus very quickly. I've just used it to create the new navigational system you see here on Codewalkers.

From the look of it you can make simple, cross-browser drop-down menus with PHP driving the hierarchical structure and dynamically building the information on the fly...

Carl Franklin and I had dinner last night and he had a brain storm about making a tool that lets him build user interfaces in layers. He wanted to know who to talk to on the Visual Studio team to see if they are interested. I said "put it on your blog cause more Visual Studio program managers are likely to see it that way than if I went over to building 42 and went door-to-door. He took me up on that and here's his idea.

Database Abstraction Layers Must Die! 07/08/2004 12:13 PM
Beware of men preaching of false hope. Take, for example, the way some folks feel like they need a database abstraction layer in their applications. Rasmus has long argued against them, and I've agreed with his reasoning and conclusion. (Because it's correct!) I was reminded of this when I recently read "rant, by request...", in which the author argues against the Smarty PHP template system. Why? Because PHP is itself a templating system. Adding another layer increases complexity, degrades performance,...

DHTML Goodness

DHTML Goodness 10/28/2003 11:08 PM

I've been working on implementing incremental repainting in Safari. With the exception of some hacks that I threw in for overflow:hidden elements, Safari 1.0 will repaint the entire visible area of a Web page whenever any object changes size. (Turn on paint flashing using Quartz debug and you'll see what I mean.)
This is obviously a big problem for DHTML sites.

Anyway, I've fixed this problem in my own build (which makes DHTML easily 5-10 times faster for affected pages), and now I'm looking for tests. What I'm looking for are any pages/tests you've got that do really cool dynamic stuff with DHTML and CSS. I want to know about pages that mostly work in Safari now. The point of this exercise is not to hear about current DHTML bugs, but to make sure I haven't regressed any behavior, so please stay on topic.

Post links to cool demos that do anything from dynamically changing clip to sliding elements around on screen to animating using all sorts of different techniques (changing margins, position, overflow, background, etc.).
